    Markovian kinetic equations in a nonequilibrium statistical ensemble formalism

    The nonlinear quantum kinetic theory for many-body systems either near or far from equilibrium that a nonequilibrium ensemble formalism provides is revisited. In this communication we consider an important limit of such transport equations, consisting of the memoryless approximation, which leads to the so-called Markovian kinetic equations. They are derived in Zubarev's approach to the method, and next applied to a particular model of a spin system in interaction with a thermal bath of lattice vibrations. The limitations of the approach, as well as some criticism it has received, are discussed.573B3637364

    Higher-order hydrodynamics: Extended Fick's Law, evolution equation, and Bobylev's instability

    A higher-order hydrodynamics for material motion in fluids, under arbitrary nonequilibrium conditions, is constructed. We obtain what is a generalized-to that conditions-Fick-type Law. It includes a representation of Burnett-type contributions of all order, in the form of a continuous-fraction expansion. Also, the equation includes generalized thermodynamic forces. which are characterized and discussed. All kinetic coefficients are given as correlations of microscopic mechanical quantities averaged over the nonequilibrium ensemble, and then are time- and space-dependent as a consequence of accounting for the dissipative processes that are unfolding in the medium. An extended evolution equation for the density of particles is derived, and the conditions when it goes over restricted forms of the type of the telegraphist equation and Fick's diffusion equation are presented.     Group B Streptococcus GAPDH Is Released upon Cell Lysis, Associates with Bacterial Surface, and Induces Apoptosis in Murine Macrophages

    Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenases (GAPDH) are cytoplasmic glycolytic enzymes that, despite lacking identifiable secretion signals, have been detected at the surface of several prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms where they exhibit non-glycolytic functions including adhesion to host components. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a human commensal bacterium that has the capacity to cause life-threatening meningitis and septicemia in newborns. Electron microscopy and fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis demonstrated the surface localization of GAPDH in GBS. By addressing the question of GAPDH export to the cell surface of GBS strain NEM316 and isogenic mutant derivatives of our collection, we found that impaired GAPDH presence in the surface and supernatant of GBS was associated with a lower level of bacterial lysis. We also found that following GBS lysis, GAPDH can associate to the surface of many living bacteria. Finally, we provide evidence for a novel function of the secreted GAPDH as an inducer of apoptosis of murine macrophages

    Design of bio-nanosystems for oral delivery of functional compounds

    Nanotechnology has been referred to as one of the most interesting topics in food technology due to the potentialities of its use by food industry. This calls for studying the behavior of nanosystems as carriers of biological and functional compounds aiming at their utilization for delivery, controlled release and protection of such compounds during food processing and oral ingestion. This review highlights the principles of design and production of bio-nanosystems for oral delivery and their behavior within the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract, while providing an insight into the application of reverse engineering approach to the design of those bio-nanosystems. Nanocapsules, nanohydrogels, lipid-based and multilayer nanosystems are discussed (in terms of their main ingredients, production techniques, predominant forces and properties) and some examples of possible food applications are given. Phenomena occurring in in vitro digestion models are presented, mainly using examples related to the utilization of lipid-based nanosystems and their physicochemical behavior throughout the GI tract. Furthermore, it is shown how a reverse engineering approach, through two main steps, can be used to design bio-nanosystems for food applications, and finally a last section is presented to discuss future trends and consumer perception on food nanotechnology.Miguel A.
