In the past twenty years co-operatives have become important players in modern organic food supply chains, providing small-scale farmers with access to knowledge and markets, alongside opportunities to scale up their production. This teaching case is developed from qualitative interviews with current and former members and employees from the South Devon Organic Producers (SDOP) Co-operative, an award-winning organic vegetable grower co-operative based in South Devon (UK). The case is supplemented with interviews with key managerial personnel at the SDOP’s main stakeholder Riverford Organic Farms Limited.     Controlled interfacial assembly of 2D curved colloidal crystals and jammed shells

    Assembly of colloidal particles on fluid interfaces is a promising technique for synthesizing two-dimensional micro-crystalline materials useful in fields as diverse as biomedicine1, materials science2, mineral flotation3 and food processing4. Current approaches rely on bulk emulsification methods, require further chemical and thermal treatments, and are restrictive with respect to the materials employed5-9. The development of methods that exploit the great potential of interfacial assembly for producing tailored materials have been hampered by the lack of understanding of the assembly process. Here we report a microfluidic method that allows direct visualization and understanding of the dynamics of colloidal crystal growth on curved interfaces. The crystals are periodically ejected to form stable jammed shells, which we refer to as colloidal armour. We propose that the energetic barriers to interfacial crystal growth and organization can be overcome by targeted delivery of colloidal particles through hydrodynamic flows.     Exploring multiple drivers of cooperative governance: a paired case comparison of vegetable growing cooperatives in the UK and China

Adopting a qualitative case study method, the paper compares the development and governance attributes of two cooperatives and seeks to identify how non-economic conditions explain their differences. The cases are selected from the United Kingdom and China, representing different cultural and legislation contexts, to explore the role of culture and legislation in formulating the governance of farmer cooperatives. The results demonstrate that: (1) the formation of member groups due to considerable member heterogeneity may lead to the skewed allocation of control rights and income rights; (2) legislation play an important role in formulating the governance of cooperatives; and (3) national culture potentially has influence on cooperative governance, but direct evidence is in insufficient.National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social ScienceBritish Academ

    Drospirenone increases endothelial nitric oxide synthesis via a combined action on progesterone and mineralocorticoid receptors

    BACKGROUND: Progestins have actions on the cardiovascular system, which depend on the structure as well as on receptor binding characteristics. Drospirenone (DRSP) is a progestin that uniquely interferes with the signaling of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). Hormone therapy containing DRSP results in blood pressure reduction in hypertensive post-menopausal women. METHODS: We describe the effects of DRSP on endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthesis and compare them with those of progesterone (P) and of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). In addition, we herein tested the relevance of the anti-mineralocorticoid activity of DRSP for NO synthesis. RESULTS: DRSP results in rapid activation of the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) through mitogen-activated protein kinases and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase as well as in enhanced eNOS expression. These actions depend on P receptor. When the cells are exposed to aldosterone, a reduction of eNOS expression is found that is antagonized by DRSP. This action is not shared by P or MPA. In addition, DRSP does not interfere with the induction or activation of eNOS induced by estradiol, as opposed to MPA. CONCLUSIONS: DRSP acts on endothelial cells via a combined action through the P and MRs. These results help to interpret the anti-hypertensive effects of hormonal therapies containing DRSP

Although the number of methods to analyze these "omics" data has also increased, computational complexity and lack of documentation hinder researchers from analyzing their high-throughput data to its true potential. In this chapter we detail our data-driven, transkingdom network (TransNet) analysis protocol to integrate and interrogate multi-omics data. This systems biology approach has allowed us to successfully identify important causal relationships between different taxonomic kingdoms (e.g. mammals and microbes) using diverse types of data

    Carrier-mediated magnetoelectricity in complex oxide heterostructures

    While tremendous success has been achieved to date in creating both single phase and composite magnetoelectric materials, the quintessential electric-field control of magnetism remains elusive. In this work, we demonstrate a linear magnetoelectric effect which arises from a novel carrier-mediated mechanism, and is a universal feature of the interface between a dielectric and a spin-polarized metal. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we illustrate this effect at the SrRuO3_3/SrTiO3_3 interface and describe its origin. To formally quantify the magnetic response of such an interface to an applied electric field, we introduce and define the concept of spin capacitance. In addition to its magnetoelectric and spin capacitive behavior, the interface displays a spatial coexistence of magnetism and dielectric polarization suggesting a route to a new type of interfacial multiferroic

    We present further no-go theorems for classical de Sitter vacua in Type II string theory, i.e., de Sitter constructions that do not invoke non-perturbative effects or explicit supersymmetry breaking localized sources. By analyzing the stability of the 4D potential arising from compactification on manfiolds with curvature, fluxes, and orientifold planes, we found that additional ingredients, beyond the minimal ones presented so far, are necessary to avoid the presence of unstable modes.     A discriminative method for protein remote homology detection and fold recognition combining Top-n-grams and latent semantic analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Protein remote homology detection and fold recognition are central problems in bioinformatics. Currently, discriminative methods based on support vector machine (SVM) are the most effective and accurate methods for solving these problems. A key step to improve the performance of the SVM-based methods is to find a suitable representation of protein sequences.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this paper, a novel building block of proteins called Top-<it>n</it>-grams is presented, which contains the evolutionary information extracted from the protein sequence frequency profiles. The protein sequence frequency profiles are calculated from the multiple sequence alignments outputted by PSI-BLAST and converted into Top-<it>n</it>-grams. The protein sequences are transformed into fixed-dimension feature vectors by the occurrence times of each Top-<it>n</it>-gram. The training vectors are evaluated by SVM to train classifiers which are then used to classify the test protein sequences. We demonstrate that the prediction performance of remote homology detection and fold recognition can be improved by combining Top-<it>n</it>-grams and latent semantic analysis (LSA), which is an efficient feature extraction technique from natural language processing. When tested on superfamily and fold benchmarks, the method combining Top-<it>n</it>-grams and LSA gives significantly better results compared to related methods.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The method based on Top-<it>n</it>-grams significantly outperforms the methods based on many other building blocks including N-grams, patterns, motifs and binary profiles. Therefore, Top-<it>n</it>-gram is a good building block of the protein sequences and can be widely used in many tasks of the computational biology, such as the sequence alignment, the prediction of domain boundary, the designation of knowledge-based potentials and the prediction of protein binding sites.</p
