A generalized approach to model the spectra and radiation dose rate of solar particle events on the surface of Mars
For future human missions to Mars, it is important to study the surface
radiation environment during extreme and elevated conditions. In the long term,
it is mainly Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) modulated by solar activity that
contributes to the radiation on the surface of Mars, but intense solar
energetic particle (SEP) events may induce acute health effects. Such events
may enhance the radiation level significantly and should be detected as
immediately as possible to prevent severe damage to humans and equipment.
However, the energetic particle environment on the Martian surface is
significantly different from that in deep space due to the influence of the
Martian atmosphere. Depending on the intensity and shape of the original solar
particle spectra as well as particle types, the surface spectra may induce
entirely different radiation effects. In order to give immediate and accurate
alerts while avoiding unnecessary ones, it is important to model and well
understand the atmospheric effect on the incoming SEPs including both protons
and helium ions. In this paper, we have developed a generalized approach to
quickly model the surface response of any given incoming proton/helium ion
spectra and have applied it to a set of historical large solar events thus
providing insights into the possible variety of surface radiation environments
that may be induced during SEP events. Based on the statistical study of more
than 30 significant solar events, we have obtained an empirical model for
estimating the surface dose rate directly from the intensities of a power-law
SEP spectra
Excitations in time-dependent density-functional theory
An approximate solution to the time-dependent density functional theory
(TDDFT) response equations for finite systems is developed, yielding
corrections to the single-pole approximation. These explain why allowed
Kohn-Sham transition frequencies and oscillator strengths are usually good
approximations to the true values, and why sometimes they are not. The
approximation yields simple expressions for G\"orling-Levy perturbation theory
results, and a method for estimating expectation values of the unknown

Fully Ab initio Simulations of Tip Enhanced Raman Scattering Reveal Active Role of Substrate on High-Resolution Images
Tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) has emerged as a powerful tool to obtain subnanometer spatial resolution fingerprints of atomic motion. Theoretical calculations that can simulate the Raman scattering process and provide an unambiguous interpretation of TERS images often rely on crude approximations of the local electric field. In this work, we present a novel and fully ab initio method to compute TERS images by combining Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) and Density Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT) to calculate Raman cross sections with realistic local fields. We present TERS results on the benzene and the TCNE molecule, the latter adsorbed at Ag(110). We demonstrate that chemical effects on adsorbed molecules, often ignored in TERS simulations, dramatically change TERS images. This calls for the inclusion of chemical effects for predictive theory-experiment comparisons and understanding of molecular motion at the nanoscale
Agent Based Models of Language Competition: Macroscopic descriptions and Order-Disorder transitions
We investigate the dynamics of two agent based models of language
competition. In the first model, each individual can be in one of two possible
states, either using language or language , while the second model
incorporates a third state XY, representing individuals that use both languages
(bilinguals). We analyze the models on complex networks and two-dimensional
square lattices by analytical and numerical methods, and show that they exhibit
a transition from one-language dominance to language coexistence. We find that
the coexistence of languages is more difficult to maintain in the Bilinguals
model, where the presence of bilinguals in use facilitates the ultimate
dominance of one of the two languages. A stability analysis reveals that the
coexistence is more unlikely to happen in poorly-connected than in fully
connected networks, and that the dominance of only one language is enhanced as
the connectivity decreases. This dominance effect is even stronger in a
two-dimensional space, where domain coarsening tends to drive the system

The Diffusion of Humans and Cultures in the Course of the Spread of Farming
The most profound change in the relationship between humans and their
environment was the introduction of agriculture and pastoralism. [....] For an
understanding of the expansion process, it appears appropriate to apply a
diffusive model. Broadly, these numerical modeling approaches can be catego-
rized in correlative, continuous and discrete. Common to all approaches is the
comparison to collections of radiocarbon data that show the apparent wave of
advance of the transition to farming. However, these data sets differ in entry
density and data quality. Often they disregard local and regional specifics and
research gaps, or dating uncertainties. Thus, most of these data bases may only
be used on a very general, broad scale. One of the pitfalls of using
irregularly spaced or irregularly documented radiocarbon data becomes evident
from the map generated by Fort (this volume, Chapter 16): while the general
east-west and south-north trends become evident, some areas appear as having
undergone anomalously early transitions to farming. This may be due to faulty
entries into the data base or regional problems with radiocarbon dating, if not
