    Retinotopic Maps, Spatial Tuning, and Locations of Human Visual Areas in Surface Coordinates Characterized with Multifocal and Blocked fMRI Designs

    The localization of visual areas in the human cortex is typically based on mapping the retinotopic organization with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The most common approach is to encode the response phase for a slowly moving visual stimulus and to present the result on an individual's reconstructed cortical surface. The main aims of this study were to develop complementary general linear model (GLM)-based retinotopic mapping methods and to characterize the inter-individual variability of the visual area positions on the cortical surface. We studied 15 subjects with two methods: a 24-region multifocal checkerboard stimulus and a blocked presentation of object stimuli at different visual field locations. The retinotopic maps were based on weighted averaging of the GLM parameter estimates for the stimulus regions. In addition to localizing visual areas, both methods could be used to localize multiple retinotopic regions-of-interest. The two methods yielded consistent retinotopic maps in the visual areas V1, V2, V3, hV4, and V3AB. In the higher-level areas IPS0, VO1, LO1, LO2, TO1, and TO2, retinotopy could only be mapped with the blocked stimulus presentation. The gradual widening of spatial tuning and an increase in the responses to stimuli in the ipsilateral visual field along the hierarchy of visual areas likely reflected the increase in the average receptive field size. Finally, after registration to Freesurfer's surface-based atlas of the human cerebral cortex, we calculated the mean and variability of the visual area positions in the spherical surface-based coordinate system and generated probability maps of the visual areas on the average cortical surface. The inter-individual variability in the area locations decreased when the midpoints were calculated along the spherical cortical surface compared with volumetric coordinates. These results can facilitate both analysis of individual functional anatomy and comparisons of visual cortex topology across studies

To set the trophic fractionation means establishing three groups, the first (herbivores) consisting of (D. laevis, B. (Bosmina) and Ceriodaphnia pulchella cf. longirostris), the second (omnivore) which is (Daphnia pulex, Macrocyclops sp. and Cyclopoida), and a third group (secondary consumer) where is the only calanoido B. gracilis. In comparing the temporal variation is observed that there is a significant change in signals δ13C and δ15N of some species in relation to the influence of sources and allochthonous or autochthonous origin, spatial variation was not significant. It is concluded that the macrozooplanton Lake Tota, has a strong link with the autotrophic pathway and pelagic trophic levels have 3 sections, plus the primary producers and the food web in general tends to have an amplitude of trophic niche.En los ecosistemas acuáticos se presentan aportes de materia y energía, en mayor o menor proporción dependiendo de su cuenca, dado el origen y calidad de estos recursos, se puede alterar el balance en el metabolismo o las interacciones en la red trófica. Utilizando los isotopos estables de Carbono y Nitrógeno, se estableció el vínculo entre fuentes potenciales de recursos y el uso por las especies del macrozooplancton en los sectores Lago grande y Lago chico del lago de Tota (Boyacá). Así, se propusieron las posibles vías tróficas y el rol de cada especie en la red. En general, en la mayor parte de este estudio, las especies tuvieron un vínculo marcado con la vía autotrófica, siendo el fitoplancton el recurso alimenticio base para la red trófica, encontrando comúnmente señales empobrecidas de carbono. Particularmente, el análisis mostró una variación en la fuente o recurso para dos especies (Daphnia laevis y Bosmina (Bosmina) cf. longirostris), con un enriquecimiento en su señal de 19.92‰ δ13C a -20.34‰ δ13C, lo que se puede dar por una plasticidad en su fuente alimenticia, e incluso el caso de Boeckella gracilis que tiene una señal que indica una especialización en su recurso con valores empobrecidos de carbono -30 a -26‰ δ13C mientras que los valores de nitrógeno son enriquecidos con un valor promedio de 20.21‰ en δ15N.     The importance of excretion by Chironomus larvae on the internal loads of nitrogen and phosphorus in a small eutrophic urban reservoir

    Measurements of ammonium and phosphate excretion by the Chironomus larvae were conducted in order to evaluate the importance of these chironomids for the internal loads of a small eutrophic urban reservoir. Ammonium and phosphate excretion rates by Chironomus larvae of small size (6-10 mm total length) were significantly higher than those of the Chironomids having medium (9-11 mm) and large (11-16 mm) sizes. A dependence in relation to temperature was recorded for the ammonium and phosphate excretions that was significantly higher at 25 °C than at 20 and 15 °C. Through a linear relation between biomass (dry weight) and total length and, between excretion and biomass and, data on chironomids densities, after an intense sampling in 33 sites distributed all along the reservoir bottom, the mean phosphate and ammonium excretion rates corresponded to 2,014 ± 5,134 µg.m-2/day and 1,643 ± 3,974 µg.m-2/day, respectively. Considering the mean biomass (34 mg.m-2) of Chironomus, the lake area (88,156 m²) and the mean excretion rates, the contribution of benthic chironomids to the internal loads would be 181 KgP and 147 KgN. for the sampling months (October-November 1998). These values showed that the internal loads by excretion from Chironomus larvae correspond to approximately 33% of the external loads of phosphorus in the lake and, in the case of nitrogen, to only 5%

    Differences in cortical activation during smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements following cerebellar lesions

    Current evidence supports the proposal that the cerebellum mediates the activity of other brain areas involved in the control of eye movements. Most of the evidence so far has concentrated on the vermis and flocculi as the cerebellar agents of oculomotor control. But there is also evidence for an involvement of the cerebellar hemispheres in eye movement control. Straube et al. (Ann Neurol 42:891–898, 1997) showed that lateral hemispheric lesions affect initiation of smooth pursuit (SPEM) and saccadic eye movements. Ron and Robinson (J Neurophysiol 36:1004–1022, 1973) evoked smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements by electrical stimulation of crus I and II, as well as in the dentate nuclei of the monkey. Functional MRI studies also provide evidence that the cerebellar hemispheres play a significant role in SPEM and saccadic eye movements. To clarify the role of the cerebral hemispheres in eye movement control we compared the eye movement related blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) responses of 12 patients with cerebellar lesions due to stroke with those of an aged-matched healthy control group. Six patients showed oculomotor abnormalities such as dysmetric saccades or saccadic SPEM during the experiment. The paradigm consisted of alternating blocks of fixation, visually guided saccades and visually guided SPEM. A nonparametric random-effects group analysis showed a degraded pattern of activation in the patient group during the performance of SPEM and saccadic eye movements in posterior parietal areas putatively containing the parietal eye field
