A model to assess the technological level of small businesses
none2In this paper we present a three-dimensional framework (named Cu- be of Corporate Technological Level â CCTL) to evaluate the technological po- sition of small enterprises from different points of view. This framework has been developed from existing tools with similar goals, already proposed by oth- er authors. Compared to existing ones, this framework differs primarily for the inclusion of a collaborative perspective. It reflects the distinctive features of the latest interactive and web 2.0 tools (chat, blogs, forums, ...), that allow compa- nies to manage their relationships with the external stakeholders of the supply chain. The proposed framework has been applied to a sample of small business- es to test its validity. Enterprise 2.0: Research challenges and opportunities

Blending Web 2.0 technologies with enterprise information systems is setting up the stage for a new generation of information systems that will help enterprises open up new communication channels with their stakeholders. Contrary to traditional enterprises with top-down command flow and bottom-up feedback flow, the same flows in Enterprise 2.0 cross all levels and in all directions bringing people together in the development of creative and innovative ideas. The power of Web 2.0 technologies stems from their ability to capture real-world phenomena such as collaboration, competition, and partnership that can be converted into useful and structured information sources from which enterprises can draw information about marketsâ trends, consumersâ habits, suppliersâ strategies, etc. This paper discusses the research efforts that our international research group has put into the topic of Enterprise 2.0 (aka Social Enterprise). In particular, our research group advocates that existing practices for managing enterprise information systems need to be re-visited in a way that permits to capture social relations that arise inside and outside the enterprise, to establish guidelines and techniques to assist IT practitioners integrate social relations into their design, development, and maintenance efforts of these information systems, and last but not least to identify and tackle challenges that prevent capturing social relations
The Impact of Online Social Networks on Decision Support Systems
Previous research on this matter had already determined that many
concepts are encompassed by both online social networking and decision support
systems research. Due to the large number of concepts and using clustering
techniques, we were able to determine four concept clusters, namely: the
technical infrastructure, online communities, network analysis and knowledge
management. Then, we intended to gain further knowledge on how those
concepts influenced DSS related research and the contribution of each cluster to
the support of the phases of decision-making process. We also wanted to perceive
the interconnections among the concept clusters themselves, for which we used
structural equation modeling techniques.
The obtained results evidence that not only online social networks are being used
as a technical infrastructure to support the three decision making phases and to
support knowledge management and online communities, but also that the other
clusters only regard the intelligence phase of the decision process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The impacts of climate change on the winter water cycle of the western Himalaya
Some 180 million people depend on the Indus River as a key water resource, fed largely by precipitation falling over the western Himalaya. However, the projected response of western Himalayan precipitation to climate change is currently not well constrained: CMIP5 GCMs project a reduced frequency and vorticity of synoptic-scale systems impacting the area, but such systems would exist in a considerably moister atmosphere.
In this study, a convection-permitting (4 km horizontal resolution) setup of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is used to examine 40 cases of these synoptic-scale systems, known as western disturbances (WDs), as they interact with the western Himalaya. In addition to a present-day control run, three experiments are performed by perturbing the boundary and initial conditions to reflect pre-industrial, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 background climates respectively.
It is found that in spite of the weakening intensity of WDs, net precipitation associated with them in future climate scenarios increases significantly; conversely there is no net change in precipitation between the pre-industrial and control experiments despite a significant conversion of snowfall in the pre-industrial experiment to rainfall in the control experiment, consistent with the changes seen in historical observations.
This shift from snowfall to rainfall has profound consequences on water resource management in the Indus Valley, where irrigation is dependent on spring meltwater. Flux decomposition shows that the increase in future precipitation follows directly from the projected moistening of the tropical atmosphere (which increases the moisture flux incident on the western Himalaya by 28%) overpowering the weakened dynamics (which decreases it by 20%).
Changes to extreme rainfall events are also examined: it is found that such events may increase significantly in frequency in both future scenarios examined.
Two-hour maxima rainfall events that currently occur in 1-in-8 WDs are projected to increase tenfold in frequency in the RCP8.5 scenario; more prolonged (one-week maxima) events are projected to increase fiftyfold
Why there and then, not here and now? Ecological offsetting in California and England, and the sharpening contradictions of neoliberal natures
Failure has become an increasingly important theme of debate in the literature on neoliberal natures. In this article we take up this topic with respect to ecological offsetting, often regarded as an exemplar of market-oriented conservation. Comparing the case of species banking which emerged in California in the 1990s with frustrated efforts to implement a biodiversity offsetting programme in England beginning in 2010, we develop a novel analytical framework for explaining why this kind of environmental market-making may or may not be successful in different contexts. Drawing on work in geography on the neoliberalisation of nature and insights from economic sociology, we characterise ecological offsetting as âcommand-and-commodifyâ regulation: a peculiar form of hybrid ecological regulation which depends on an institutional mix of âauthoritativeâ and âeconomicâ power to function. In California, these kinds of environmental markets initially emerged at a moment of compromise, contingent on an embrace of âmarketâ solutions to environmental problems on the one hand, and a somewhat paradoxical expansion of authoritative power to ecologically regulate land development, on the other. In England, by contrast, deep fiscal austerity and deregulatory zeal, combined with resistance from nearly every quarter, initially undermined the possibility of balancing economic and authoritative power, which we argue is necessary for the construction of viable ecological offsetting. Reflecting on themes in the wider literature, we conclude by questioning whether the English experience is indicative of sharpening tensions between economy and ecology in the late neoliberal era
