Critical Scale-invariance in Healthy Human Heart Rate

We demonstrate the robust scale-invariance in the probability density function (PDF) of detrended healthy human heart rate increments, which is preserved not only in a quiescent condition, but also in a dynamic state where the mean level of heart rate is dramatically changing. This scale-independent and fractal structure is markedly different from the scale-dependent PDF evolution observed in a turbulent-like, cascade heart rate model. These results strongly support the view that healthy human heart rate is controlled to converge continually to a critical state.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Phys. Rev. Lett., to appear (2004

Four-electron shell structures and an interacting two-electron system in carbon nanotube quantum dots

Low-temperature transport measurements have been carried out on single-wall carbon nanotube quantum dots in a weakly coupled regime in magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla. Four-electron shell filling was observed, and the magnetic field evolution of each Coulomb peak was investigated, in which magnetic field induced spin flip and resulting spin polarization were observed. Excitation spectroscopy measurements have revealed Zeeman splitting of single particle states for one electron in the shell, and demonstrated singlet and triplet states with direct observation of the exchange splitting at zero-magnetic field for two electrons in the shell, the simplest example of the Hund's rule. The latter indicates the direct analogy to an artificial He atom.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Parylene Accelerometer Utilizing Spiral Beams

    Get PDF
This paper reports a Parylene accelerometer utilizing spiral beams. Since Parylene has intrinsic tensile stress, the resonant frequency ω_n of sensor structure is higher than that under no tensile stress. Considering the sensitivity of accelerometer is 1/ω_n^2 , the investigation of ω_n of a suspended structure supported by straight beams is carried out both theoretically and experimentally. As a result, it is proved that comparatively long beams are necessary for realizing the high sensitivity of a Parylene sensor with tensile stress. A spiral beam is effective for not only realizing a long beam in a limited space, but also realizing stress relaxation. Both Parylene accelerometer with straight beams and that with spiral beams are fabricated. Sensitivity of them is characterized, and the effectiveness of utilizing spiral beam is confirmed

    Wind-tunnel investigation of a large-scale model of a lift-cruise fan V/STOL aircraft with extended lift-cruise nacelles

    Get PDF
The aerodynamic characteristics of a large-scale model of a lift/cruise fan V/STOL aircraft were determined. The model was equipped with three fans, one mounted in the forward section of the fuselage in a lift mode, and two mounted on top of the wing adjacent to the fuselage in a lift/cruise mode. The data that were obtained include longitudinal and lateral-directional characteristics of the model, with the horizontal tail on and off, for both the powered-lift and cruise configurations. Lateral-directional characteristics were obtained with the horizontal and vertical tail sections removed. Powered-lift data were obtained at several wind-tunnel velocities and at several lift-cruise fan thrust vector angles by varying the position of the hooded deflectors from 0 deg (the cruise condition) to 90 deg

An investigation was conducted in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a large scale model of a lift/cruise fan V/STOL aircraft.
