THE PREVALENCE OF HEAMOPARASITIC INFECTION AMONG HUMANS IN ABAKALIKI, EBONYI STATE, NIGERIA

The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of heamoparasitic infection among humans in Abakaliki Metropolis. Out of 300 patients examined, 224 (74.6%) were parasitized for plasmodium falcparium giving a prevalence of 72.2% and 76.4% for male and female respectively. The analysis revealed that the highest prevalence of plasmodium faciparium was recorded among children under 0-11 years of age when compared to other age bracket. The Chi-square test showed that age is a significant difference in Plasmodium Falciparium infection rather than sex. Only one patient was positive for Trypanosome giving a prevalence of 0.33% among patients sampled. Two patients were positive with the microfilaria of Loa loa giving a prevalence of 0.67% with male & female having similar rate. However, there is need for mass education of the public and public enlightenment on the causes of transmission and control of these infections in other to minimize the rate of occurrence

Molar ratio -a predictor of calcium and trace minerals availability from fonio (Digitaria exilis) and ricebean (Vigna umbellata) based complementary foods

Background: Micronutrient malnutrition is a public health problem believed to occur even among higher income group. The major cause being poor bioavailability of minerals from plant foods. Objective: This study ascertained the micronutrient (vitamin A, iron, iodine and zinc) and molar ratio of calcium and trace minerals (iron, iodine and zinc) in four complementary diets formulated with fonio and ricebean. Methods: The study was carried out using 3x4x4 factorial design. Provitamin A, calcium, iron, zinc and iodine contents were determined using standard methods. Molar ratio of the minerals was determined using calculation method. Data was analysed using SPSS version 17.0 and means separated with Duncan's new multiple range test at p<0.05 level of significance. Results: Vitamin A and iodine were high in fonibean plus (FNBP) (226.1 and 60.14mg/100g) respectively, fonibean untreated (FNBU) (246.4 and 60.28mg/100g) and fonibean normal (FNBN) (214.3 and 56.31mg/100g) and low in fonibean minus (FNBM) (97.8 and 2.69mg/100g). The level of calcium in the FNBN (396.47mg/100g), FNBP (413.8mg/100g) and FNBU (412.32 mg/100 g) were significantly (p<0.05) higher than 400mg/100g recommended for complementary foods. Iron(6.77-8.30mg/100g) and zinc(4.32-4.85 mg/100g) contents of the formulations were significantly (p<0.05) lower than 14mg (iron) and 8.3mg (zinc) per 100g recommended for fortified complementary foods. Calcium and trace minerals had significantly (p<0.05) lower molar ratio values than their suggested desirable levels. Cacao swollen shoot virus detection and DNA barcoding of its vectors and putative vectors in Theobroma cacao L. by using polymerase chain reaction

Cacao swollen shoot virus (CSSV) is an endemic pathogen causing significant economic losses to cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) production in West Africa. There is limited updated report on the occurrence, spread, genetic diversity and species of CSSV and its mealybug vectors, especially in Nigeria. Nigeria is presently lagging behind in the search for resistance to CSSV and its vectors in T. cacao L. The present study aimed to map and screen for the presence of CSSV and its natural vectors – female mealybugs (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera) in cacao plantations in Nigeria. Symptomatic and asymptomatic cacao leaves and whole female mealybug samples were collected from major cacao-growing areas in Nigeria – Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, Ondo and Oyo States. A total of 2568 cacao leaves from 1052 cacao trees were screened with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using an open reading frame 1 (ORF 1) CSSV-specific primer pair. PCR screening of the mealybug species was performed using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. A combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and histology for morphological identification and DNA barcoding enabled to characterise the female mealybug species. The results revealed that CSSV and its mealybug vectors are present in the major cacao-growing areas in Nigeria. Although CSSV and its vectors have been previously reported in Cross River, Ondo and Oyo States, our results present the first documented evidence of CSSV emergence and its mealybug vectors in Abia, Akwa Ibom and Edo States. We also present the first report of Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi (Gimpel and Miller) mealybug species on cacao in Nigeria. In conclusion, it is pertinent to re-establish coordinated routine survey and monitoring of CSSV and its mealybug vector presence in T. cacao L. in Nigeria

An Interview Report on Users’ Perception about the Usability Performance of a Mobile E-Government Application

Mobile governance enables citizens to comfortably do business with government anywhere, any time. This provides an enriching experience to users as they use these platforms in their convenience and with comfort. MyEG Services Berhad ("MyEG") is a concessionaire for Malaysian Electronic-Government ("E-Government") MSC Flagship Application. MyEG manages the electronic channel that offers services from various Government agencies to the Malaysian citizens and businesses. The MyEG developed a mobile application that can be used to check summons, pay summons, renew road-tax and renew auto insurance. In this study, a usability assessment was done using interview approach to examine the experience of users (with regard to usability) of the mobile application. The interview was carried out after participants engaged and interacted with the application in some task’s scenarios. The assessment was done at Jabatan Teknologi Maklumat and Komunikasi, Politeknik Seberang Perai, with 15 volunteers who consisted of lecturers and students. The findings showed that overall the application was perceived usable and also enriched the experience of participants. Personalized screening intervals for kidney function in patients with chronic heart failure

Background: High mortality and rehospitalization rates demonstrate that improving risk assessment in heart failure patients remains challenging. Individual temporal evolution of kidney biomarkers is associated with poor clinical outcome in these patients and hence may carry the potential to move towards a personalized screening approach. Methods: In 263 chronic heart failure patients included in the prospective Bio-SHiFT cohort study, glomerular and tubular biomarker measurements were serially obtained according to a pre-scheduled, fixed trimonthly scheme. The primary endpoint (PE) comprised cardiac death, cardiac transplantation, left ventricular assist device implantation or heart failure hospitalization. Personalized scheduling of glomerular and tubular biomarker measurements was compared to fixed scheduling in individual patients by means of a simulation study, based on clinical characteristics of the Bio-SHiFT study. For this purpose, repeated biomarker measurements and the PE were jointly modeled. For personalized scheduling, using this fitted joint model, we determined the optimal time point of the next measurement based on the patient’s individual risk profile as estimated by the joint model and the maximum information gain on the patient’s prognosis. We compared the schedule’s capability of enabling timely intervention before the occurrence of the PE and number of measurements needed. Results: As compared to a pre-defined trimonthly scheduling approach, personalized scheduling of glomerular and tubular biomarker measurements showed similar performance with regard to prognostication, but required a median of 0.4–2.7 fewer measurements per year. Conclusion: Personalized scheduling is expected to reduce the number of patient visits and healthcare costs. Thus, it may contribute to efficient monitoring of chronic heart failure patients and could provide novel opportunities for timely adaptation of treatment. Prognostic impact of diabetes and prediabetes on survival outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure: A post-hoc analysis of the GISSI-HF (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nella Insufficienza Cardiaca-Heart Failure) trial

826BACKGROUND: The independent prognostic impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) and prediabetes mellitus (pre-DM) on survival outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure has been investigated in observational registries and randomized, clinical trials, but the results have been often inconclusive or conflicting. We examined the independent prognostic impact of DM and pre-DM on survival outcomes in the GISSI-HF (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nella Insufficienza Cardiaca-Heart Failure) trial. METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed the risk of all-cause death and the composite of all-cause death or cardiovascular hospitalization over a median follow-up period of 3.9 years among the 6935 chronic heart failure participants of the GISSI-HF trial, who were stratified by presence of DM (n=2852), pre-DM (n=2013), and non-DM (n=2070) at baseline. Compared with non-DM patients, those with DM had remarkably higher incidence rates of all-cause death (34.5% versus 24.6%) and the composite end point (63.6% versus 54.7%). Conversely, both event rates were similar between non-DM patients and those with pre-DM. Cox regression analysis showed that DM, but not pre-DM, was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.28-1.60) and of the composite end point (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.13-1.32), independently of established risk factors. In the DM subgroup, higher hemoglobin A1c was also independently associated with increased risk of both study outcomes (all-cause death: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.02-1.43; and composite end point: adjusted hazard ratio, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.01-1.29, respectively).
