    Factors Influencing the Decision of High School Graduating Seniors in Corozal, Puerto Rico, to Pursue University Studies

    A university education has become a ticket out of poverty for persons living in highly competitive labor markets. Consequently, access to higher education and the factors that motivate university enrollment have long been studied. However, prior to this study, no noteworthy studies with a focus on high school students and their perceptions about higher education had been conducted in Puerto Rico. This lack of research is surprising because Puerto Rico has one of the world\u27s most competitive job markets where a university degree can mean the difference between dependence on welfare and governmental assistance and a life of self-sufficiency and relative affluence. This study explored the characteristics and motivational forces that drive high school seniors in the three schools of one of Puerto Rico\u27s central towns, Corozal, to either continue or end their formal education after high school. The study employed demographic and personal information data, in addition to responses to questions from a survey instrument administered to all enrolled high school seniors in the town\u27s two public and one private high school. These data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression techniques, and, in the case of open-ended responses, qualitative content analysis. Logistic regression analysis determined that the significant indicators of university attendance among Corozal\u27s high school seniors are grade point average, residence type, maternal education level, private high school attendance, self-reported artistic talent and family size. Among the articulated reasons for not pursuing tertiary studies, respondents listed motivational factors such as needing a break from school, practical considerations such as the need to work to support their child or other family members, and low perceived returns on the time and effort required to get a college degree

    Hibridación de arquetipos femeninos latinoamericanos en Gabriela Mistral

    Gabriela Mistral positioned herself as part of the construction of the nation through her narration and role as a teacher, proposing a social system that included female prototypes. This article explores the fragmentation and negotiation of Latin American female archetypes in the life and literature of Mistral. The author investigates and explores traditional gender roles to question the role of women in society. Her literature favors and contributes to the construction of feminine aesthetics and corporality in the Latin American national discourse by incorporating the Marianist, peculiar, and new woman prototypes. Her essayistic work from the first decades of the 20th century that she calls “recados,” her poetic work from the “Vida” section of Desolación (1922) and “Locas mujeres” by Lagar (1938) expose ambiguous female archetypes focusing on the intellectual woman, teacher, mother, peasant, worker and artist. Her narrative mythologizes motherhood as a mandatory characteristic of women; however, she promotes the feminine intellect as a path to emancipation.Gabriela Mistral se posicionó como parte de la construcción de la nación a través de la narración y, en su rol de maestra, propuso un sistema social que incluía prototipos femeninos. Este artículo explora la fragmentación y negociación de arquetipos femeninos latinoamericanos que se reflejan a través de su vida y literatura. Mistral indaga y explora los roles de género tradicionales para cuestionar la función de la mujer en la sociedad. Su literatura favorece y contribuye a la edificación de estéticas y corporalidades femeninas al incorporar la hibridación de los prototipos de mujer marianista, peculiar y nueva en el imaginado nacional latinoamericano.     The Academic Network of European Disability Experts (ANED) aims to maintain a pan-European academic network in the disability field by engaging the expertise of existing networks, disability re-search centres and individual experts in Europe, and external advisors in partnership with European organisations representing disabled people and older people. The Academic Network of European Disability Experts (ANED), established following a tender procedure in December 2007, and is funded by the European Commission. The philosophy and aims focus on research that supports implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)1 and the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 towards the goal of full participation and equal opportunities for all disabled people. The work programme for 2012 builds on the results of the previous 4 years of the Network’s existence, by carrying out the following tasks, and linking to the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020: Task 1: Network management Task 2: Collecting and analysing data (mapping tool) Task 3: Legal framework and instruments Task 4: Accessibility Task 5: National strategies and social policies Task 6: Comparative data and indicators The objectives of Task 6 are: To access and prepare the required datasets for analysis (EU-SILC, LFS, EHIS, EQLS, etc.); To provide comparative data against a selection of quantitative indicators; To publish the selected indicators on the ANED website.     Statistik Bayesian adalah kaedah statistik yang digunakan secara meluas dalam pelbagai bidang seperti perubatan, sains sosial dan ekonomi. Ramalan Bayesian adalah salah satu kaedah statistik Bayesian. Ia bekerja dengan pelbagai kaedah. Kajian ini turut membincangkan tiga kaedah ramalan Bayesian. Terdapat satu sampel, dua sampel dan sampel pelbagai ramalan. Tiga kaedah bertindak balas terhadap motivasi praktikal yang memerlukan data sampel kurang, dalam kebanyakan kajian statistik digunakan. Oleh itu, sampel yang akan datang adalah istilah yang penting dalam tesis ini. Pendekatan Bayesian menggunakan ramalan untuk statistik tertib masa depan berdasarkan data tertib yang diperhatikan dan fungsi ketumpatan ramalan memberi selang ramalan Bayesian untuk statistik tertib masa depan. Taburan fungsi kuasa teritlak piawai adalah dasar untuk tiga kaedah dengan menggunakan teori Bayes untuk mencapai had rendah dan had atas yang sempit bagi selang ramalan Bayesian 95% dan selang ramalan Bayesian 99%. Bayesian statistics is a statistical method that is widely used in many fields, including medicine, social and applied sciences. These fields occasionally have little or limited information about their populations. Therefore, using new techniques that require fewer samples while providing the same quality as the case of available samples is necessary. Bayesian prediction is a commonly used tool in Bayesian statistics. This study modifies three Bayesian prediction methods: one-, two- and multi-sample predictions. Bayesian prediction modified method does not require the many samples. Therefore, a future sample is a significant term in this thesis. Our Bayesian prediction modified method used a prediction for the future order statistics based on the observed ordered data, and predictive densities provided the Bayesian prediction intervals for the future order statistics. The standard generalized power function distribution serves as the basis for the three modified methods by applying Bayes' theory to achieve close lower and upper limits for the 95% and 99% Bayesian prediction intervals

    Competências e habilidades na BNCC: análise reflexiva de uma prática pedagógica produzida e aplicada em uma escola da rede privada do município de Conceição das Alagoas/MG

    This paper proposes a reflexive analysis of the limitations of the concepts of skills and competencies proposed by the National Common Curricular Base for teaching work. This analysis is based on a pedagogical practice applied to an 8th grade class of elementary school of the private school system of the municipality of Conceição das Alagoas/MG. The objective of the applied pedagogical practice was to evaluate whether the concepts related to BNCC can somehow limit the teaching work. Therefore, the process of construction of the lesson plan was described and reported in the text, in order to promote a better visualization of the practical pedagogical processes adopted. Although the BNCC is a current document, it is possible to notice that in its elaboration process there was no effective participation of teachers and that this causes a ignorance about what are the real intentions of the document. With this, the teacher develops his practices based on the experiences and reality of the student, not considering as reference the skills and competencies of the BNCC.Este artículo propone un análisis reflexivo de las limitaciones de los conceptos de habilidades y competencias propuestos por la Base Curricular Nacional Común para el trabajo docente. Este análisis se basa en una práctica pedagógica aplicada a una clase de 8º grado de la escuela primaria del sistema de escuelas privadas del municipio de Conceição das Alagoas/MG. El objetivo de la práctica pedagógica aplicada fue evaluar si los conceptos relacionados con BNCC pueden limitar de alguna manera el trabajo docente. Por lo tanto, el proceso de construcción del plan de la lección fue descrito e informado en el texto, con el fin de promover una mejor visualización de los procesos pedagógicos prácticos adoptados. Aunque el BNCC es un documento actual, es posible notar que en su proceso de elaboración no hubo participación efectiva de los docentes y que esto provoca un desconocimiento sobre cuáles son las verdaderas intenciones del documento. Con esto, el profesor desarrolla sus prácticas a partir de las experiencias y la realidad de los estudiantes, no considerando como referencia las habilidades y competencias del BNCC.O presente trabalho propõe uma análise reflexiva das limitações dos conceitos de habilidades e competências propostos pela Base Nacional Comum Curricular ao trabalho docente. Tal análise é feita a partir de uma prática pedagógica aplicada à uma turma de 8º ano do ensino fundamental da rede particular de ensino do município de Conceição das Alagoas/MG. O objetivo da prática pedagógica aplicada foi avaliar se os conceitos referentes à BNCC podem, de alguma forma, limitar o trabalho docente. Diante disso, o processo de construção do plano de aula foi descrito e relatado no texto, a fim de promover uma melhor visualização dos processos práticos pedagógicos adotados. Apesar de a BNCC ser um documento vigente, é possível perceber que em seu processo de elaboração não houve efetiva participação dos professores e que isso acarreta um desconhecimento acerca de quais são as reais intenções do documento. Com isso, o docente desenvolve suas práticas a partir das vivencias e realidade do aluno, não considerando como referência as habilidades e competências da BNCC
