Thermal annealing study of swift heavy-ion irradiated zirconia
Sintered samples of monoclinic zirconia (alpha-ZrO2) have been irradiated at
room temperature with 6.0-GeV Pb ions in the electronic slowing down regime.
X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements showed
unambiguously that a transition to the 'metastable' tetragonal phase
(beta-ZrO2) occurred at a fluence of 6.5x10^12 cm-2 for a large electronic
stopping power value (approx 32.5 MeV m-1). At a lower fluence of
1.0x10^12 cm-2, no such phase transformation was detected. The
back-transformation from beta- to alpha-ZrO2 induced by isothermal or
isochronal thermal annealing was followed by XRD analysis. The
back-transformation started at an onset temperature around 500 K and was
completed by 973 K. Plots of the residual tetragonal phase fraction deduced
from XRD measurements versus annealing temperature or time are analyzed with
first- or second-order kinetic models. An activation energy close to 1 eV for
the back-transformation process is derived either from isothermal annealing
curves, using the so-called "cross-cut" method, or from the isochronal
annealing curve, using a second-order kinetic law. Correlation with the thermal
recovery of ion-induced paramagnetic centers monitored by EPR spectroscopy is
discussed. Effects of crystallite size evolution and oxygen migration upon
annealing are also addressed
Cluster Headache and the Comprehension Paradox
Patients with primary headache disorders such as cluster headache cycle between being entirely healthy and almost completely incapacitated. Sick leave or reduced performance due to headache attacks demands flexibility by their social counterparts. The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that headache patients cause frustration that grows with the times colleagues have to take over their work. In this study, we analysed cluster headache patientsâ answers to an online questionnaire. Participants self-reported their number of sick days, the number of days on which leisure activities were missed and whether they felt understood by colleagues and family. We then investigated the correlation between the number of sick days and the proportion of patients feeling understood by colleagues and friends. We found that feeling understood by colleagues and friends decreases with a growing number of sick days. However, when sick days accrue further, this proportion increases again. The number of sick days correlates similarly with both colleaguesâ and friendsâ understanding. The number of cluster headache patients feeling understood by others decreases with an increasing number of sick days. Their social circlesâ frustration with the patientsâ failure to meet obligations and expectations are a likely reason. With a growing number of sick days, however, the portion of patients feeling understood rises again despite patients meeting othersâ expectations even less. This âcomprehension paradoxâ implies the influence of other factors. We suspect that growing numbers of sick days foster understanding as the disability of the disease becomes increasingly apparent
Ethylene signalling affects susceptibility of tomatoes to Salmonella
Fresh fruits and vegetables are increasingly recognized as important reservoirs of human pathogens, and therefore, significant attention has been directed recently to understanding mechanisms of the interactions between plants and enterics, like Salmonella. A screen of tomato cultivars for their susceptibility to Salmonella revealed significant differences in the ability of this human pathogen to multiply within fruits; expression of the Salmonella genes (cysB, agfB, fadH) involved in the interactions with tomatoes depended on the tomato genotype and maturity stage. Proliferation of Salmonella was strongly reduced in the tomato mutants with defects in ethylene synthesis, perception and signal transduction. While mutation in the ripening-related ethylene receptor Nr resulted only in a modest reduction in Salmonella numbers within tomatoes, strong inhibition of the Salmonella proliferation was observed in rin and nor tomato mutants. RIN and NOR are regulators of ethylene synthesis and ripening. A commercial tomato variety heterozygous for rin was less susceptible to Salmonella under the greenhouse conditions but not when tested in the field over three production seasons
Activation of JNK1 contributes to dystrophic muscle pathogenesis
AbstractDuchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) originates from deleterious mutations in the dystrophin gene, with a complete loss of the protein product [1, 2]. Subsequently, the disease is manifested in severe striated muscle wasting and death in early adulthood [3]. Dystrophin provides a structural base for the assembly of an integral membrane protein complex [4]. As such, dystrophin deficiency leads to an altered mechanical integrity of the myofiber and a predisposition to contraction-induced damage [5â7]. However, the development of myofiber degeneration prior to an observed mechanical defect has been documented in various dystrophic models [8, 9]. Although activation of a detrimental signal transduction pathway has been suggested as a probable cause, a specific cellular cascade has yet to be defined. Here, it is shown that murine models of DMD displayed a muscle-specific activation of JNK1. Independent activation of JNK1 resulted in defects in myotube viability and integrity in vitro, similar to a dystrophic phenotype. In addition, direct muscle injection of an adenoviral construct containing the JNK1 inhibitory protein, JIP1, dramatically attenuated the progression of dystrophic myofiber destruction. Taken together, these results suggest that a JNK1-mediated signal cascade is a conserved feature of dystrophic muscle and contributes to the progression of the disease pathogenesis
High resolution SZ observations at the IRAM 30-m telescope with NIKA
High resolution observations of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect
are necessary to allow the use of clusters of galaxies as a probe for large
scale structures at high redshifts. With its high resolution and dual-band
capability at millimeter wavelengths, the NIKA camera can play a significant
role in this context. NIKA is based on newly developed Kinetic Inductance
Detectors (KIDs) and operates at the IRAM 30m telescope, Pico Veleta, Spain. In
this paper, we give the status of the NIKA camera, focussing on the KID
technology. We then present observations of three galaxy clusters: RX
J1347.5-1145 as a demonstrator of the NIKA capabilities and the recent
observations of CL J1226.9+3332 (z = 0.89) and MACS J0717.5+3745 (z = 0.55). We
also discuss prospects for the final NIKA2 camera, which will have a 6.5
arcminute field of view with about 5000 detectors in two bands at 150 and 260
GHz
