Multimedia technologies and online task-based foreign language teaching-learning

    Get PDF
Teaching and learning a foreign language at a distance implies many challenges, namely regarding oral skills. At Universidade Aberta (the Portuguese Open University), and taking into account its virtual pedagogical model (Pereira, 2007) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Alves, 2001), we suggest curricular paths which include online communicative practices, both oral and written, within the present pedagogical offer, following a student- centred, task-oriented approach. Thus, in this text, we share some examples of training activities in German, French and English, focusing on oral practice, and based on digital resources. These digital resources comprise multimedia materials, either produced by the teachers or the students, as well as other materials available on the web 2.0. Our teaching and research practice within the field of foreign languages and in e-learning, in particular, leads us to conclude that the multimedia resources used are suitable for the online teaching and learning of foreign languages (see third question of questionnaire), especially for professionally engaged adults, as is the case with Universidade Aberta’s students, providing them with real-life situations that foster the teaching-learning of languages in the virtual environment. We include responses to a questionnaire survey filled out by a group of students.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The partial compactification of the universal centralizer

The universal centralizer of a semisimple algebraic group G is the family of centralizers of regular elements in Lie(G), parametrized by their conjugacy classes. It has a natural symplectic structure inherited via Hamiltonian reduction from the cotangent bundle T*G. We construct a smooth log-symplectic partial compactification of the universal centralizer where each fiber is compactified inside the wondeful compactification of G

DIGITAL: multidisciplinary and multidimensional in the classrooms

In this paper our aim is to analyse and present some pedagogical paths that prefigure and guide the teaching-learning devices developed "around" the digital tools. In this context issues related to the implementation with teaching methodologies and teaching techniques acquire a new dimension due to the need of transpose them into online learning environments (technologies to teach to technologies to learn). This starting point is a deep understanding from the analysis of actors in the online learning process: student, teacher, platform and e- contents. Thus, it is our goal in this chapter to promote digital education, think of teaching methods, tools and learning processes, to adapted to eLearninginfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Single cell electroporation on chip

    Get PDF
In this thesis the results of the development of microfluidic cell trap devices for single cell electroporation are described, which are to be used for gene transfection. The performance of two types of Lab-on-a-Chip trapping devices was tested using beads and cells, whereas the functionality for single cell electroporation of these chips was verified by means of gene transfection studies

For scientists, for students or for the public? : the shifting roles of natural history museums

    Get PDF
This article aims to discuss the main roles of natural history museums and to show how these purposes have evolved and adapted throughout the museums’ history, as a response to the development of natural sciences and societal change, from their creation in the 18th century to the present. It strives to demonstrate how the balance between research, teaching and disseminating knowledge to the public has successively shifted, without ever forsaking any of these functions. It is focused on Portuguese museums, but examining their place within international trends

Fatores determinantes da eficiência do setor bancário em Portugal: uma aplicação através de modelos de regressão fracional

    Get PDF
The participation in the Euro area and the current financial crisis substantially conditioned the development of the Portuguese banking industry, for which is expected a continuous fall in income and a growing competitive pressure, improving the need to look carefully to issues as efficiency as an essential survival factor. Efficiency indicators of the main banks operating in Portugal were measured through DEA methodology. The application of two-stage models allowed circumventing the usual problems inherent to the coexistence of the production and intermediation approaches. The application of regression for proportions, more appropriate than traditional linear and Tobit regressions, to deal with the fractional nature of the DEA scores, allowed the identification of efficiency determinant factors for the main banks operating in Portugal. The fractional regression models demonstrate evidence of improved specification comparing to traditional regression models. The variables that appear to major influence on overall efficiency are internationalization, size and type of ownership of capital.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Salivary inflammatory biomarkers during initial orthodontic tooth movement

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movement is a complex process involving a number of inflammatory and anabolic/catabolic pathways. Further, successful treatment depends on proper timing of orthodontic measures with regard to patient’s growth spurt. Saliva analysis has emerged as a non-invasive collection method to track biomarkers relevant to both tooth movement biology and growth prediction. The aim of the present study was to analyze changes in tooth movement and assess relationships with salivary levels of alkaline phosphatase, IGF-1, TGF-β1, testosterone, BMP-2, BMP-4, and BMP-9t. METHODS: Twenty seven healthy patients (17 females, 10 males) with a mean age of 13.3 years, undergoing orthodontic treatment with a non-extraction treatment plan were selected for the study. Height, weight, and other demographic features were recorded; maxillary and mandibular alginate impressions were obtained, and 10 mL saliva samples were taken at the initial visit (T0), after 4 weeks (T1), 3 months (T2), and then at 3-month intervals (T3, T4, T5). Casts were made from alginate impressions. Little’s Irregularity Index, intercanine widths, intermolar widths, arch lengths, and tooth widths were measured. Saliva samples were analyzed for the concentrations of alkaline phosphatase, IGF-1, TGF-β1, testosterone, BMP-2, BMP-4, and BMP-9 by multiplex immunoassay and/or ELISA. Data were analyzed using correlation coefficients and ANOVA. RESULTS: Over the six timepoints, there were statistically significant changes in the level of testosterone (p < 0.05) and Little’s Irregularity Index (p < 0.01), with the most significant changes occurring at the beginning of treatment (T0 to T1). Statistically significant correlations (p < 0.05) were observed between testosterone and height/weight, intercanine width and intermolar width, BMP-4 and intercanine/intermolar width, alkaline phosphatase and testosterone, alkaline phosphatase and TGF-β1, and among the BMPs. CONCLUSION: The changes in Little’s Irregularity Index reflects successful progress of the orthodontic treatment. The correlations observed among the various salivary concentrations suggest a number of further directions for study
