Superconducting Resonator-Rydberg Atom Hybrid in the Strong Coupling Regime

We propose a promising hybrid quantum system, where a highly-excited atom strongly interacts with a superconducting LC oscillator via the electric field of capacitor. An external electrostatic field is applied to tune the energy spectrum of atom. The atomic qubit is implemented by two eigenstates near an avoided-level crossing in the DC Stark map of Rydberg atom. Varying the electrostatic field brings the atomic-qubit transition on- or off-resonance to the microwave resonator, leading to a strong atom-resonator coupling with an extremely large cooperativity. Like the nonlinearity induced by Josephson junctions in superconducting circuits, the large atom-resonator interface disturbs the harmonic potential of resonator, resulting in an artificial two-level particle. Different universal two-qubit logic gates can also be performed on our hybrid system within the space where an atomic qubit couples to a single photon with an interaction strength much larger than any relaxation rates, opening the door to the cavity-mediated state transmission.Comment: 4 figure

Endometrioza i mięsakorak – hipotetyczny związek czy udowodniona wspólna ścieżka patogenetyczna? Opis przypadku mięsakoraka jelita grubego wychodzącego z ogniska endometriozy

We present the first case of a patient with a synchronic occurrence of three neoplasms: non-small cell lung cancer, serous cancer of the ovary, and carcinosarcoma of the colon. Moreover, the possible origin of the carcinosarcoma is an endometriotic focus, which is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in women with no history of endometriotic treatment. Immunohistochemical staining of the carcinosarcoma was positive for CD10, estrogen receptors and desmin – typical markers for endometriotic foci. The growth of endometriosis depends on estrogen, which is produced at reduced levels after menopause. However, in some cases endometriosis could be diagnosed de novo in postmenopausal women. On the basis of the reported patient we discuss possible correlations between endometriosis and carcinosarcoma, as well as treatment methods of carcinosarcoma.

Processing, thermal and mechanical properties of composite laminates with natural fibers prepregs

    Get PDF
This work manufactured prepregs by impregnating discontinuous curaua fibers with B-stage epoxy resin. The prepreg layers were then stacked to produce laminates by hot compression. Alkaline treatments were previously applied to the curaua fibers to improve their interface with the polymer matrix. Then, the prepregs and the final composites were studied regarding their thermal, dynamic mechanical, mechanical, and morphological behavior. The treatments promoted defibrillation by removing lignin and hemicellulose from the fibers, which allowed better impregnation of the treated fibers with epoxy resin. In general, laminates that used treated fibers exhibited the largest storage modulus in the glassy region. The mechanical results showed the laminates produced with treated fibers prepregs presented a highest tensile and flexural resistance than those manufactured with untreated fibers and neat epoxy resin. The NaOH-treated curaua/epoxy laminate exhibited high tensile strength (56.2 MPa) and modulus (3.3 GPa). Overall, fracture morphology indicated better fiber adhesion for the treated fiber composites. The results demonstrate that natural fibers prepregs can be successfully produced and present proper physical and mechanical behavior in components

Warthin Tumor-Like Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma with a Minor Dedifferentiated Component: Report of a Case with Clinicopathologic Considerations

    Get PDF
Warthin tumor-like papillary thyroid carcinoma is an uncommon variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma. We report a rare case of Warthin tumor-like variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma with a dedifferentiated component consisting of a solid tumor area composed of neoplastic cells with a spindle to tall cell morphology associated with marked nuclear pleomorphism, atypical mitoses, and foci of necrosis. Although our patient presented with a locally aggressive disease (T3 N1b Mo), she is disease-free without radioiodine therapy after a 23-month follow-up period. We emphasize that Warthin tumor-like papillary thyroid carcinoma, like other morphological variants of papillary carcinoma, may occasionally undergo dedifferentiation. As this component may be only focally detectable, we suggest an extensive sampling of all large-sized (>3 cm) papillary thyroid carcinoma. Recognition of any dedifferentiated component in a Warthin tumor-like papillary thyroid carcinoma should be reported, including its percentage, because it may reflect a more aggressive clinical course

Node-by-node disassembly of a mutualistic interaction web driven by species introductions

    Get PDF
Interaction webs summarize the diverse interactions among species in communities. The addition or loss of particular species and the alteration of key interactions can lead to the disassembly of the entire interaction web, although the nontrophic effects of species loss on interaction webs are poorly understood. We took advantage of ongoing invasions by a suite of exotic species to examine their impact in terms of the disassembly of an interaction web in Patagonia, Argentina. We found that the reduction of one species (a host of a keystone mistletoe species) resulted in diverse indirect effects that led to the disassembly of an interaction web through the loss of the mistletoe, two key seed-dispersers (a marsupial and a bird), and a pollinator (hummingbird). Our results demonstrate that the gains and losses of species are both consequences and drivers of global change that can lead to underappreciated cascading coextinctions through the disruption of mutualisms.Fil: Rodriguez Cabal, Mariano Alberto. Giant cystic brain metastasis from ovarian papillary serous adenocarcinoma: Case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
Background: Ovarian brain metastases represent a very rare occurrence and without treatment, prognosis is very poor, with a median survival of one month. We present a unique case of a patient affected by a giant cystic intracerebral metastasis (>7 cm) secondary to an ovarian papillary serous adenocarcinoma, along with a review of the literature regarding large cystic ovarian metastases and their management. Case description: A 49-years-old female patient was admitted to our institution because she presented progressive headache and altered consciousness. Brain computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the presence of a giant left frontal intracerebral cystic lesion. The patient underwent a surgical removal of an ovarian high-grade papillary serous adenocarcinoma three years before. We performed a left frontal craniotomy and microsurgical removal of the brain lesion, achieving a safe macroscopic total resection, thanks to intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM). The post-operative period was uneventful with a complete recovery. Post-operative brain MRI showed a complete removal of the lesion. Conclusions: The presence of a giant cystic metastasis with symptoms of intracranial hypertension needs a radical and safe surgical removal, along with the management of a multidisciplinary oncologic group. SIRT1 Mediates Melatonin’s Effects on Microglial Activation in Hypoxia: In Vitro and In Vivo Evidence

    Get PDF
Melatonin exerts direct neuroprotection against cerebral hypoxic damage, but the mechanisms of its action on microglia have been less characterized. Using both in vitro and in vivo models of hypoxia, we here focused on the role played by silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) in melatonin’s effects on microglia. Viability of rat primary microglia or microglial BV2 cells and SH-SY5Y neurons was significantly reduced after chemical hypoxia with CoCl2 (250 µM for 24 h). Melatonin (1 µM) significantly attenuated CoCl2 toxicity on microglia, an effect prevented by selective SIRT1 inhibitor EX527 (5 µM) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor BML-275 (2 µM). CoCl2 did not modify SIRT1 expression, but prevented nuclear localization, while melatonin appeared to restore it. CoCl2 induced nuclear localization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), an effect contrasted by melatonin in an EX527-dependent fashion. Treatment of microglia with melatonin attenuated potentiation of neurotoxicity. Common carotid occlusion was performed in p7 rats, followed by intraperitoneal injection of melatonin (10 mg/kg). After 24 h, the number of Iba1+ microglia in the hippocampus of hypoxic rats was significantly increased, an effect not prevented by melatonin. At this time, SIRT1 was only detectable in the amoeboid, Iba1+ microglial population selectively localized in the corpus callosum. In these cells, nuclear localization of SIRT1 was significantly lower in hypoxic animals, an effect prevented by melatonin. NF-kB showed an opposite expression pattern, where nuclear localization in Iba1+ cells was significantly higher in hypoxic, but not in melatonin-treated animals. Our findings provide new evidence for a direct effect of melatonin on hypoxic microglia through SIRT1, which appears as a potential pharmacological target against hypoxic-derived neuronal damage.Fil: Merlo, Sara. The invisibility of psychological violence against children

    Get PDF
Introduction: Domestic violence is a social and public health problem and its rates are currently increasing. It is present in all social classes, ethnicities and educational levels. Objective: To analyse the actions done by health professionals who work in Basic Health Units (BHUs) to recognise cases of psychological violence against children. Methods: This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. It used an analysis of the thematic data content. Interviews were conducted with 24 professionals working in BHUs in a city in southern Brazil. Results: It was observed that physical symptoms are prioritised and there is an underestimation of mental health issues, especially those relating to psychological violence. Conclusions: It was identifi ed that professionals from the BHUs cannot intervene effectively because of the diffi culty in identifying cases of domestic violence and their lack of training for dealing with cases of violence against children
