    On the systematics of Trypoxylon scrobiferum Richards and T. anapaike Amarante with the recognition of a new species group in the subgenus Trypoxylon (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae: Trypoxylini)

    The males of Trypoxylon scrobiferum Richards and T. anapaike Amarante are described for the first time and their genitalia illustrated. These species are demonstrated to represent a monophyletic group, and the scrobiferum species group is established for them. The scrobiferum species group is assigned to the subgenus Trypoxylon. This represents a new subgeneric combination for T. scrobiferum Richards.Os machos previamente desconhecidos de Trypoxylon scrobiferum Richards e Trypoxylon anapaike Amarante são descritos e a sua genitália ilustrada.     A synonymic catalog of the Neotropical Crabronidae and Sphecidae (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)

    A synonymyc catalogue for the species of Neotropical Crabronidae and Sphecidae is presented, including all synonyms, geographical distribution and pertinent references. The catalogue includes 152 genera and 1834 species (1640 spp. in Crabronidae, 194 spp. in Sphecidae), plus 190 species recorded from Nearctic Mexico (168 spp. in Crabronidae, 22 spp. in Sphecidae). The former Sphecidae (sensu Menke, 1997 and auct.) is divided in two families: Crabronidae (Astatinae, Bembicinae, Crabroninae, Pemphredoninae and Philanthinae) and Sphecidae (Ampulicinae and Sphecinae). The following subspecies are elevated to species: Podium aureosericeum Kohl, 1902; Podium bugabense Cameron, 1888. New names are proposed for the following junior homonyms: Cerceris modica new name for Cerceris modesta Smith, 1873, non Smith, 1856; Liris formosus new name for Liris bellus Rohwer, 1911, non Lepeletier, 1845; Liris inca new name for Liris peruanus Brèthes, 1926 non Brèthes, 1924; and Trypoxylon guassu new name for Trypoxylon majus Richards, 1934 non Trypoxylon figulus var. majus Kohl, 1883

    Validation of a method for ionospheric electron density reconstruction by means of vertical incidence data during quiet and storm periods

    A preliminary validation of the technique developed using the NeQuick ionospheric model and the «effective ionization parameter» Az, based on vertical total electron content data ingestion, was carried out in a previous study. The current study was performed to extend the analyzed conditions and confirm the results. The method to validate this technique is based on a comparison between hourly F2 peak values measured with Vertical Incidence (VI) soundings and those calculated with the new technique. Data corresponding to different hours and seasons (equinox, summer solstice, and winter solstice) during the period 2000-2003 (high and medium solar activity conditions) were compared for all available ionosonde stations. The results show a good agreement between foF2 and hmF2 values obtained with the new technique and measurements from vertical incidence soundings during quiet and storms conditions

    Using hydropower waterway locks for energy storage and renewable energies integration

    Waterway are one of the most efficient means for transportation. It can be applied for energy storage demonstrating the potential of using these structures with renewable energy systems, here, through an analysis of energy alternatives. This paper analyzes two different solutions for energy supply, using the Locks of the Tucuruí powerplant, in Brazil. A photovoltaic power station is compared to a hybrid system composed by photovoltaic and pumped storage. The alternatives are discussed technically and economically. The energy costs of the scenarios are calculated based on the evolution of the expenses and the related payback time are found. The water resource is exploited responsibly, keeping balanced the pumped and turbined volumes of water. The grid works as an intermediate storage and allows the operations with a single pump-turbine conversion. Its location lowers down the initial investment in favor of the hybrid system as the more viable alternative. It was found that the locks could be used to handle up to 263 kW and 387 kW of electricity in turbine and pump mode, respectively. This paper gathers crucial data on the use of hydropower in waterways locks that support the integration of renewable energies surrounding the locks. In addition, the use of pumped storage plants to store energy from intermittent sources, present themselves as an innovative opportunity to, using the own head available at facility, improve the financial return of meeting the energy demand through an economically and environmentally responsible energy system, may be useful in similar facilities around the world

    Longitudinal Differences Observed in the Ionospheric F-Region During the Major Geomagnetic Storm of March 31, 2001

    A new ionospheric sounding station using a Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI) was established for routine measurements by the “Universidade do Vale do Paraiba (UNIVAP)” at S˜ao Jos´e dos Campos (23.2_ S, 45.9_ W), Brazil, in August 2000. A major geomagnetic storm with gradual commencement at about 01:00 UT was observed on 31 March 2001. In this paper, we present and discuss salient features from the ionospheric sounding measurements carried out at S. J. Campos on the three consecutive UT days 30 March (quiet), 31 March (disturbed) and 1 April (recovery) 2001. During most of the storm period, the foF2 values showed negative phase, whereas during the two storm-time peaks, large F-region height variations were observed. In order to study the longitudinal differences observed in the F-region during the storm, the simultaneous ionospheric sounding measurements carried out at S. J. Campos, El Arenosillo (37.1_ N, 6.7_W), Spain, Okinawa (26.3_ N, 127.8_ E), Japan and Wakkanai (45.5_ N, 141.7_ E), Japan, during the period 30 March–1 April 2001, have been analyzed. A comparison of the observed ionospheric parameters (h0F and foF2) in the two longitudinal zones (1. Japanese and 2. Brazilian-Spanish) shows both similarities and differences associated with the geomagnetic disturbances. Some latitudinal differences are also observed in the two longitudinal zones. In addition, global ionospheric TEC maps from the worldwide network of GPS receivers are presented, showing widespread TEC changes during both the main and recovery phases of the storm. The ionospheric sounding measurements are compared with the ASPEN-TIMEGCM model runs appropriate for the storm conditions. The model results produce better agreement during the quiet period. During the disturbed period, some of the observed F-region height variations are well reproduced by the model results. The model foF2 and TEC results differ considerably during the recovery period and indicate much stronger negative phase at all the stations, particularly at the low-latitude ones

    A model assisted ionospheric electron density reconstruction method based on vertical TEC data ingestion

    A technique to reconstruct the electron density of the ionosphere starting from total electron content values has been developed using the NeQuick ionospheric electron density model driven by its effective ionization parameter Az. The technique is based on the computation of Az values for a suitable worldwide grid of points. A simple way to obtain relevant Az grids is to use global vertical Total Electron Content (TEC) maps to define for each grid point as Az value, the one that minimizes the difference between the experimental and the modeled vertical TEC. Having a global grid of Az values it is possible to compute the electron density at any point in the ionosphere using NeQuick. As a consequence, slant TEC values for specific ground station to satellite links or ionosphere peak parameter values at any location can be calculated. The results of the comparisons between experimental and reconstructed slant TEC as well as experimental and reconstructed peak parameters values indicate that the proposed reconstruction method can be used to reproduce the observed ionosphere in a realistic way

    GASTRO library I: the simulated chemodynamical properties of several GSE-like stellar halos

    The Milky Way stellar halo contains relics of ancient mergers that tell the story of our Galaxy's formation. Some of them are identified due to their similarity in energy, actions and chemistry, referred to as the "chemodynamical space", and are often attributed to distinct merger events. It is also known that our Galaxy went through a significant merger event that shaped the local stellar halo during its first Gyr. Previous studies using NN-body only and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have shown that such single massive merger can produce several "signatures" in the chemodynamical space, which can potentially be misinterpreted as distinct merger events. Motivated by these, in this work we use a subset of the GASTRO, library which consists of several SPH+NN-body models of single accretion event in a Milky Way-like galaxy. Here, we study models with orbital properties similar to the main merger event of our Galaxy and explore the implications to known stellar halo substructures. We find that: i.i. supernova feedback efficiency influences the satellite's structure and orbital evolution, resulting in distinct chemodynamical features for models with the same initial conditions, ii.ii. very retrograde high energy stars are the most metal-poor of the accreted dwarf galaxy and could be misinterpreted as a distinct merger iii.iii. the most bound stars are more metal-rich in our models, the opposite of what is observed in the Milky Way, suggesting a secondary massive merger, and finally iv.iv. our models can reconcile other known substructures to an unique progenitor.Comment: Published in Ap
