Infinitesimal Idealization, Easy Road Nominalism, and Fractional Quantum Statistics
It has been recently debated whether there exists a so-called âeasy roadâ to nominalism. In this essay, I attempt to fill a lacuna in the debate by making a connection with the literature on infinite and infinitesimal idealization in science through an example from mathematical physics that has been largely ignored by philosophers. Specifically, by appealing to John Nortonâs distinction between idealization and approximation, I argue that the phenomena of fractional quantum statistics bears negatively on Mary Lengâs proposed path to easy road nominalism, thereby partially defending Mark Colyvanâs claim that there is no easy road to nominalism
Quantum Rings in Electromagnetic Fields

quantum rings (quantum rings pierced by a magnetic flux resulting in AharonovBohm
oscillations of their electronic spectra) in external electromagnetic fields.
It studies two problems. The first problem deals with a single-electron AharonovBohm
quantum ring pierced by a magnetic flux and subjected to an in-plane (lateral)
electric field. We predict magneto-oscillations of the ring electric dipole moment.
These oscillations are accompanied by periodic changes in the selection rules for
inter-level optical transitions in the ring allowing control of polarization properties
of the associated terahertz radiation. The second problem treats a single-mode microcavity
with an embedded Aharonov-Bohm quantum ring which is pierced by a
magnetic flux and subjected to a lateral electric field. We show that external electric
and magnetic fields provide additional means of control of the emission spectrum
of the system. In particular, when the magnetic flux through the quantum ring is
equal to a half-integer number of the magnetic flux quanta, a small change in the
lateral electric field allows for tuning of the energy levels of the quantum ring into
resonance with the microcavity mode, thus providing an efficient way to control
the quantum ring-microcavity coupling strength. Emission spectra of the system are
discussed for several combinations of the applied magnetic and electric fields
The Potential Energy Surface in Molecular Quantum Mechanics
The idea of a Potential Energy Surface (PES) forms the basis of almost all
accounts of the mechanisms of chemical reactions, and much of theoretical
molecular spectroscopy. It is assumed that, in principle, the PES can be
calculated by means of clamped-nuclei electronic structure calculations based
upon the Schr\"{o}dinger Coulomb Hamiltonian. This article is devoted to a
discussion of the origin of the idea, its development in the context of the Old
Quantum Theory, and its present status in the quantum mechanics of molecules.

Maternal blood cadmium, lead and arsenic levels, nutrient combinations, and offspring birthweight
Abstract Background Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) are common environmental contaminants that have been associated with lower birthweight. Although some essential metals may mitigate exposure, data are inconsistent. This study sought to evaluate the relationship between toxic metals, nutrient combinations and birthweight among 275 mother-child pairs. Methods Non-essential metals, Cd, Pb, As, and essential metals, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) were measured in maternal whole blood obtained during the first trimester using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Folate concentrations were measured by microbial assay. Birthweight was obtained from medical records. We used quantile regression to evaluate the association between toxic metals and nutrients due to their underlying wedge-shaped relationship. Ordinary linear regression was used to evaluate associations between birth weight and toxic metals. Results After multivariate adjustment, the negative association between Pb or Cd and a combination of Fe, Se, Ca and folate was robust, persistent and dose-dependent (p < 0.05). However, a combination of Zn, Cu, Mn and Mg was positively associated with Pb and Cd levels. While prenatal blood Cd and Pb were also associated with lower birthweight. Fe, Se, Ca and folate did not modify these associations. Conclusion Small sample size and cross-sectional design notwithstanding, the robust and persistent negative associations between some, but not all, nutrient combinations with these ubiquitous environmental contaminants suggest that only some recommended nutrient combinations may mitigate toxic metal exposure in chronically exposed populations. Larger longitudinal studies are required to confirm these findings
