    Fish-Kills in the Urban Stretch of the Tiber River After a Flash-Storm: Investigative Monitoring with Effect-Based Methods, Targeted Chemical Analyses, and Fish Assemblage Examinations

    In 2020 and 2021, fish-kills events occurred in the Tiber river in the city of Rome. These events, which caused the death of thousands of fish of different species (e.g., Barbus spp., Cyprinus carpio, Squalius spp.), were preceded the days before by severe flash-storms. Heavy rains in urban areas in recent years are linked to climate change and fish-kills events. With the aim to investigate the causes of these events, effect-based methods (EBMs) and targeted chemical analyses have been performed on a specific site of river Tiber in the center of the city. Additionally, examination and classification of the floating dead fishes have been performed. The chemical analysis performed on several groups of contaminants showed the presence of some pharmaceuticals, insecticides, and PFAS at up to ng/L. Results with the Fish Embryo Toxicity (FET) test confirmed lethal and sub-lethal effects, while acute effects were not detected with the Daphnia magna acute test. The fish-kills events probably can be generated by several factors as a consequence of an increasing human anthropization of the area with the contribution of different stressors together with chemical releases and emissions. This study shows that in multiple stressor scenarios characterized by heavy rainfall, droughts, and strong anthropogenic pressures, the application of EBMs, chemical analysis, and fish assemblage examinations can represent a useful support in the investigation of the causes of extensive fish-kills events

    World Health Organization Grade II/III Glioma Molecular Status: Prediction by MRI Morphologic Features and Apparent Diffusion Coefficient

    BACKGROUND: A readily implemented MRI biomarker for glioma genotyping is currently lacking. PURPOSE: To evaluate clinically available MRI parameters for predicting isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) status in patients with glioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study of patients studied from July 2008 to February 2019, untreated World Health Organization (WHO) grade II/III gliomas were analyzed by three neuroradiologists blinded to tissue results. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) minimum (ADC_{mi}) and mean (ADC_{mean}) regions of interest were defined in tumor and normal appearing white matter (ADC_{NAWM}). visual rating of anatomic features (T1 weighted, T1 weighted with contrast enhancement, T2 weighted, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) was performed. Interobserver comparison (intraclass correlation coefficient and Cohen κ) was followed by nonparametric (Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance) testing of associations between ADC metrics and glioma genotypes, including Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Descriptors with sufficient concordance (intraclass correlation coefficient, >0.8; κ > 0.6) underwent univariable analysis. Predictive variables (P < .05) were entered into a multivariable logistic regression and tested in an additional test sample of patients with glioma. RESULTS: he study included 290 patients (median age, 40 years; interquartile range, 33–52 years; 169 male patients) with 82 IDH wild-type, 107 IDH mutant/1p19q intact, and 101 IDH mutant/1p19q codeleted gliomas. Two predictive models incorporating ADC_{mean}-to-ADC_{NAWM} ratio, age, and morphologic characteristics, with model A mandating calcification result and model B recording cyst formation, classified tumor type with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.94 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.91, 0.97) and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.93, 0.98), respectively. In the test sample of 49 gliomas (nine IDH wild type, 21 IDH mutant/1p19q intact, and 19 IDH mutant/1p19q codeleted), the classification accuracy was 40 of 49 gliomas (82%; 95% CI: 71%, 92%) for model A and 42 of 49 gliomas (86%; 95% CI: 76%, 96%) for model B. CONCLUSION: Two algorithms that incorporated apparent diffusion coefficient values, age, and tumor morphologic characteristics predicted isocitrate dehydrogenase status in World Health Organization grade II/III gliomas on the basis of standard clinical MRI sequences alone

    Strong and Tunable Nonlinear Optomechanical Coupling in a Low-Loss System

    A major goal in optomechanics is to observe and control quantum behavior in a system consisting of a mechanical resonator coupled to an optical cavity. Work towards this goal has focused on increasing the strength of the coupling between the mechanical and optical degrees of freedom; however, the form of this coupling is crucial in determining which phenomena can be observed in such a system. Here we demonstrate that avoided crossings in the spectrum of an optical cavity containing a flexible dielectric membrane allow us to realize several different forms of the optomechanical coupling. These include cavity detunings that are (to lowest order) linear, quadratic, or quartic in the membrane's displacement, and a cavity finesse that is linear in (or independent of) the membrane's displacement. All these couplings are realized in a single device with extremely low optical loss and can be tuned over a wide range in situ; in particular, we find that the quadratic coupling can be increased three orders of magnitude beyond previous devices. As a result of these advances, the device presented here should be capable of demonstrating the quantization of the membrane's mechanical energy.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Continuous Variable Quantum Cryptography using Two-Way Quantum Communication

    Quantum cryptography has been recently extended to continuous variable systems, e.g., the bosonic modes of the electromagnetic field. In particular, several cryptographic protocols have been proposed and experimentally implemented using bosonic modes with Gaussian statistics. Such protocols have shown the possibility of reaching very high secret-key rates, even in the presence of strong losses in the quantum communication channel. Despite this robustness to loss, their security can be affected by more general attacks where extra Gaussian noise is introduced by the eavesdropper. In this general scenario we show a "hardware solution" for enhancing the security thresholds of these protocols. This is possible by extending them to a two-way quantum communication where subsequent uses of the quantum channel are suitably combined. In the resulting two-way schemes, one of the honest parties assists the secret encoding of the other with the chance of a non-trivial superadditive enhancement of the security thresholds.     The Hubbard model within the equations of motion approach

    The Hubbard model has a special role in Condensed Matter Theory as it is considered as the simplest Hamiltonian model one can write in order to describe anomalous physical properties of some class of real materials. Unfortunately, this model is not exactly solved except for some limits and therefore one should resort to analytical methods, like the Equations of Motion Approach, or to numerical techniques in order to attain a description of its relevant features in the whole range of physical parameters (interaction, filling and temperature). In this manuscript, the Composite Operator Method, which exploits the above mentioned analytical technique, is presented and systematically applied in order to get information about the behavior of all relevant properties of the model (local, thermodynamic, single- and two- particle ones) in comparison with many other analytical techniques, the above cited known limits and numerical simulations. Within this approach, the Hubbard model is shown to be also capable to describe some anomalous behaviors of the cuprate superconductors.Comment: 232 pages, more than 300 figures, more than 500 reference

    Exploring corrections to the optomechanical Hamiltonian

    We compare two approaches for deriving corrections to the “linear model” of cavity optomechanics, in order to describe effects that are beyond first order in the radiation pressure coupling. In the regime where the mechanical frequency is much lower than the cavity one, we compare: (I) a widely used phenomenological Hamiltonian conserving the photon number; (II) a two-mode truncation of C. K. Law’s microscopic model, which we take as the “true” system Hamiltonian. While these approaches agree at first order, the latter model does not conserve the photon number, resulting in challenging computations. We find that approach (I) allows for several analytical predictions, and significantly outperforms the linear model in our numerical examples. Yet, we also find that the phenomenological Hamiltonian cannot fully capture all high-order corrections arising from the C. K. Law model

    A randomized controlled trial of a decision aid for women considering genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer risk

    PURPOSE: To measure the effectiveness of a tailored decision aid (DA) designed to help women make informed decisions about genetic testing for breast/ovarian cancer risk. METHODS: A total of 145 women were randomized to receive the DA or a control pamphlet at the end of their first genetic counseling consultation. Of these, 120 (82.8%) completed two questionnaires, 1 week and 6 months post-consultation. RESULTS: While the DA had no effect on informed choice, post-decisional regret or actual genetic testing decision, the trial showed that women who received the DA had higher knowledge levels and felt more informed about genetic testing than women who received the control pamphlet (chi(2)(2) = 6.82; P = 0.033; chi(2)(1) = 4.86; P = 0.028 respectively). The DA also helped women who did not have blood drawn at their first consultation to clarify their values with regards to genetic testing (chi(2)(1) = 5.27; P = 0.022). Women who received the DA were less likely to share the information with other family members than women in the control condition (chi(2)(1) = 8.78; P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Decision aids are an effective decision-support strategy for women considering genetic testing for breast/ovarian cancer risk, and are most effective before the patient has made a decision, which is generally at the point of having blood drawn

    Renal cell carcinoma metastasis to the ciliary body responds to proton beam radiotherapy: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>We report an unexpected presentation of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the ciliary body and an interesting response to proton beam radiotherapy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We encountered a case of angle-closure glaucoma as the initial presentation of ocular metastasis to the ciliary body in a 65-year-old Caucasian man who had undergone right radical nephrectomy for RCC 15 years earlier. He underwent YAG (yttrium aluminium garnet) laser peripheral iridotomy while further metastatic workup took place. His condition was eventually diagnosed as stage IV metastatic RCC of the clear cell type and involved multiple sites, including the ciliary body, brain, lungs, liver, and pancreas. The progression of RCC metastasis to the ciliary body was studied for 16 months. The ciliary body mass continued to grow despite systemic treatment with temsirolimus and interleukin-2 and intravitreal injections of bevacizumab. The tumor size peaked at 6.11 Ă— 6.06 mm before the start of proton therapy, which reduced the tumor size to 5.07 Ă— 4.39 mm.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>RCC can produce metastases involving unusual sites many years after resection of the primary tumor. Proton therapy was found to be effective in treating RCC metastasis to the ciliary body in settings in which other treatment modalities failed.</p

    Antioxidant activity and polyphenols from seaweed and Halimeda Halimeda Opuntia monile

    En este trabajo se estudió la actividad antioxidante de dos especies de algas marinas (H. opuntia y H. monile) mediante el ensayo de atrapamiento de radicales DPPH• y el sistema β-Caroteno-acido linoleico. Adicionalmente a las fracciones de ácidos fenolicos libres, ésteres solubles y ésteres insolubles de ácidos fenólicos se les determinó el contenido en fenoles totales mediante la técnica de Folin-Ciocalteu y posteriormente se identificaron y cuantificaron 8 ácidos fenólicos y cinámicos, resultando el componente mayoritario el ácido salicílico. En los ensayos utilizados se obtuvieron valores altos de actividad antioxidante para las diferentes fracciones. A partir de estos resultados se puede postular que la actividad antioxidante de los extractos polares de estas algas pudiera ser explicada, al menos parcialmente, por la presencia de los ácidos fenólicos y cinámicos. En el caso del alga Halimeda monile, de acuerdo con la literatura consultada, es el primer reporte de la actividad antioxidanteIn this paper, the antioxidant activity displayed by two different green seaweed species (H. opuntia y H. monile) was studied using the β- carotene/ linoleic acid and the DPPH• scavenging.systems as different experimental in vitro antioxidant assessment models. Polar seaweed fractions containing free phenolic acids, soluble esters and insoluble esters of phenolic acids were chemically characterized in terms of their phenolic content and composition. In that direction, 8 phenolic acids were identified and quantified, and salycilic acid was shown to be the majoritary compound on the fractions from both species. In addition, the polar fractions were proved to exert antioxidant activity in the two used experimental systems with considerably low values of CI50. Thus, in view of these findings, the antioxidant activity of these polar Halimeda spp. extracts could be supported and at least partially related to the presence of phenolic acids. In case of Halimeda monile this is, at least to the extend of our knowledge, the first report of such biological activity
