Sucrosomial Iron Supplementation for the Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients Refractory to Oral Iron Treatment

Malaltia inflamatòria intestinal; Deficiència de ferro; Suplementació de ferroEnfermedad inflamatoria intestinal; Deficiencia de hierro; Suplementación con hierroInflammatory bowel disease; Iron deficiency; Iron supplementationIron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common manifestation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Oral iron supplements are the treatment of choice, but are not always well tolerated. Sucrosomial® iron (SI) may represent an alternative. This prospective study assessed the tolerability and effectiveness of SI, and quality of life (QoL) of IDA-IBD patients who were intolerant to oral iron salts. The study included 52 individuals treated with 1 capsule/day for 12 weeks. Tolerability was assessed through a gastrointestinal symptom severity questionnaire. Hemoglobin (Hb) levels and clinical symptoms of IDA were analyzed. QoL was assessed using IBDQ-9 and EuroQoL questionnaires. The percentage of patients with excellent/good health increased from 42.9% to 94.3%. Mean Hb concentration significantly increased at all follow-up visits (p < 0.05). Almost all participants (96.9%) were adherent to the study medication. Patients’ QoL improved (IBDQ-9: from 60.9 to 65.5). Patients also improved in mobility (71.8% to 78.1%), usual activities (51.3% to 68.7%), pain/discomfort (41.0% to 53.1%), and extreme depression/anxiety problems (7.7% to 3.2%); they worsened in self-care (100% to 90.6%), but perceived an enhancement in their global health [EQ-VAS score: 61.9 (±26.1) to 66.9 (±20.3)]. SI was well tolerated and improved IDA symptoms, IBD activity, and patients’ QoL. In conclusion, SI should be considered in IDA–IBD patients. The authors of this manuscript received financial support from ZAMBON S.A.U. for the writing of the manuscript. Contrasting catastrophic eruptions predicted by different intrusion and collapse scenarios

    Get PDF
Catastrophic volcanic eruptions triggered by landslide collapses can jet upwards or blast sideways. Magma intrusion is related to both landslide-triggered eruptive scenarios (lateral or vertical), but it is not clear how such different responses are produced, nor if any precursor can be used for forecasting them. We approach this problem with physical analogue modelling enhanced with X-ray Multiple Detector Computed Tomography scanning, used to track evolution of internal intrusion, and its related faulting and surface deformation. We find that intrusions produce three different volcano deformation patterns, one of them involving asymmetric intrusion and deformation, with the early development of a listric slump fault producing pronounced slippage of one sector. This previously undescribed early deep potential slip surface provides a unified explanation for the two different eruptive scenarios (lateral vs. vertical). Lateral blast only occurs in flank collapse when the intrusion has risen into the sliding block. Otherwise, vertical rather than lateral expansion of magma is promoted by summit dilatation and flank buttressing. The distinctive surface deformation evolution detected opens the possibility to forecast the possible eruptive scenarios: laterally directed blast should only be expected when surface deformation begins to develop oblique to the first major fault

The millet route: understanding a cultural landscape: reactivation strategies for the cultural landscape of Dogon country, Mali

The present study proposes to demonstrate the following hypothesis: there are unique tools, such as Cultural routes and Local Development Planning, which can be used to reactivate a region and that allow both local and touristic activities to coexist without endangering local identity and heritage. The study of these societies, their connection with their own heritage, and their adaptation to the landscape can provide an essential perspective that may help redefine the way we interact with our surroundings. The main goal of this investigation is to come closer to a better understanding of Landscape, Tangible and Intangible Heritage, essential principals and values of Moptis Region in Dogon Country. Fundamentally, to achieve a criteria matrix that supports the articulation of any proposal to the place. We proposed as an instrument of territorial management and organisation, a cultural route with the name Millet Route, and intendeds minimal interference to achieve maximum benefit.Peer Reviewe
