DMRG study of the Bond Alternating \textbf{S}=1/2 Heisenberg ladder with Ferro-Antiferromagnetic couplings
We obtain the phase diagram in the parameter space and an
accurate estimate of the critical line separating the different phases. We show
several measuments of the magnetization, dimerization, nearest neighbours
correlation, and density of energy in the different zones of the phase diagram,
as well as a measurement of the string order parameter proposed as the non
vanishing phase order parameter characterizing Haldane phases. All these
results will be compared in the limit with the behaviour of the
Bond Alternated Heisenberg Chain (BAHC). The analysis of our
data supports the existence of a dimer phase separated by a critical line from
a Haldane one, which has exactly the same nature as the Haldane phase in the
BAHC.Comment: Version 4. 8 pages, 15 figures (12 figures in document
Bifurcations in the theory of current transfer to cathodes of dc discharges and observations of transitions between different modes
General scenarios of transitions between different spot patterns on
electrodes of dc gas discharges and their relation to bifurcations of
steady-state solutions are analyzed. In the case of cathodes of arc discharges,
it is shown that any transition between different modes of current transfer is
related to a bifurcation of steady-state solutions. In particular, transitions
between diffuse and spot modes on axially symmetric cathodes, frequently
observed in the experiment, represent an indication of the presence of
pitchfork or fold bifurcations of steady-state solutions. Experimental
observations of transitions on cathodes of dc glow microdischarges are analyzed
and those potentially related to bifurcations of steady-state solutions are
identified. The relevant bifurcations are investigated numerically and the
computed patterns are found to conform to those observed in the course of the
corresponding transitions in the experiment
Neutral heavy lepton production at next high energy linear colliders
The discovery potential for detecting new heavy Majorana and Dirac neutrinos
at some recently proposed high energy colliders is discussed. These
new particles are suggested by grand unified theories and superstring-inspired
models. For these models the production of a single heavy neutrino is shown to
be more relevant than pair production when comparing cross sections and
neutrino mass ranges.
The process is calculated
including on-shell and off-shell heavy neutrino effects.
We present a detailed study of cross sections and distributions that shows a
clear separation between the signal and standard model contributions, even
after including hadronization effects.Comment: 4 pages including 15 figures, 1 table. RevTex. Accepted in Physical

Critical Lines and Massive Phases in Quantum Spin Ladders with Dimerization
We determine the existence of critical lines in dimerized quantum spin
ladders in their phase diagram of coupling constants using the finite-size DMRG
algorithm. We consider both staggered and columnar dimerization patterns, and
antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-leg couplings. The existence of
critical phases depends on the precise combination of these patterns. The
nature of the massive phases separating the critical lines are characterized
with generalized string order parameters that determine their valence bond
solid (VBS) content.Comment: 9 pages 10 figure
FAdo and GUItar: tools for automata manipulation and visualization
Abstract. FAdo is an ongoing project which aims to provide a set of tools for symbolic manipulation of formal languages. To allow highlevel programming with complex data structures, easy prototyping of algorithms, and portability (to use in computer grid systems for example), are its main features. Our main motivation is the theoretical and experimental research, but we have also in mind the construction of a pedagogical tool for teaching automata theory and formal languages. For the graphical visualization and interactive manipulation a new interface application, GUItar, is being developed. In this paper, we describe the main components of the FAdo system as well as the basics of the graphical interface and editor, the export/import filters and its generic interface with external systems, such as FAdo.
Significance of Ghost Orbit Bifurcations in Semiclassical Spectra
Gutzwiller's trace formula for the semiclassical density of states in a
chaotic system diverges near bifurcations of periodic orbits, where it must be
replaced with uniform approximations. It is well known that, when applying
these approximations, complex predecessors of orbits created in the bifurcation
("ghost orbits") can produce pronounced signatures in the semiclassical spectra
in the vicinity of the bifurcation. It is the purpose of this paper to
demonstrate that these ghost orbits themselves can undergo bifurcations,
resulting in complex, nongeneric bifurcation scenarios. We do so by studying an
example taken from the Diamagnetic Kepler Problem, viz. the period quadrupling
of the balloon orbit. By application of normal form theory we construct an
analytic description of the complete bifurcation scenario, which is then used
to calculate the pertinent uniform approximation. The ghost orbit bifurcation
turns out to produce signatures in the semiclassical spectrum in much the same
way as a bifurcation of real orbits would.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, LATEX (IOP style), submitted to J. Phys.
