Fractional Euler-Lagrange differential equations via Caputo derivatives
We review some recent results of the fractional variational calculus.
Necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type for functionals with a
Lagrangian containing left and right Caputo derivatives are given. Several
problems are considered: with fixed or free boundary conditions, and in
presence of integral constraints that also depend on Caputo derivatives.Comment: This is a preprint of a paper whose final and definite form will

Diluted antiferromagnet in a ferromagnetic enviroment
The question of robustness of a network under random ``attacks'' is treated
in the framework of critical phenomena. The persistence of spontaneous
magnetization of a ferromagnetic system to the random inclusion of
antiferromagnetic interactions is investigated. After examing the static
properties of the quenched version (in respect to the random antiferromagnetic
interactions) of the model, the persistence of the magnetization is analysed
also in the annealed approximation, and the difference in the results are
discussed
Traumatic Neuroma Following Sagittal Split Osteotomy of the Mandible
A 16-year-old male underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy of the mandible to correct a mandibular deficiency. Twenty-one years later, a routine panoramic radiograph revealed a radiolucent lesion on the left side of the mandible. The lesion was biopsied. As the patient did not have symptoms and the lesion was connected to the inferior alveolar nerve, the lesion was not totally excised in order to preserve nerve function. The histological features were consistent with traumatic neuroma, and no further surgical procedure was planned
Cosmology in the Universe with distance dependent Lorentz-violating bakground
We consider a cosmological setup with the inflaton field in the presence of a
redshift dependent Lorentz-violating time-like background to address the
inflationary regime and other phases of the Universe. We also show that the
regime of dark energy at large distances (low redshifts) is essentially
dominated by the presence of the Lorentz-violating background.Comment: 8 pages, no figure, Latex, to appear in AHE
Alternate islands of multiple isochronous chains in wave-particle interactions
We analyze the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving in a uniform
magnetic field and perturbed by a standing electrostatic wave. We show that a
pulsed wave produces an infinite number of perturbative terms with the same
winding number, which may generate islands in the same region of phase space.
As a consequence, the number of isochronous island chains varies as a function
of the wave parameters. We observe that in all the resonances, the number of
chains is related to the amplitude of the various resonant terms. We determine
analytically the position of the periodic points and the number of island
chains as a function of the wave number and wave period. Such information is
very important when one is concerned with regular particle acceleration, since
it is necessary to adjust the initial conditions of the particle to obtain the
maximum acceleration.Comment: Submitte
Physical properties of the Schur complement of local covariance matrices
General properties of global covariance matrices representing bipartite
Gaussian states can be decomposed into properties of local covariance matrices
and their Schur complements. We demonstrate that given a bipartite Gaussian
state described by a covariance matrix \textbf{V}, the
Schur complement of a local covariance submatrix of it can be
interpreted as a new covariance matrix representing a Gaussian operator of
party 1 conditioned to local parity measurements on party 2. The connection
with a partial parity measurement over a bipartite quantum state and the
determination of the reduced Wigner function is given and an operational
process of parity measurement is developed. Generalization of this procedure to
a -partite Gaussian state is given and it is demonstrated that the
system state conditioned to a partial parity projection is given by a
covariance matrix such as its block elements are Schur complements
of special local matrices.Comment: 10 pages. Replaced with final published versio
