Do Expenditures for Student Support Services Lead to Demonstrable Gains in Student Achievement?
Wood, Allemand, Anderson, and Cheslock present a brief overview and analysis of the article, Relationship between types of school district expenditures and student performance, originally published in Applied Economics Letters. The authors present a summary of the key components of the article including the introduction, method and results of the study. They offer an additional analysis of implications for future practice, including a discussion of legislation and the conflicting evidence that school counseling and support services benefit students in academic and social competencies, as well as evidence that the cost seems to outweigh the benefits
Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy: epileptic and paretic outcome at one year of age
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The issue concerning neurologic outcome in patients with perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (H.I.E) has inspired many studies which tried to identify adequate prognostic factors. Our work aims to find among neonatal parameters:</p> <p indent="1">- factors which help to predict the risk to develop both Cerebral Palsy (CP) and secondary Epilepsy at one year of age in subjects affected by perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy,</p> <p indent="1">- correlations between the neonatal parameters and the variable severity of above mentioned sequelae.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have recruited 32 subjects, whose history and neuroimages suggested a perinatal H.I.E and we have retrospectively analysed clinical-instrumental parameters at birth and at one year of age.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At one year cut-off, 9 patients developed both secondary epilepsy and CP (28%), whereas the other subjects showed only motor delay (31%), only secondary epilepsy (3%) or only CP (38%). Patients with both the severest sequelae were essentially term infants (only 2/9 were pre-term infants), with normal weight (only 3 LBW) and 7 of them with early pathologic EEG and neuroimages pointing out cortex injuries (typical of term infants). A statistic analysis showed the following correlations: birth weight and global prognosis (χ2 = 14,03; p = 0,04); neonatal clinical pattern and CP's severity (χ2 = 14,03; p = 0,0009); early EEG and CP's severity (χ2 = 4,32; p = 0,04); epileptic onset age and CP and Epilepsy's severity (F = 16,01; p = 0,005).</p> <p>Birth weight represented a predictive factor of early neurological outcome (<1,5 kg birth weight neonates are not at risk of both epilepsy and CP); neonatal clinical pattern and early EEG were correlated with variable severity of CP; an epileptic exordium in the first 6 months led up to a more severe epileptic and paretic outcome.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From a clinical point of view it is of crucial importance to have some parameters which enable to discriminate patients at risk of more severe sequelae from those at risk of moderate severity outcome.</p
Derivation of a two-fluids model for a Bose gas from a quantum kinetic system
We formally derive the hydrodynamic limit of a system modelling a bosons gas
having a condensed part, made of a quantum kinetic and a Gross-Pitaevskii
equation. The limit model, which is a two-fluids Euler system, is approximated
by an isentropic system, which is then studied. We find in particular some
conditions for the hyperbolicity, and we study the weak solutions. A numerical
example is given at the end.Comment: 29 page

A rationale and suggestions for including sound symbolic expressive vocabulary in university-level Japanese language classroom instruction
textThe Japanese language is unusually rich in a variety of sound symbolic words.
Sound imitation is used to reflect physical, audible noises relating to the actions or
movements of people, animals, and things. Such words are also used to express
imitation of manner to portray feelings and figurative meanings. These expressions
are found in a wide variety of contexts, ranging from classical literature to daily
conversation, to manga (the trendy comic books read extensively by virtually every
age group in Japan). Sound symbolic vocabulary adds a vividness and flair to the
Japanese language, making it colorful, creative, and psychologically expressive.
These words have common structural features and syntactic functions that make them
readily identifiable (though, perhaps, not at a conscious level for the native speaker)
as a lexical group. And yet, despite their undeniable presence in all areas of language
use, sound symbolic words have been virtually ignored in Japanese language
textbooks and classroom instruction. They continue to represent, to outsiders, at
least, one of the most elusive and least understood aspects of the Japanese language.
In this dissertation, I frame my discussion of characteristics of sound symbolic
vocabulary by first reviewing the literature on Japanese sound symbolic vocabulary
and on vocabulary acquisition in L1 and L2. I then discuss the results of interviews
with textbook authors and language educators concerning the teaching of sound
symbolic words. Although they expressed some divergent views, for the most part
they agreed that these words do play an important role and should be introduced to
students in manageable increments, at a point when students have acquired enough
knowledge to make learning meaningful. Imagery-based pictorial, verbal, and
contextual responses to 100 sound symbolic words given by 50 Japanese native
speakers are presented. I then provide suggestions for classroom instruction of sound
symbolic vocabulary based on a constructivist model using metalinguistic previews
and imagery-based elaboration strategies, offering a sample “snapshot” lesson.
Ramifications of this dissertation should help students increase their knowledge of
and ability to communicate using real-life Japanese, greatly expand their word power,
and make significant progress to greater language proficiency.Curriculum and Instructio
This article examines the value creation related to CEO departures in the context of poor performing French corporations. The empirical tests conducted on a sample of 160 firms listed on the Paris stock exchange whose CEOs were replaced between 1996 and 2004 give evidence of the positive effect of these departures on firm performance when the successor is an outsider or when firms are controlled. Additional factors should ultimately be analyzed to better understand in which cases CEO departures in the context of poor performance involve value creation.gouvernance des entreprises;départs des dirigeants;performance;corporate governance; CEO departures.
