Corn Residue Harvesting Effects on Yield Response to N Fertilization
Producers have many choices of diverse tillage practices for their corn (Zea mays L.) production systems. However, no-till has become an important soil management practice to help reduce water and wind erosion, as well as nutrient runoff, while conserving soil moisture for crop use. No-till systems also help farmers by saving labor and time, as well as reducing farm costs due to less equipment and fuel consumption. Nevertheless, no-till production is typically more successful and has higher crop yield on moderately to well drained medium-textured soils (Bitzer, 1998), compared to soils with poor internal drainage and high clay
Partnership working between UK and Oman to enhance mental health nursing education and practice
It is becoming increasing acknowledged that we live and work in a global economy where cultural, educational and health ideologies are suggested to collide. Working together to address global mental health is key to improving health and strengthening health care systems (APPG 2014, Prince et al. 2007). Inequalities in finance, employment, accommodation, nutrition, education, access to healthcare can be seen throughout the world (WHO 2015). Within this melee mental health issues are subjugated in an attempt to disassociate with its lingering stigma (WHO 2013).
Regardless of the attempt to hide the ‘shame’ of mental ill health there are many throughout the world attempting to develop innovative and caring practices to enable people experiencing mental health problems to gain recovery and a good quality of life (WHO 2013). Over the past year we have been developing a mental health nursing education partnership between Cardiff University and Oman Specialised Nursing Institute. A shared belief of students as partners in learning has enabled the working relationships to promote standards and quality (QAA 2014).
We have developed a shared understanding of mental health nursing based on the principles of recovery and person centre care and used a number of educational approaches to influence mental health nursing practice. No health without mental health (2011), Mental health measures (2010), Oman’s Health Vision 2050 (Ministry of Health 2014) and the World Health Organisations Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 (WHO 2013) provides a platform for collaborative working.
In this presentation we will share our experiences of our partnership working and programme development (both undergraduate and post graduate) along with our blended teaching methods. In addition to the academic achievements of our students we have found partnership working has enabled a greater personal and cultural awareness for ourselves as lecturers and for our student
Epidemiological and nutrition transition in developing countries: impact on human health and development
Whereas common infectious and parasitic diseases such as malaria and the HIV/AIDS pandemic remain major unresolved health problems in many developing countries, emerging non-communicable diseases relating to diet and lifestyle have been increasing over the last two decades, thus creating a double burden of disease and impacting negatively on already over-stretched health services in these countries. Prevalence rates for type 2 diabetes mellitus and CVD in sub-Saharan Africa have seen a 10-fold increase in the last 20 years. In the Arab Gulf current prevalence rates are between 25 and 35% for the adult population, whilst evidence of the metabolic syndrome is emerging in children and adolescents. The present review focuses on the concept of the epidemiological and nutritional transition. It looks at historical trends in socio-economic status and lifestyle and trends in nutrition-related non-communicable diseases over the last two decades, particularly in developing countries with rising income levels, as well as the other extreme of poverty, chronic hunger and coping strategies and metabolic adaptations in fetal life that predispose to non-communicable disease risk in later life. The role of preventable environmental risk factors for obesity and the metabolic syndrome in developing countries is emphasized and also these challenges are related to meeting the millennium development goals. The possible implications of these changing trends for human and economic development in poorly-resourced healthcare settings and the implications for nutrition training are also discussed
Radiative capture and electromagnetic dissociation involving loosely bound nuclei: the B example
Electromagnetic processes in loosely bound nuclei are investigated using an
analytical model. In particular, electromagnetic dissociation of B is
studied and the results of our analytical model are compared to numerical
calculations based on a three-body picture of the B bound state. The
calculation of energy spectra is shown to be strongly model dependent. This is
demonstrated by investigating the sensitivity to the rms intercluster distance,
the few-body behavior, and the effects of final state interaction. In contrast,
the fraction of the energy spectrum which can be attributed to E1 transitions
is found to be almost model independent at small relative energies. This
finding is of great importance for astrophysical applications as it provides us
with a new tool to extract the E1 component from measured energy spectra. An
additional, and independent, method is also proposed as it is demonstrated how
two sets of experimental data, obtained with different beam energy and/or
minimum impact parameter, can be used to extract the E1 component.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C. 10 pages, 7 figure
Exposure to Uteroplacental Insufficiency Reduces the Expression of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 and Proopiomelanocortin in the Hypothalamus of Newborn Rats
IUGR has been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes. Recent data suggest that some of the molecular defects underlying type 2 diabetes reside in the CNS. Disruption of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in the hypothalamic neurons expressing leptin receptor, results in severe obesity, hyperglycaemia, and hyperinsulinemia. Our aim was to investigate the expression of STAT3 and its downstream effector proopiomelanocortin (POMC) in IUGR rats obtained by uterine artery ligation. On day 19 of gestation, time-dated Sprague-Dawley pregnant rats were anesthetized, and both the uterine arteries were ligated. At birth, hypothalamus was dissected and processed to evaluate the expression of STAT3, its phosphorylated form, and POMC. STAT3 mRNA, STAT3 protein, phosphorylated STAT3, POW mRNA, and POMC protein were significantly reduced in IUGR versus sham animals (p < 0.0001. p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, p < 0.01, p < 0.01 respectively). No significant differences either in serum leptin concentrations or in hypothalamic leptin receptor expression were observed. Our results suggest that an abnormal intrauterine milieu call affect the hypothalamic expression of STAT3 and POW at birth. altering the hypothalamic signaling pathways that regulate the energy homeostasis. Carbon isotope signatures from land snail shells: Implications for palaeovegetation reconstruction in the eastern Mediterranean
In this studywecompare carbon isotope values inmodern Helix melanostoma shell carbonate (d13Cshell) from the Gebel al-Akhdar region of Libya with carbon isotope values in H. melanostomabody tissue (d13Cbody), local vegetation (d13Cplant) and soil (d13Csoil). All vegetation in the study area followed the C3 photosynthetic pathway. However, the d13Cplant values of different species formed two distinct isotopic groups. This can be best explained by different water use efficiencies with arid adapted species having significantly more positive d13Cplant values than less water efficient species. The ranges and means of d13Cbody and d13Cplant were statistically indistinguishable from one another suggesting that d13Cbody was primarily a function of local vegetation composition. H. melanostoma d13Cshell reflected the d13Cplant of local vegetation with a positive offset between body/diet and shell of 14.5± 1.4‰. Therefore, in the Gebel al-Akhdar where only C3 plants are present, highermeand13C shell values likely reflect greater abundances ofwater-efficientC3 plants in the snails diet and therefore in the landscape, whilst lower mean d13Cshell values likely reflect the consumption of less water-efficient C3 plants. The distribution of these plants is in turn affected by environmental factors such as rainfall. These findings can be applied to archaeological and geological shell deposits to reconstruct late Pleistocene to Holocene vegetation change in the southeast Mediterranean
