    Mangroves, garbage, fishing: Bringing everyday ecology to Sydney's industrial Georges River

    Post war problems of rising urban, industrial pollution and intractable waste disposal are usually considered as technical and economic problems only, solutions to which were led by experts at State level, and filtered into Australia from the ferments occurring in the United States and Britain in the 1960s and 70s. This paper investigates the change which arose from the localities in which the impact of those effects of modern city development were occurring. In particular, this study looks at a working class, industrial area, the Georges River near Bankstown Municipality, which was severely affected by Sydneys post-war expansion. Here, action to address urgent environmental problems was initiated first at the local level, and only later were professional engineers and public health officials involved in seeking remedies. It was even later that these local experts turned from engineering strategies to environmental science, embracing the newly developed ecological analyses to craft changing approaches to local problems. This paper centres on the perspective of one local public health surveyor, employed by a local municipal council to oversee waste disposal, to identify the motives for his decisions to intervene dramatically in river health and waste disposal programs. Rather than being prompted to act by influences from higher political levels or overseas, this officer drew his motivation from careful local data collection, from local political agitation and from his own recreational knowledge of the river. It was his involvement with the living environments of the area the ways in which he knew the river - through personal and recreational experiences, which prompted him to seek out the new science and investigate emerging waste disposal technologies

    Waterborne: Vietnamese Australians and river environments in Vietnam and Sydney

    Vietnamese Australians who arrived in Australia as refugees since the 1970s and later as migrants, have developed complex relationships of remembering, knowing and belonging to environments in Vietnam and Sydney. Water was a frequent point of reference in our interviews with Vietnamese people in Sydney, and their relationships with water are used in this article to explore interviewees associations with places. The article focuses on cultural knowledge of environments, which people bring with them, such as their connections with rivers and oceans, central to both memories of place and the histories of Vietnam. These memories also change with return visits and experiences between these places. Vietnamese refugees experiences of escape and trauma coming across oceans from Vietnam also influence subsequent relationships with place. Finally, relationships with Sydney parks and urban waterways are explored by examining popular places for family and community get-togethers along Georges River, located near where many Sydney Vietnamese people live. These have become key places in making Sydney home for Vietnamese people.     This series arises from Parklands, Culture and Communities, a project which looks at how cultural diversity shapes people's understandings and use of the Georges River and green spaces in Sydney's south west. We focus on the experiences of four local communities (Aboriginal, Vietnamese, Arabic and Anglo Australians) and their relationships with the river, parks and each other. Culturally diverse uses and views have not often been recognised in Australia in park and green space management models, which tend to be based on Anglo-Celtic 'norms' about nature and recreation. UTS and the Office of Environment and Heritage supported this research because they have been interested in how the more diverse cultural knowledges held by Australians today might offer support for managing green spaces more effectively

    QT prolongation in the STREAM Stage 1 Trial

    BACKGROUND: STREAM (Standardized Treatment Regimen of Anti-TB Drugs for Patients with MDR-TB) Stage 1 demonstrated non-inferior efficacy of a shortened regimen (the Short regimen) for rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) compared to the contemporaneous WHO-recommended regimen. This regimen included moxifloxacin and clofazimine, known to cause QT prolongation, and severe prolongation was more common on the Short regimen. Here we investigate risk factors for QT prolongation with the Short regimen.METHODS: Data from patients prescribed the Short regimen (n = 282) were analysed to identify risk factors for severe QT prolongation (QT/QTcF ≥500 ms or ≥60 ms increase in QTcF from baseline).RESULTS: Of the 282 patients on the Short regimen, 94 (33.3%) developed severe QT prolongation: 31 QT/QTcF ≥500 ms; 92 experienced ≥60 ms QTcF increase from baseline. The median time to QT/QTcF ≥500 ms was 20 weeks (IQR 8-28), and the time to ≥60 ms increase from baseline was 18 weeks (IQR 8-28). Prolongation ≥500 ms was most frequent in patients from Mongolia (10/22, 45.5%) compared with 3.5-11.9% at other sites, P < 0.001. Higher baseline QTcF increased risk of prolongation to ≥500 ms (QTcF ≥400 ms: OR 5.99, 95% CI 2.04-17.62).CONCLUSION: One third of patients on the Short regimen developed severe QT prolongation. QT/QTcF ≥500 ms was more common in patients from Mongolia and in those with a higher baseline QTcF, which may have implications for implementation of treatment

    Investigation of the efficacy of the short regimen for rifampicin-resistant TB from the STREAM trial

    Background: The STREAM trial demonstrated that a 9–11-month “short” regimen had non-inferior efficacy and comparable safety to a 20+ month “long” regimen for the treatment of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis. Imbalance in the components of the composite primary outcome merited further investigation. / Methods: Firstly, the STREAM primary outcomes were mapped to alternatives in current use, including WHO programmatic outcome definitions and other recently proposed modifications for programmatic or research purposes. Secondly, the outcomes were re-classified according to the likelihood that it was a Failure or Relapse (FoR) event on a 5-point Likert scale: Definite, Probable, Possible, Unlikely, and Highly Unlikely. Sensitivity analyses were employed to explore the impact of informative censoring. The protocol-defined modified intention-to-treat (MITT) analysis population was used for all analyses. / Results: Cure on the short regimen ranged from 75.1 to 84.2% across five alternative outcomes. However, between-regimens results did not exceed 1.3% in favor of the long regimen (95% CI upper bound 10.1%), similar to the primary efficacy results from the trial. Considering only Definite or Probable FoR events, there was weak evidence of a higher risk of FoR in the short regimen, HR 2.19 (95%CI 0.90, 5.35), p = 0.076; considering only Definite FoR events, the evidence was stronger, HR 3.53 (95%CI 1.05, 11.87), p = 0.030. Cumulative number of grade 3–4 AEs was the strongest predictor of censoring. Considering a larger effect of informative censoring attenuated treatment differences, although 95% CI were very wide. / Conclusion: Five alternative outcome definitions gave similar overall results. The risk of failure or relapse (FoR) may be higher in the short regimen than in the long regimen, highlighting the importance of how loss to follow-up and other censoring is accounted for in analyses. The outcome of time to FoR should be considered as a primary outcome for future drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB treatment trials, provided sensitivity analyses exploring the impact of departures from independent censoring are also included

    Failure or relapse predictors for the STREAM Stage 1 short regimen for RR-TB

    BACKGROUND: STREAM (Standardised Treatment Regimens of Anti-tuberculosis drugs for Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis) Stage 1 demonstrated non-inferior efficacy of a short regimen for rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) compared to a long regimen as recommended by the WHO. The present paper analyses factors associated with a definite or probable failure or relapse (FoR) event in participants receiving the Short regimen.METHODS: This analysis is restricted to 253 participants allocated to the Short regimen and is based on the protocol-defined modified intention to treat (mITT) population. Multivariable Cox regression models were built using backwards elimination with an exit probability of P = 0.157, equivalent to the Akaike Information Criterion, to identify factors independently associated with a definite or probable FoR event.RESULTS: Four baseline factors were identified as being significantly associated with the risk of definite or probable FoR (male sex, a heavily positive baseline smear grade, HIV co-infection and the presence of costophrenic obliteration). There was evidence of association of culture positivity at Week 8 and FoR in a second model and Week 16 smear positivity, presence of diabetes and of smoking in a third model.CONCLUSION: The factors associated with FoR outcomes identified in this analysis should be considered when determining the optimal shortened treatment regimen

    Position paper: Open web-distributed integrated geographic modelling and simulation to enable broader participation and applications

    © 2020 The Authors Integrated geographic modelling and simulation is a computational means to improve understanding of the environment. With the development of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and web technologies, it is possible to conduct open, extensible integrated geographic modelling across a network in which resources can be accessed and integrated, and further distributed geographic simulations can be performed. This open web-distributed modelling and simulation approach is likely to enhance the use of existing resources and can attract diverse participants. With this approach, participants from different physical locations or domains of expertise can perform comprehensive modelling and simulation tasks collaboratively. This paper reviews past integrated modelling and simulation systems, highlighting the associated development challenges when moving to an open web-distributed system. A conceptual framework is proposed to introduce a roadmap from a system design perspective, with potential use cases provided. The four components of this conceptual framework - a set of standards, a resource sharing environment, a collaborative integrated modelling environment, and a distributed simulation environment - are also discussed in detail with the goal of advancing this emerging field

    Sex-specific association patterns in bonobos and chimpanzees reflect species differences in cooperation

    In several group-living species, individuals' social preferences are thought to be influenced by cooperation. For some societies with fission–fusion dynamics, sex-specific association patterns reflect sex differences in cooperation in within- and between-group contexts. In our study, we investigated this hypothesis further by comparing sex-specific association patterns in two closely related species, chimpanzees and bonobos, which differ in the level of between-group competition and in the degree to which sex and kinship influence dyadic cooperation. Here, we used long-term party composition data collected on five chimpanzee and two bonobo communities and assessed, for each individual of 10 years and older, the sex of its top associate and of all conspecifics with whom it associated more frequently than expected by chance. We found clear species differences in association patterns. While in all chimpanzee communities males and females associated more with same-sex partners, in bonobos males and females tended to associate preferentially with females, but the female association preference for other females is lower than in chimpanzees. Our results also show that, for bonobos (but not for chimpanzees), association patterns were predominantly driven by mother–offspring relationships. These species differences in association patterns reflect the high levels of male–male cooperation in chimpanzees and of mother–son cooperation in bonobos. Finally, female chimpanzees showed intense association with a few other females, and male chimpanzees showed more uniform association across males. In bonobos, the most differentiated associations were from males towards females. Chimpanzee male association patterns mirror fundamental human male social traits and, as in humans, may have evolved as a response to strong between-group competition. The lack of such a pattern in a closely related species with a lower degree of between-group competition further supports this notion
