Status of the MINOS experiment
I will present the status of the long baseline neutrino oscillation
experiment MINOS at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). I will
summarize the status of the detector and beam construction, the expected event
rates and sensitivity to physics. I will also comment on possible future plans
to improve the performance of the experiment.Comment: Invited talk at the Seventh International Workshop on Tau Lepton

The making and representation of Muslim identity in Britain: conversations with British Muslim elites
The common nomenclature of ethnicity, race and colour has been found wanting in theorising and dealing with the Muslim presence in Britain. This study of 24 prominent British Muslims - including political, policy and academic/intellectual ‘elite’ – explores the making and representation of Muslim identity in Britain. We explore this through three considerations: Muslimness as a ‘master status’; leadership and representation in relation to British Muslims; and the public performance of Muslimness during ‘key moments’
Neutrino Induced Charged Current 1 Production At Intermediate Energies
The charged current one pion production induced by from nucleons
and nuclei like C and O nuclei has been studied. The calculations
have been done for the incoherent and the coherent processes from nuclear
targets assuming the dominance model and take into account the effect
of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion of the nucleon and renormalization of
properties in a nuclear medium. The effect of final state interactions of pions
has been taken into account. The theoretical uncertainty in the total cross
sections due to various parameterizations of the weak transition form factors
used in literature has been studied. The numerical results for the total cross
sections are compared with the recent preliminary results from the MiniBooNE
collaboration on C and could be useful in analyzing future data from the
K2K collaboration.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
String inspired explanation for the super-acceleration of our universe
We investigate the effect of the bulk content in the general Gauss-Bonnet
braneworld on the evolution of the universe. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term
and the combination of the dark radiation and the matter content of the bulk
play a crucial role in the universe evolution. We show that our model can
describe the super-acceleration of our universe with the equation of state of
the effective dark energy in agreement with observations.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, references adde
Phase diagram of a two-dimensional system with anomalous liquid properties
Using Monte Carlo simulation techniques, we calculate the phase diagram for a
square shoulder-square well potential in two dimensions that has been
previously shown to exhibit liquid anomalies consistent with a metastable
liquid-liquid critical point. We consider the liquid, gas and five crystal
phases, and find that all the melting lines are first order, despite a small
range of metastability. One melting line exhibits a temperature maximum, as
well as a pressure maximum that implies inverse melting over a small range in
pressure.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure
Probing the gateway to superheavy nuclei in cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory
The cranked relativistic Hartree+Bogoliubov theory has been applied for a
systematic study of the nuclei around 254No, the heaviest nuclei for which
detailed spectroscopic data are available. The deformation, rotational
response, pairing correlations, quasi-particle and other properties of these
nuclei have been studied with different relativistic mean field (RMF)
parametrizations. For the first time, the quasi-particle spectra of odd
deformed nuclei have been calculated in a fully self-consistent way within the
framework of the RMF theory. The energies of the spherical subshells, from
which active deformed states of these nuclei emerge, are described with an
accuracy better than 0.5 MeV for most of the subshells with the NL1 and NL3
parametrizations. However, for a few subshells the discrepancy reach 0.7-1.0
MeV. The implications of these results for the study of superheavy nuclei are
discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of the Conference on Frontiers of

Modeling anisotropic and rate-dependent plasticity in short-fiber reinforced thermoplastics
In this study, an anisotropic viscoelastic-viscoplastic macro-mechanical model is presented for short-fiber reinforced thermoplastics (SFRT). In injection molding of SFRT, the fiber orientation is influenced by the flow velocity profile which varies throughout the mold. The flow-induced orientation in the microstructure leads to anisotropy in the mechanical response. In addition to the mechanical anisotropy, SFRTs show time dependent behavior because of the thermoplastic matrix. The developed model captures the effects of both material orientation and loading rate on the yield behavior. In this study, uniaxial tests are performed at different strain rates and material orientations with samplescutfrominjectionmoldedplaques. Theexperimentalresultsshowthattheeffects of loading rate and material orientation on the yield are decoupled. The presented model takes advantage of this observation to simplify material characterization. An implicit integration scheme is used for the numerical implementation of the model as a UMAT in ABAQUS. Multiple relaxation times are used in order to capture the nonlinear pre-yield regime. An efficient method for obtaining the model parameters for different modes is proposed. Experimental results are used for validation of the model and a good agreement is observed for the prediction of viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior
