Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) Motor is a type of single-phase induction motor which widely used and one of circuit to run the water pump. The water pump is needed in the irrigation of agricultural land. If the location of agricultural land is not supplied with electricity grid, then the Water Pump may be driven by solar modules. This paper describes a design of power electronics system that convert DC Power from Solar Panels into AC Power for supplying the PSC Motor. The idea of this paper is to look at the speed characteristics of PSC Motor from the effect of sunlight Irradiance. The system is simulated using MATLAB-Simulink R2015a. The system driver consist of Push Pull Converter and Full Bridge Inverter type. DC voltage of the solar panel is raised to 311 V using Push Pull Converter, then the voltage is converted into AC voltage using the full bridge inverter. PSC Motor models and solar module models are using the available models in the MATLAB-Simulink R2015a library. The Motor Capacitor models is using the Single Phase Asynchronous Machine models and Capacitor of 16 ÎĽF. The Motor parameters is using the parameters that have been proposed by Hrabovcova V. The solar Modules use the MEMC Singapore MEMC-M250ACA-20. In this research, the solar panel was given the sunlight Irradiance with 5 conditions, the condition is: Irradiance 1000 W/m2, 800 W/m2, 600 W/m2, 400 W/m2, and 200 W/m2. The effect of sunlight Irradiances shows the speed characteristics of PSC motor that follows logarithmic trendline

The current Perspective is written for personnel managers and MBA students, aiming to raise the awareness of work-life balance importance in the employee management policies. In the intersection of work and personal life, the work-life balance is the equilibrium between the two; more specifically, work-life balance explains the relationship and interaction between individual job and their private life. In the Perspective, we first introduce the concept and characteristics of work-life balance through relevant literature. We then argue the significance of incorporating work-life balance into employee management practices, as the concept of work-life balance helps managers appreciate individual differences and develop more human-oriented awareness in management. We encourage managers to adopt transformational leadership in their management, in which the concept of work-life balance should be embedded in the design and implementation of employee management policies. By giving more autonomy to the employees through the work-life balance policies and practices, employees are more likely to appreciate the work and make more contribution accordingly. Practitioner points are also recommended

Planting requires careful control of seed planting depth and uniform plant spacing which improves crop stand levels that produces more even plant emergence for good crop yield. A manually operated flute planter with fertilizer distributor was designed and constructed to plant grain crops. The machine’s field performance test for planting maize and guinea corn trials shows that the planter was able to plant  with adjustable furrow opening depth and seed spacing. Average field seed planting space by flute metering unit for maize was found to be 34 cm compared to the theoretical value of 32 cm while it was 64cm field spacing against the theoretical value of 60cm for guinea corn. Machine draft requirement was found to be 149.5N and average seed filling efficiency of the metering unit was  90% at machine speed of 1.82 km/h. The average machine planting capacity was 0.18ha/h and fertilizer distribution could be achieved for drilling alone and not for spot application which will require further work

Drawing from in-depth qualitative interviews (N=32), this article examines the impact of indigenous tribal marks on employment chances in southwest Nigeria. It employs indigenous standpoint theory to frame the argument around what constitutes stigma and in what context. The results of our thematic analysis indicate that tribally marked job applicants and employees face significant social rejection, stigmatization, and discrimination, and can suffer from severe mental illnesses and even suicidal ideation. We explain how these tribally marked individuals navigate the changing contours of tradition and modernity in Nigeria. Tribal marks, although once largely perceived as signals of beauty and high social status, are now increasingly viewed as a significant liability in the labor market. This paper makes a unique and original contribution to the study of stigma and employment discrimination by eschewing the prevailing Western ethnocentrism in the extant research and instead placing the indigenous standpoint at center stage

    Get PDF
background: healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. the aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods: This study adopted a four-phase delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was coprioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low-middle-income countries. Results: In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of 'single-use' consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low-middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion: This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high- and low-middle-income countries

Freedom and Flexibility: The Work-Family Balance of Single Female Entrepreneurs in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Purpose – Work-family research has mainly focused on nuclear families, neglecting other types of families, such as single self-employed parents. To what extent does the freedom and flexibility attached to being single and self-employed hinder or enhance single parents’ work family balance? Using role theory as a theoretical lens, this study examines single self-employed parents’ work-family balance. Methodology – Drawing on the accounts of 25 single self-employed parents in Nigeria, the article uses semi-structured interviews to examine how this group achieves work-family balance. Findings – We found that the freedom and flexibility associated with being single and self-employed form a double-edged sword that increases the spate of singlehood and intensifies commitments to work, altogether preventing the participants in the study from achieving work-family balance. The findings also indicate that singlehood and a lack of spousal support cause and exacerbate work-family imbalance for this group. The findings further indicate that the reconstruction of functions, and the recreation of the traditional masculine gender role overwhelm single self-employed women in their entrepreneurial activities, thereby causing a lack of time and the energy required to function well in a family role, thus creating imbalance between the different spheres of life. Research limitations – The extent to which the findings of this research can be generalised is constrained by the limited sample and scope of the research. Practical implications – While literature espouses freedom and flexibility as important ingredients needed to achieve work-family balance, this study shows that they enhance inter-role role conflict. The study suggests creation of private or family time, devoid of work or entrepreneurial engagements, for single female entrepreneurs. This will ensure quality time and energy for the family and for fresh relationship – all of which will impact business positively. Originality/value – Rather than enhancing work-family balance, the freedom and flexibility attached to being single and self-employed remain the main source of work-family imbalance for Nigerian single self-employed parents

The study assessed bank workers’ level of job security and also investigated the relationship between job security level and job performance among employees of the banks. The study adopted cross-sectional research design where primary and secondary data were sourced. Primary data were obtained through both quantitative and qualitative techniques of data collection while Secondary data were extracted from Annual Reports of the selected Banks. The sample consisted of 210 bank workers selected for questionnaire administration and 15 workers for In-depth Interviews (IDIs) especially those that have been working with the bank for the past three years. These comprised both permanent and contract workers. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics while qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The result showed that majority (58.7%) considered the level of their job security to be low while (41.3%) considered the level of their job security as high across the selected banks. However, bank by bank evaluations of low level of job security did not show any major differences as Stanbic-IBTC Bank reported (51.4%), Wema Bank (70%), and First Bank (51.4%). The findings also showed that workers, regardless of their perception and feelings of job loss reported increase in their performance. Hence, there existed no significant relationship between job security level and performance (χ2 = 0.75; p> 0.05). The paper concluded that declining job security level is inevitable in the banking industry because of reforms in the Nigeria banking sector. However, this did not lower workers’ performance, otherwise performance were enhanced. It then recommended the need for Nigerian banks to employ the required number of workers they are capable of providing for and put an enabling environment for workers to perform.

Performance analysis of a three-phase induction motor with double-triple winding layout

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper presents the performance of threephase induction motor with a stator winding comprising of a combination of double and triple layer arrangements in slots, here simply referred to as double-triple stator winding layouts. The proposed layout provides a three-phase induction motor with high torque density and greater efficiency than the conventional machine with double winding layout. Field analysis technique is used to show that this winding arrangement has improved harmonic content and the machine performance is computed using Finite Element Method (FEM). Saturation is accounted for in the computation of the inductances. A 1500 W conventional three-phase induction machine with 36 stator slots is first wound as a four-pole double layer and then as a four-pole double-triple layer for the experimental study. Both windings are chorded with one slot with same number of turns per phase and use the same squirrel cage rotor

Performance and Emissions Analysis of N-Butanol Blended with Gasoline in Spark Ignition Engine

The power developed by an internal-combustion engine depends upon the fuel used for combustion. Fuels commonly used in internal combustion engines are derived from crude oil, which are depleting and are important sources of air pollution. In this study, n-butanol was used as an additive with gasoline as fuel in spark ignition engine. N-butanol exhibits good burning characteristics, contain oxygen, reduces some exhaust emissions and as well, has energy density and octane rating close to that of gasoline. The various blend rates (4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 percent by volume) were used in the engine performance analysis using a TD110-115 single cylinder, four-stroke air-cooled spark ignition engine test rig, under different loading conditions. An SV-5Q automobile exhausts gas analyzer was used to measure the concentration of gaseous emissions such as unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) from the engine tail pipe. The results of engine performance showed reduction in the exhaust temperature was observed for the blends than to that of gasoline. It was observed that all the blends improved the brake thermal efficiency and exhibited high fuel consumption, lower specific energy consumption and lower emissions than gasoline. All the blends performed satisfactorily on spark-ignition engine without engine modification
