Supergravity Inflation on the Brane
We study N=1 Supergravity inflation in the context of the braneworld
scenario. Particular attention is paid to the problem of the onset of inflation
at sub-Planckian field values and the ensued inflationary observables. We find
that the so-called -problem encountered in supergravity inspired
inflationary models can be solved in the context of the braneworld scenario,
for some range of the parameters involved. Furthermore, we obtain an upper
bound on the scale of the fifth dimension, M_5 \lsim 10^{-3} M_P, in case the
inflationary potential is quadratic in the inflaton field, . If the
inflationary potential is cubic in , consistency with observational data
requires that .Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev.
RSPO1/beta-Catenin Signaling Pathway Regulates Oogonia Differentiation and Entry into Meiosis in the Mouse Fetal Ovary
Differentiation of germ cells into male gonocytes or female oocytes is a central event in sexual reproduction. Proliferation and differentiation of fetal germ cells depend on the sex of the embryo. In male mouse embryos, germ cell proliferation is regulated by the RNA helicase Mouse Vasa homolog gene and factors synthesized by the somatic Sertoli cells promote gonocyte differentiation. In the female, ovarian differentiation requires activation of the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway in the somatic cells by the secreted protein RSPO1. Using mouse models, we now show that Rspo1 also activates the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway in germ cells. In XX Rspo1(−/−) gonads, germ cell proliferation, expression of the early meiotic marker Stra8, and entry into meiosis are all impaired. In these gonads, impaired entry into meiosis and germ cell sex reversal occur prior to detectable Sertoli cell differentiation, suggesting that β-catenin signaling acts within the germ cells to promote oogonial differentiation and entry into meiosis. Our results demonstrate that RSPO1/β-catenin signaling is involved in meiosis in fetal germ cells and contributes to the cellular decision of germ cells to differentiate into oocyte or sperm
Far-infrared vibrational properties of high-pressure-high-temperature C60 polymers and the C60 dimer
We report high-resolution far-infrared transmission measurements of the 2 + 2 cycloaddition C-60 dimer and two-dimensional rhombohedral and one-dimensional orthorhombic high-pressure high-temperature C60 polymers. In the spectral region investigated(20-650 cm(-1)), we see no low-energy interball modes, but symmetry breaking of the linked C-60 balls is evident in the complex spectrum of intramolecular modes. Experimental features suggest large splittings or frequency shifts of some IhC60-derived modes that are activated by symmetry reduction, implying that the balls are strongly distorted in these structures. We have calculated the vibrations of all three systems by first-principles quantum molecular dynamics and use them to assign the predominant IhC60 symmetries of observed modes. Pur calculations show unprecedentedly large downshifts of T-1u(2)-derived modes and extremely large splittings of other modes, both of which are consistent with the experimental spectra. For the rhombohedral and orthorhombic polymers, the T-1u(2)-derived mode that is polarized along the bonding direction is calculated to downshift below any T-1u(1)-derived modes. We also identify a previously unassigned feature near 610 cm(-1) in all three systems as a widely split or shifted mode derived from various silent IhC60 vibrations, confirming a strong perturbation model for these linked fullerene structures

Chemical and isotopic characteristics of the coso east flankhydrothermal fluids: implications for the location and nature of the heatsource
Fluids have been sampled from 9 wells and 2 fumaroles fromthe East Flank of the Coso hydrothermal system with a view toidentifying, if possible, the location and characteristics of the heatsource inflows into this portion of the geothermal field. Preliminaryresults show that there has been extensive vapor loss in the system, mostprobably in response to production. Wells 38A-9, 51-16 and 83A-16 showthe highest CO2-CO-CH4-H2 chemical equilibration temperatures, rangingbetween 300-340oC, and apart from 38A-9, the values are generally inaccordance with the measured temperatures in the wells. Calculatedtemperatures for the fractionation of 13C between CO2 and CH4 are inexcess of 400oC in fluids from wells 38A-9, 64-16-RD2 and 51A-16,obviously pointing to equilibrium conditions from deeper portions of thereservoir. Given that the predominant reservoir rock lithologies in theCoso system are relatively silicic (granitic to dioritic), the isotopicsignatures appear to reflect convective circulation and equilibrationwithin rocks close to the plastic-brittle transition. 3He/4He signatures,in conjunction with relative volatile abundances in the Coso fluids, point to a possibly altered mantle source for the heat sourcefluids
WMAP and Supergravity Inflationary Models
We study a class of N=1 Supergravity inflationary models in which the
evolution of the inflaton dynamics is controlled by a single power in the
inflaton field at the point where the observed density fluctuations are
produced, in the context of the braneworld scenario, in light of WMAP results.
In particular, we find that the bounds on the spectral index and its running
constrain the parameter space both for models where the inflationary potential
is dominated by a quadratic term and by a cubic term in the inflaton field. We
also find that is required for the quadratic model whereas
for the cubic model. Moreover, we have determined an upper bound
on the five-dimensional Planck scale, M_5 \lsim 0.019 M, for the quadratic
model. On the other hand, a running spectral index with on large scales
and on small scales is not possible in either case.Comment: 7 pages, 4 eps figures, references corrected, version to appear in

Electromagnetic Probes
A review is presented of dilepton and real photon measurements in
relativistic heavy ion collisions over a very broad energy range from the low
energies of the BEVALAC up to the highest energies available at RHIC. The
dileptons cover the invariant mass range \mll = 0 - 2.5 GeV/c, i.e. the
continuum at low and intermediate masses and the light vector mesons, . The review includes also measurements of the light vector mesons
in elementary reactions.Comment: To be published in Landolt-Boernstein Volume 1-23A; 40 pages, 24
