Modelling strong interactions and longitudinally polarized vector boson scattering
We study scattering of the electroweak gauge bosons in 5D warped models.
Within two different models we determine the precise manner in which the Higgs
boson and the vector resonances ensure the unitarity of longitudinal vector
boson scattering. We identify three separate scales that determine the dynamics
of the scattering process in all cases. For a quite general background geometry
of 5D, these scales can be linked to a simple functional of the warp factor.
The models smoothly interpolate between a `composite' Higgs limit and a
Higgsless limit. By holographic arguments, these models provide an effective
description of vector boson scattering in 4D models with a strongly coupled
electroweak breaking sector.Comment: 30 pages, no figure
Conserved collateral antibiotic susceptibility networks in diverse clinical strains of Escherichia coli.
There is urgent need to develop novel treatment strategies to reduce antimicrobial resistance. Collateral sensitivity (CS), where resistance to one antimicrobial increases susceptibility to other drugs, might enable selection against resistance during treatment. However, the success of this approach would depend on the conservation of CS networks across genetically diverse bacterial strains. Here, we examine CS conservation across diverse Escherichia coli strains isolated from urinary tract infections. We determine collateral susceptibilities of mutants resistant to relevant antimicrobials against 16 antibiotics. Multivariate statistical analyses show that resistance mechanisms, in particular efflux-related mutations, as well as the relative fitness of resistant strains, are principal contributors to collateral responses. Moreover, collateral responses shift the mutant selection window, suggesting that CS-informed therapies may affect evolutionary trajectories of antimicrobial resistance. Our data allow optimism for CS-informed therapy and further suggest that rapid detection of resistance mechanisms is important to accurately predict collateral responses
The crisis in peacekeeping
Peacekeeping under United Nations auspices, while it has achieved some notable results in recent years, is in acute crisis.
The problems which peacekeeping now faces, and will go on facing in coming years, are such as to confirm that we are very far still from any form of global governance that involves a truly global capacity for peacekeeping is, and is likely to remain, patcy, ad hoc, and more appropriate to some situationsthan to others. It is vital that its achievements, its reputation, and its future possibilities should not be undermined by its applications to too many conflicts, and by failure to adress some of the hard questions it now faces
