Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for non-Hodgkin lymphomas
High-dose chemotherapy (HDT) followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) has proved to provide significant advantage regarding event-free and overall survival in patients with chemosensitive relapses of aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) after conventional therapy. These results encouraged many investigators to use HDT as part of first-line therapy but the results are contradictory. There is no consensus regarding management of relapsed or refractory DLBCL. In follicular lymphomas, autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT) is considered the treatment of choice for young patients with relapsed disease. Autologous SCT has also been evaluated in prospective trials as first-line treatment for high risk patients at diagnosis, but the results are not yet conclusive. In mantle cell lymphoma, autologous stem cell transplantation has been employed as part of first-line therapy. Allo-SCT for patients with lymphoma was first performed in the mid-1980s. The high transplant-related mortality, seen after myeloablative conditioning, discouraged broader interest in this approach and made further research difficult. The generally lower relapse rates after allo-SCT, the association of GvHD with reduced relapse rates, the increase of relapse rates after ex vivo or in vivo T-cell depletion, and the frequent responses to DLIs all support the existence of a graft-vs.-lymphoma effect. However, further data analysis supports the view that not all lymphomas are equal. While slowly proliferating diseases such as follicular lymphoma seem particularly sensitive targets for allogeneic T-cells, results of allo-SCT with aggressive B-cell lymphomas have been less convincing. Patients with these latter diseases obviously need vigorous debulking of their tumor prior to conditioning. Reduced-intensity conditioning fueled a renaissance of allo-SCT as treatment of lymphoma because the lower expected TRM was highly attractive for a patient population where the transplant-related death rate after myeloablative conditioning had, in many instances, exceeded 50%.No final da década de 70, ocorreu o primeiro relato de sucesso com a utilização de quimioterapia de alta dose, seguida de transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas autólogo (TCTH auto), em pacientes com linfoma não Hodgkin (LNH).
The alignment of food production systems with the trends and demands of the world population plays an important global role. This study aims to discuss the convergence of trends related to the Brazilian beef cattle supply chain from a food security perspective. Therefore, it includes important reports on the future of this supply chain and its input production, taking on a qualitative approach to consider trends in animal health, genetics, nutrition, forage, and farm machinery in terms of the development of Brazilian agriculture and the future of food and agribusiness. From a managerial point of view, it was possible to provide information capable of leading to a sustainable understanding. Thus, a content analysis of the documents was carried out, coding them through the Sustainable Development Goals and categorizing them by taking into account the 2030 Agenda?s five Ps (people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships). Along this line, the discussion highlights the themes of poverty and climate change, emphasizing them with regard to the categorization social aspects ? the P of people). Future trends will require a workforce prepared to deal with the additional limitations that can arise with the use of new technologies as productivity increases
Vaccinia Virus Infection in Monkeys, Brazilian Amazon
To detect orthopoxvirus in the Brazilian Amazon, we conducted a serosurvey of 344 wild animals. Neutralizing antibodies against orthopoxvirus were detected by plaque-reduction neutralizing tests in 84 serum samples. Amplicons from 6 monkey samples were sequenced. These amplicons identified vaccinia virus genetically similar to strains from bovine vaccinia outbreaks in Brazil
ENIGMA-anxiety working group : rationale for and organization of large-scale neuroimaging studies of anxiety disorders
Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and disabling but seem particularly tractable to investigation with translational neuroscience methodologies. Neuroimaging has informed our understanding of the neurobiology of anxiety disorders, but research has been limited by small sample sizes and low statistical power, as well as heterogenous imaging methodology. The ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group has brought together researchers from around the world, in a harmonized and coordinated effort to address these challenges and generate more robust and reproducible findings. This paper elaborates on the concepts and methods informing the work of the working group to date, and describes the initial approach of the four subgroups studying generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobia. At present, the ENIGMA-Anxiety database contains information about more than 100 unique samples, from 16 countries and 59 institutes. Future directions include examining additional imaging modalities, integrating imaging and genetic data, and collaborating with other ENIGMA working groups. The ENIGMA consortium creates synergy at the intersection of global mental health and clinical neuroscience, and the ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group extends the promise of this approach to neuroimaging research on anxiety disorders
One More Piece in the VACV Ecological Puzzle: Could Peridomestic Rodents Be the Link between Wildlife and Bovine Vaccinia Outbreaks in Brazil?
BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that smallpox eradication was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1980, other poxviruses have emerged and re-emerged, with significant public health and economic impacts. Vaccinia virus (VACV), a poxvirus used during the WHO smallpox vaccination campaign, has been involved in zoonotic infections in Brazilian rural areas (Bovine Vaccinia outbreaks - BV), affecting dairy cattle and milkers. Little is known about VACV's natural hosts and its epidemiological and ecological characteristics. Although VACV was isolated and/or serologically detected in Brazilian wild animals, the link between wildlife and farms has not yet been elucidated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, we describe for the first time, to our knowledge, the isolation of a VACV (Mariana virus - MARV) from a mouse during a BV outbreak. Genetic data, in association with biological assays, showed that this isolate was the same etiological agent causing exanthematic lesions observed in the cattle and human inhabitants of a particular BV-affected area. Phylogenetic analysis grouped MARV with other VACV isolated during BV outbreaks. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: These data provide new biological and epidemiological information on VACV and lead to an interesting question: could peridomestic rodents be the link between wildlife and BV outbreaks
Consumer Complaints and Company Market Value
Consumer complaints affect company market value and common sense suggests that a negative impact is
expected. However, do complaints always negatively impact company market value? We hypothesize in this
study that complaints may have a non-linear effect on market value. Positive (e.g. avoiding high costs to solve
complaints) and negative (e.g. speedy and intense diffusion) tradeoffs may occur given the level of complaints.
To test our non-linear hypothesis, a panel data was collected from cell phone service providers from 2005 to
2013. The results supported our tradeoff rationale. Low levels of complaints allow for companies to increase
market value, while high levels of complaints cause increasing harm to market value. The sample, model and
period considered in this study, indicates a level of 0.49 complaints per thousand consumers as the threshold for
a shift in tradeoffs. The effects on market value become increasingly negative when trying to make reductions to
move below this level, due to negative tradeoffs
