Defoliation of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat) cv. Reagan Sunny for improved flowering and cut flower quality

    Get PDF
The effects of different levels of defoliation i.e. 0 (control), 20, 40, 60 and 80% at visible floral bud stage on growth, flowering and cut flower quality of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) cv. Reagan Sunny were investigated. Plant height was only reduced by 5% at the highest level of defoliation, whereas the stem diameter was not affected. The time of floral bud break (showing colour), was delayed as level of defoliation increased. However, time of floral bud break within a plant was more synchronised. The spray diameter was reduced and vase life was increased by defoliation up to 60%. Both contributed to better cut flower quality. Other quality parameters such as flower size and stem diameter were not markedly affected. Total fresh and dry weights were linearly decreased with level of defoliation. There was a change in dry matter distribution, in which more dry matter was partitioned to the structural parts i.e. the stems and flower stalks as level of defoliation increased. There was no change on dry matter partitioning to flowers by defoliation. Defoliation at 60% can be the compromised level for cv. Reagan Sunny grown under high temperature environment

Malaysia as a culinary tourism destination : international tourists’ perspective / M. Shahrim Ab. Karim, Bee-Lia Chua and Hamdin Salleh

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to determine Malaysia’s current food image and food attribute satisfaction from international tourists’ points of view and subsequently assess their overall satisfaction with the eating experience and behavioral intention. The results indicated that Malaysia possesses clear images of ‘core food value’, ‘Malaysian food specialty’, and ‘Malaysian food uniqueness’ but is rather unclear on the images of ‘food and dining atmosphere’ and ‘features of Malaysian food’. Tourists’ satisfaction with ‘quality and value of food’ and ‘accessibility convenience’ were relatively higher than ‘dining atmosphere’ and ‘culinary tourism products’. Regression analyses revealed that food images and food attributes’ satisfaction significantly predicted tourists’ overall satisfaction, and the overall satisfaction revealed a significant relationship with tourists’ behavioral intentions. Implications for managers who are involved in food tourism are posited

A Human-Centred Approach to National Identity Management Systems

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the concept of a human-centred Identity Management System (IDMS), and how it can be implemented by organisations. The review of the literature on previous approaches to identity (i.e. privacy, trust, and usability) reveals that claims of IDMS being ‘human-centred’ are rhetorical; in reality, organisations’ administrative convenience is prioritised over the needs of individuals who are treated as purely functional components within the IDMS ecosystem. The research conducted to build a human-centred identity concept involved three separate studies, each approaching the question of identity from a different perspective. Study 1, the system study, focused on the design of IDMS and its impact on individuals’ everyday lives. A total of 14 different past and present N-IDMS implementations were analysed using thematic coding. The result of the study was the development of a framework that expressed a system in terms of a set of structural and metrical design properties, and how these can shape the individuals’ lived experience of identity. Study 2, the individual study, explored individuals’ perceptions and initial acceptance of N-IDMS. Grounded Theory analysis was applied to the data from 15 focus group discussions (groups consisted of 3 participants who were all either of British, Indian, or Bruneian nationality). The study revealed that individuals’ decision to accept an IDMS are influenced by their situation perception, system judgment, and concerns. These findings were further refined through the use of a survey study. The individual study also explored the impacts of National Culture on individuals’ perception of an IDMS. Finally, the third study took an organisation-centric approach, through the analysis of documentation and interviews on the current N-IDMS implementations in 3 different countries (UK, Brunei, and India). Exploring identity as a strategic resource, the study developed a set of organisational requirements around the identity creation and identity application processes, which have an influence the design of the IDMS. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a unified framework that provides a complete narrative of the identity situation, from planning and design to individual perceptions, as well as the impacts on the lived experience. The findings of this research have been validated through the use of expert evaluations, which have found the framework to be complete and useful for both practitioners and researchers

Knowledge Management ( KM ) A New Management Paradigm in M.I.N.T

    Get PDF
Knowledge management (KM) is one of the leading approaches used for organizationalimprovement in which a range of specific processes and practices for identifying, capturing, acquiring, organizing and preserving knowledge and for making it available for transfer, sharingand reuse across the organization are being used. KM can help research and development (R&D)organization to intensify innovation by using information and communication technology (ICT) tofacilitate the knowledge flow. Even though KM is a new management paradigm in MINT, the KMstructure, policy, objectives, strategies and initiatives has been established. However implementationrate is rather slow and the impact of KM initiatives is not readily felt. This paper has identified andcompared KM case studies. These are analysed and assessed based on their challenges, strategiesand lesson learnt from an ICT perspective. The analysis and assessment of the case studies is used todevelop action plans to improve MINT KM implementation. The result of this analysis andassessment will be proposed as MINT KM solution in the future. Keywords: knowledge management, knowledge management process framework, knowledge creationspiral model, knowledge management life cycle, knowledge management processes cycl

The effect of carbon sources on the expression level of thermostable L2 lipase in Pichia pastoris

    Get PDF
Thermostable lipases are enzymes that are particularly pleasing for industrial purposes such as in the production of detergents, animal skin-based industry and food processing endeavours. Thermostable L2 lipase gene fished out from Bacillus sp. L2 was cloned into Pichia pastoris strain GS115 under constitutive expression system of pGAPZαA. Study performed on various carbon sources revealed that glucose and glycerol support the growth of Pichia pastoris and expression of L2 lipase. In addition, the by-product of sugar refinery processes (molasses) was found to be a potential carbon source for the growth of P. pastoris and L2 lipase expression. Since the thermostable L2 lipase will be extracellularly secreted into the medium, the use of P. pastoris expression system is seen as an alternative to the conventional expression system of Escherichia coli that applies intracellular expression of the L2 lipase gene encoded.Key words: Thermostable lipase, Pichia pastoris, constitutive expression, carbon source

This paper explored the pattern of students’ learning setting preferences in Al Quran memorisation and satisfaction towards the settings in 10 consecutive days of an experiment. Subjects were assigned to five different Hafazan settings in their learning ecology set based on the findings from the literature. Eight indicators encompass the memorisation performance, comfort level towards setting arrangement and position, perceived wall finishes, furniture ergonomic, brightness level, temperature and privacy, were adapted to record their learning experience in manipulated settings. The objective of this investigation is to study the satisfaction and comfort level of students during Quran memorisation as well as to identify the preferences setting arrangement while memorising the given verses of Quran. The result is segregated between gender. It is pertinent to note, both genders prefer at seat at window face setting. However, male students would rather sit on the chair with a table provided while female students tend to choose sitting with cross-legged. In conclusion, both objectives are achieved. It seems both genders have different preferences in terms of position. The findings are significant for further investigation of Islamic learning ecology and behavioural studies, that is limitedly available for references. Implications of the findings discussed
