Algebraic Properties of Valued Constraint Satisfaction Problem
The paper presents an algebraic framework for optimization problems
expressible as Valued Constraint Satisfaction Problems. Our results generalize
the algebraic framework for the decision version (CSPs) provided by Bulatov et
al. [SICOMP 2005]. We introduce the notions of weighted algebras and varieties
and use the Galois connection due to Cohen et al. [SICOMP 2013] to link VCSP
languages to weighted algebras. We show that the difficulty of VCSP depends
only on the weighted variety generated by the associated weighted algebra.
Paralleling the results for CSPs we exhibit a reduction to cores and rigid
cores which allows us to focus on idempotent weighted varieties. Further, we
propose an analogue of the Algebraic CSP Dichotomy Conjecture; prove the
hardness direction and verify that it agrees with known results for VCSPs on
two-element sets [Cohen et al. 2006], finite-valued VCSPs [Thapper and Zivny

An open-label study of herbal topical medication (Psirelax) for patients with chronic plaque psoriasis
Psirelax is an herbal topical medication indicated for the treatment ofpatients with psoriasis. Its efficacy was determined in an open-labelstudy in 22 patients (15 men, 7 women) with a mean age of 48.9±11.8years suffering from chronic plaque psoriasis. The patients weretreated by application of Psirelax twice a day for a period of 4 weeks.Clinical assessment was performed using the Psoriasis Area andSeverity Index (PASI) and the Beer-Sheva Psoriasis Severity Score(BPSS). The results shows that Psirelax was well tolerated and thereno local or systemic side effects. There was 59% reduction in PASI,from a mean of 5.9 ± 4.0 before treatment to 2.4 ± 2.4 after treatment(p<0.001). In 8 patients (36%) PASI decreased in more than 75%(PASI75). In 16 patients (73%) PASI decreased in more than 50%(PASI50). Application of Psirelax was associated with a decrease indisease severity, as assessed by the patients and physicians. It isconcluded that Psirelax treatment was well tolerated in patients withchronic plaque psoriasis
Signatures of Star-planet interactions
Planets interact with their host stars through gravity, radiation and
magnetic fields, and for those giant planets that orbit their stars within
10 stellar radii (0.1 AU for a sun-like star), star-planet
interactions (SPI) are observable with a wide variety of photometric,
spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric studies. At such close distances, the
planet orbits within the sub-alfv\'enic radius of the star in which the
transfer of energy and angular momentum between the two bodies is particularly
efficient. The magnetic interactions appear as enhanced stellar activity
modulated by the planet as it orbits the star rather than only by stellar
rotation. These SPI effects are informative for the study of the internal
dynamics and atmospheric evolution of exoplanets. The nature of magnetic SPI is
modeled to be strongly affected by both the stellar and planetary magnetic
fields, possibly influencing the magnetic activity of both, as well as
affecting the irradiation and even the migration of the planet and rotational
evolution of the star. As phase-resolved observational techniques are applied
to a large statistical sample of hot Jupiter systems, extensions to other
tightly orbiting stellar systems, such as smaller planets close to M dwarfs
become possible. In these systems, star-planet separations of tens of stellar
radii begin to coincide with the radiative habitable zone where planetary
magnetic fields are likely a necessary condition for surface habitability.Comment: Accepted for publication in the handbook of exoplanet
Stellar Coronal and Wind Models: Impact on Exoplanets
Surface magnetism is believed to be the main driver of coronal heating and
stellar wind acceleration. Coronae are believed to be formed by plasma confined
in closed magnetic coronal loops of the stars, with winds mainly originating in
open magnetic field line regions. In this Chapter, we review some basic
properties of stellar coronae and winds and present some existing models. In
the last part of this Chapter, we discuss the effects of coronal winds on

Toward Establishing Integrated, Comprehensive, and Sustainable Meningitis Surveillance in Africa to Better Inform Vaccination Strategies
Large populations across sub-Saharan Africa remain at risk of devastating acute bacterial meningitis epidemics and endemic disease. Meningitis surveillance is a cornerstone of disease control, essential for describing temporal changes in disease epidemiology, the rapid detection of outbreaks, guiding vaccine introduction and monitoring vaccine impact. However, meningitis surveillance in most African countries is weak, undermined by parallel surveillance systems with little to no synergy and limited laboratory capacity. African countries need to implement comprehensive meningitis surveillance systems to adapt to the rapidly changing disease trends and vaccine landscapes. The World Health Organization and partners have developed a new investment case to restructure vaccine-preventable disease surveillance. With this new structure, countries will establish comprehensive and sustainable meningitis surveillance systems integrated with greater harmonization between population-based and sentinel surveillance systems. There will also be stronger linkage with existing surveillance systems for vaccine-preventable diseases, such as polio, measles, yellow fever, and rotavirus, as well as with other epidemic-prone diseases to leverage their infrastructure, transport systems, equipment, human resources and funding. The implementation of these concepts is currently being piloted in a few countries in sub-Saharan Africa with support from the World Health Organization and other partners. African countries need to take urgent action to improve synergies and coordination between different surveillance systems to set joint priorities that will inform action to control devastating acute bacterial meningitis effectively
An N-Terminal Extension to UBA5 Adenylation Domain Boosts UFM1 Activation: Isoform-Specific Differences in Ubiquitin-like Protein Activation

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Modification of proteins by the ubiquitin-like protein, UFM1, requires activation of UFM1 by the E1-activating enzyme, UBA5. In humans, UBA5 possesses two isoforms, each comprising an adenylation domain, but only one containing an N-terminal extension. Currently, the role of the N-terminal extension in UFM1 activation is not clear. Here we provide structural and biochemical data on UBA5 N-terminal extension to understand its contribution to UFM1 activation. The crystal structures of the UBA5 long isoform bound to ATP with and without UFM1 show that the N-terminus not only is directly involved in ATP binding but also affects how the adenylation domain interacts with ATP. Surprisingly, in the presence of the N-terminus, UBA5 no longer retains the 1:2 ratio of ATP to UBA5, but rather this becomes a 1:1 ratio. Accordingly, the N-terminus significantly increases the affinity of ATP to UBA5. Models of Star-Planet Magnetic Interaction
Magnetic interactions between a planet and its environment are known to lead
to phenomena such as aurorae and shocks in the solar system. The large number
of close-in exoplanets that were discovered triggered a renewed interest in
magnetic interactions in star-planet systems. Multiple other magnetic effects
were then unveiled, such as planet inflation or heating, planet migration,
planetary material escape, and even modification of the host star properties.
We review here the recent efforts in modelling and understanding magnetic
interactions between stars and planets in the context of compact systems. We
first provide simple estimates of the effects of magnetic interactions and then
detail analytical and numerical models for different representative scenarii.
We finally lay out a series of future developments that are needed today to
