    First results from the asymmetric O(a) improved Fermilab action

    We present first results from calculations using O(a) improved (FNAL) space-time asymmetric action on a 12^3 x 24 quenched lattice at \beta = 5.7 and c_SW = 1.57. The asymmetry parameter is determined non-perturbatively from the energy-momentum dispersion relation. This improvement scheme is mass dependent, and the calculations have been done in the charm and bottom quark mass sectors since it is at these heavier masses that the asymmetry is expected to be relevant.Comment: 3 pp. LaTeX2e, 6PostScript figures, uses espcrc2.sty.     We extend the Fermilab formalism for heavy quarks to develop a more improved action. We give results of matching calculations of the improvement couplings at tree level.     Maxwell-Chern-Simons Q-balls

    We examine the energetics of QQ-balls in Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in two space dimensions. Whereas gauged QQ-balls are unallowed in this dimension in the absence of a Chern-Simons term due to a divergent electromagnetic energy, the addition of a Chern-Simons term introduces a gauge field mass and renders finite the otherwise-divergent electromagnetic energy of the QQ-ball. Similar to the case of gauged QQ-balls, Maxwell-Chern-Simons QQ-balls have a maximal charge. The properties of these solitons are studied as a function of the parameters of the model considered, using a numerical technique known as relaxation.     New Fundamental dHvA Frequency in Canonical Low-Dimensional Fermi Liquids

    We show that a new fundamental period PfP_{f} of dHvA oscillations, which appears along with other ``forbidden'' combination frequencies in a multi-band canonical Fermi-liquid, is very robust with respect to a finite smearing of Landau levels and a background of non-quantized states.     We present the recent Fermilab calculations of the masses of the light quarks, using tadpole-improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (SW) quarks. Various sources of systematic errors are studied. Our final result for the average light quark mass in the quenched approximation evaluated in the MSˉ\bar{MS} scheme is mˉq(ÎŒ=2GeV;nf=0)=(mu+md)/2=3.6±0.6MeV\bar{m}_q(\mu=2 GeV;n_f=0)= (m_u+m_d)/2=3.6 \pm 0.6 MeV.Comment: 3 pgs. 3 figures. espcrc2.sty included.     A precise determination of the Bc mass from dynamical lattice QCD

    We perform a precise calculation of the mass of the B_c meson using unquenched configurations from the MILC collaboration including 2+1 flavours of improved staggered quarks. Lattice NRQCD and the Fermilab formalism are used to describe the b and c quarks respectively.     Angular dependence of novel magnetic quantum oscillations in a quasi-two-dimensional multiband Fermi liquid with impurities

    The semiclassical Lifshitz-Kosevich-type description is given for the angular dependence of quantum oscillations with combination frequencies in a multiband quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a constant number of electrons. The analytical expressions are found for the Dingle, thermal, spin, and amplitude (Yamaji) reduction factors of the novel combination harmonics, where the latter two strongly oscillate with the direction of the field. At the "magic" angles those factors reduce to the purely two-dimensional expressions given earlier. The combination harmonics are suppressed in the presence of the non-quantized ("background") states, and they decay exponentially faster with temperature and/or disorder compared to the standard harmonics, providing an additional tool for electronic structure determination.     We summarize our lattice QCD study of the form factor at zero recoil in the decay anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino. After careful consideration of all sources of systematic uncertainty, we find, h_A1(1) = 0.913(+0.024-0.017)(+0.017-0.030), where the first uncertainty is from statistics and fitting while the second combined uncertainty is from all other systematic effects.Comment: Lattice2001(HeavyQuark); 3 pages, 2 eps figures, espcrc2.st

    Molecular mechanisms underpinning transgenerational plasticity in the green sea urchin \u3cem\u3ePsammechinus miliaris\u3c/em\u3e

    The pre-conditioning of adult marine invertebrates to altered conditions, such as low pH, can significantly impact offspring outcomes, a process which is often referred to as transgenerational plasticity (TGP). This study describes for the first time, the gene expression profiles associated with TGP in the green sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris and evaluates the transcriptional contribution to larval resilience. RNA-Seq was used to determine how the expression profiles of larvae spawned into low pH from pre-acclimated adults differed to those of larvae produced from adults cultured under ambient pH. The main findings demonstrated that adult conditioning to low pH critically pre-loads the embryonic transcriptional pool with antioxidants to prepare the larvae for the “new” conditions. In addition, the classic cellular stress response, measured via the production of heat shock proteins (the heat shock response (HSR)), was separately evaluated. None of the early stage larvae either spawned in low pH (produced from both ambient and pre-acclimated adults) or subjected to a separate heat shock experiment were able to activate the full HSR as measured in adults, but the capacity to mount an HSR increased as development proceeded. This compromised ability clearly contributes to the vulnerability of early stage larvae to acute environmental challenge
