    Large-scale protein level comparison of Deltaproteobacteria reveals cohesive metabolic groups

    Deltaproteobacteria, now proposed to be the phyla Desulfobacterota, Myxococcota, and SAR324, are ubiquitous in marine environments and play essential roles in global carbon, sulfur, and nutrient cycling. Despite their importance, our understanding of these bacteria is biased towards cultured organisms. Here we address this gap by compiling a genomic catalog of 1 792 genomes, including 402 newly reconstructed and characterized metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from coastal and deep-sea sediments. Phylogenomic analyses reveal that many of these novel MAGs are uncultured representatives of Myxococcota and Desulfobacterota that are understudied. To better characterize Deltaproteobacteria diversity, metabolism, and ecology, we clustered ~1 500 genomes based on the presence/absence patterns of their protein families. Protein content analysis coupled with large-scale metabolic reconstructions separates eight genomic clusters of Deltaproteobacteria with unique metabolic profiles. While these eight clusters largely correspond to phylogeny, there are exceptions where more distantly related organisms appear to have similar ecological roles and closely related organisms have distinct protein content. Our analyses have identified previously unrecognized roles in the cycling of methylamines and denitrification among uncultured Deltaproteobacteria.     Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV

    A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81 GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure

    Sputum and serum calprotectin are useful biomarkers during CF exacerbation

    AbstractBackgroundAdequate monitoring of cystic fibrosis lung disease is difficult. CF exacerbation offers a unique setting to test the utility of biomarkers in the assessment of changing airways inflammation. We hypothesised that levels of calprotectin in sputum (and serum) would change informatively following treatment of an exacerbation.Methods27 patients with CF were recruited at onset of pulmonary exacerbation. Sputum and serum were collected at the start and end of anti-biotic therapy. Sputum calprotectin, interleukin-8 (IL8), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured, as were serum calprotectin, CRP and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).ResultsSputum calprotectin decreased following treatment of an exacerbation (p<0.05), and was superior to other sputum markers. Serum calprotectin, CRP, and VEGF also decreased significantly (p=0.002, p=0.002, p=0.013 respectively). Serum calprotectin level following treatment had predictive value for time to next exacerbation (p=0.032).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the superiority of calprotectin (in sputum and serum) as a biomarker of CF exacerbation over better-established markers

    Search for Bs0B^{0}_{s} oscillations using inclusive lepton events

    A search for Bs oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Compared to previous inclusive lepton analyses, the prop er time resolution and b-flavour mistag rate are significantly improved. Additional sensitivity to Bs mixing is obtained by identifying subsamples of events having a Bs purity which is higher than the average for the whole data sample. Unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits are performed to derive a lower limit of Dms>9.5 ps-1 at 95% CL.
