Lower Critical Dimension of Ising Spin Glasses
Exact ground states of two-dimensional Ising spin glasses with Gaussian and
bimodal (+- J) distributions of the disorder are calculated using a
``matching'' algorithm, which allows large system sizes of up to N=480^2 spins
to be investigated. We study domain walls induced by two rather different types
of boundary-condition changes, and, in each case, analyze the system-size
dependence of an appropriately defined ``defect energy'', which we denote by
DE. For Gaussian disorder, we find a power-law behavior DE ~ L^\theta, with
\theta=-0.266(2) and \theta=-0.282(2) for the two types of boundary condition
changes. These results are in reasonable agreement with each other, allowing
for small systematic effects. They also agree well with earlier work on smaller
sizes. The negative value indicates that two dimensions is below the lower
critical dimension d_c. For the +-J model, we obtain a different result, namely
the domain-wall energy saturates at a nonzero value for L\to \infty, so \theta
= 0, indicating that the lower critical dimension for the +-J model exactly

Textbook Broke: Textbook Affordability as a Social Justice Issue
In light of rising textbook prices, open education resources (OER) have been shown to decrease non-tuition costs, while simultaneously increasing academic access, student performance, and time-to-graduation rates. Yet very little research to date has explored OER’s specific impact on those who are presumed to benefit most from this potential: historically underserved students. This reality has left a significant gap of understanding in the current body of literature, resulting in calls for more empirically-based examinations of OER through a social justice lens. For each of these reasons, this study explored the impact of OER and textbook pricing among racial/ethnic minority students, low-income students, and first-generation college students at a four-year Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in Southern California. Drawing upon more than 700 undergraduate surveys, our univariate, bivariate and multivariate results revealed textbook costs to be a substantial barrier for the vast majority of students. However, those barriers were even more significant among historically underserved college students; thus, confirming textbook affordability as a redistributive justice issue, and positing OER as a potential avenue for realizing a more socially just college experience
Quasi-1D dynamics and nematic phases in the 2D Emery model
We consider the Emery model of a
Cu-O plane of the high temperature superconductors. We show that in a
strong-coupling limit, with strong Coulomb repulsions between electrons on
nearest-neighbor O sites, the electron-dynamics is strictly one dimensional,
and consequently a number of asymptotically exact results can be obtained
concerning the electronic structure. In particular, we show that a nematic
phase, which spontaneously breaks the point- group symmetry of the square

Space as a low-temperature regime of graphs
I define a statistical model of graphs in which 2-dimensional spaces arise at
low temperature. The configurations are given by graphs with a fixed number of
edges and the Hamiltonian is a simple, local function of the graphs.
Simulations show that there is a transition between a low-temperature regime in
which the graphs form triangulations of 2-dimensional surfaces and a
high-temperature regime, where the surfaces disappear. I use data for the
specific heat and other observables to discuss whether this is a phase
transition. The surface states are analyzed with regard to topology and

Scaling and self-averaging in the three-dimensional random-field Ising model
We investigate, by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations, the magnetic
critical behavior of the three-dimensional bimodal random-field Ising model at
the strong disorder regime. We present results in favor of the two-exponent
scaling scenario, , where and are the
critical exponents describing the power-law decay of the connected and
disconnected correlation functions and we illustrate, using various finite-size
measures and properly defined noise to signal ratios, the strong violation of

Atenolol versus losartan in children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome
BACKGROUND : Aortic-root dissection is the leading cause of death in Marfan's syndrome. Studies suggest that with regard to slowing aortic-root enlargement, losartan may be more effective than beta-blockers, the current standard therapy in most centers.
METHODS : We conducted a randomized trial comparing losartan with atenolol in children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome. The primary outcome was the rate of aortic-root enlargement, expressed as the change in the maximum aortic-root-diameter z score indexed to body-surface area (hereafter, aortic-root z score) over a 3-year period. Secondary outcomes included the rate of change in the absolute diameter of the aortic root; the rate of change in aortic regurgitation; the time to aortic dissection, aortic-root surgery, or death; somatic growth; and the incidence of adverse events.
RESULTS : From January 2007 through February 2011, a total of 21 clinical centers enrolled 608 participants, 6 months to 25 years of age (mean [+/- SD] age, 11.5 +/- 6.5 years in the atenolol group and 11.0 +/- 6.2 years in the losartan group), who had an aorticroot z score greater than 3.0. The baseline-adjusted rate of change (+/- SE) in the aortic-root z score did not differ significantly between the atenolol group and the losartan group (-0.139 +/- 0.013 and -0.107 +/- 0.013 standard-deviation units per year, respectively; P = 0.08). Both slopes were significantly less than zero, indicating a decrease in the degree of aortic-root dilatation relative to body-surface area with either treatment. The 3-year rates of aortic-root surgery, aortic dissection, death, and a composite of these events did not differ significantly between the two treatment groups.
CONCLUSIONS : Among children and young adults with Marfan's syndrome who were randomly assigned to losartan or atenolol, we found no significant difference in the rate of aorticroot dilatation between the two treatment groups over a 3-year period
The classical R-matrix of AdS/CFT and its Lie dialgebra structure
The classical integrable structure of Z_4-graded supercoset sigma-models,
arising in the AdS/CFT correspondence, is formulated within the R-matrix
approach. The central object in this construction is the standard R-matrix of
the Z_4-twisted loop algebra. However, in order to correctly describe the Lax
matrix within this formalism, the standard inner product on this twisted loop
algebra requires a further twist induced by the Zhukovsky map, which also plays
a key role in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The non-ultralocality of the
sigma-model can be understood as stemming from this latter twist since it leads
