Damping of Tensor Modes in Cosmology
An analytic formula is given for the traceless transverse part of the
anisotropic stress tensor due to free streaming neutrinos, and used to derive
an integro-differential equation for the propagation of cosmological
gravitational waves. The solution shows that anisotropic stress reduces the
squared amplitude by 35.6 % for wavelengths that enter the horizon during the
radiation-dominated phase, independent of any cosmological parameters. This
decreases the tensor temperature and polarization correlation functions for
these wavelengths by the same amount. The effect is less for wavelengths that
enter the horizon at later times. At the longest wavelengths the decrease in
the tensor correlation functions due to neutrino free streaming ranges from
10.7% for to 9.0% for . An Appendix gives a
general proof that tensor as well as scalar modes satisfy a conservation law
for perturbations outside the horizon, even when the anisotropic stress tensor

The Day-in-the-Life method for assessing infant caregiving in rural Pakistan
Objective: This manuscript describes the Day-in-the-Life (DIL) method for assessing child caregiving activities, its implementation, and findings regarding family members' roles and associations with maternal depression symptoms. Background: Infant caregiving activities are most commonly performed by the mother, although there is increasing acknowledgement of others' contribution. Few methods exist to measure the diverse caregiving activities that mothers and others perform. Method: Method development occurred within the Bachpan Cohort Study in rural Pakistan (N = 1154 maternalâchild dyads) when the child was 3 months old. The DIL was designed as a semi-structured interview in which the mother describes her child's day from their perspective. Regression analyses were then used to explore the correlation between the DIL and depression symptoms, using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) measure. Results: The DIL method was easy to administer and displayed excellent interrater agreement. The findings indicated that instrumental caregiving was mostly provided by the mother alone, others in the household tended to contribute more to infant social interactions, and there was more support from others when the mother was less able to provide care (e.g., when ill). Depression symptoms were higher among women who experienced less contribution from family members when the mother was less able to provide care. Conclusions: The DIL can be deployed to measure infant caregiving activities and associations with maternal mental health. Implications: This method is promising for researchers interested in disentangling the contribution of multiple family members toward child caregiving and its impacts on maternal and child health

Some Consequences of Thermosolutal Convection: The Grain Structure of Castings
The essential principles of thermosolutal convection are outlined, and how convection provides a transport mechanism between the mushy region of a casting and the open bulk liquid is illustrated. The convective flow patterns which develop assist in heat exchange and macroscopic solute segregation during solidification; they also provide a mechanism for the transport of dendritic fragments from the mushy region into the bulk liquid. Surviving fragments become nuclei for equiaxed grains and so lead to blocking of the parental columnar, dendritic growth front from which they originated. The physical steps in such a sequence are considered and some experimental data are provided to support the argument
A complete 3D numerical study of the effects of pseudoscalar-photon mixing on quasar polarizations
We present the results of three-dimensional simulations of quasar
polarizations in the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing in the
intergalactic medium. The intergalactic magnetic field is assumed to be
uncorrelated in wave vector space but correlated in real space. Such a field
may be obtained if its origin is primordial. Furthermore we assume that the
quasars, located at cosmological distances, have negligible initial
polarization. In the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing we show, through a
direct comparison with observations, that this may explain the observed large
scale alignments in quasar polarizations within the framework of big bang
cosmology. We find that the simulation results give a reasonably good fit to

Can induced gravity isotropize Bianchi I, V, or IX Universes?
We analyze if Bianchi I, V, and IX models in the Induced Gravity (IG) theory
can evolve to a Friedmann--Roberson--Walker (FRW) expansion due to the
non--minimal coupling of gravity and the scalar field. The analytical results
that we found for the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory are now applied to the IG theory
which has ( being the square ratio of the Higgs to
Planck mass) in a cosmological era in which the IG--potential is not
significant. We find that the isotropization mechanism crucially depends on the
value of . Its smallness also permits inflationary solutions. For the
Bianch V model inflation due to the Higgs potential takes place afterwads, and
subsequently the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) ends with an effective FRW

The modulation effect for supersymmetric dark matter detection with asymmetric velocity dispersion
The detection of the theoretically expected dark matter is central to
particle physics cosmology. Current fashionable supersymmetric models provide a
natural dark matter candidate which is the lightest supersymmetric particle
(LSP). Such models combined with fairly well understood physics like the quark
substructure of the nucleon and the nuclear form factor and the spin response
function of the nucleus, permit the evaluation of the event rate for
LSP-nucleus elastic scattering. The thus obtained event rates are, however,
very low or even undetectable. So it is imperative to exploit the modulation
effect, i.e. the dependence of the event rate on the earth's annual motion. In
this review we study such a modulation effect in directional and undirectional
experiments. We calculate both the differential and the total rates using
symmetric as well as asymmetric velocity distributions. We find that in the
symmetric case the modulation amplitude is small, less than 0.07. There exist,
however, regions of the phase space and experimental conditions such that the
effect can become larger. The inclusion of asymmetry, with a realistic enhanced
velocity dispersion in the galactocentric direction, yields the bonus of an
enhanced modulation effect, with an amplitude which for certain parameters can

The moonlighting peroxiredoxin-glutaredoxin in Neisseria meningitidis binds plasminogen via a C-terminal lysine residue and contributes to survival in a whole blood model
© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Neisseria meningitidis is a human-restricted bacterium that can invade the bloodstream and cross the blood-brain barrier resulting in life-threatening sepsis and meningitis. Meningococci express a cytoplasmic peroxiredoxin-glutaredoxin (Prx5-Grx) hybrid protein that has also been identified on the bacterial surface. Here, recombinant Prx5-Grx was confirmed as a plasminogen (Plg)-binding protein, in an interaction which could be inhibited by the lysine analogue Δ-aminocapronic acid. rPrx5-Grx derivatives bearing a substituted C-terminal lysine residue (rPrx5-GrxK244A), but not the active site cysteine residue (rPrx5-GrxC185A) or the sub-terminal rPrx5-GrxK230A lysine residue, exhibited significantly reduced Plg-binding. The absence of Prx5-Grx did not significantly reduce the ability of whole meningococcal cells to bind Plg, but under hydrogen peroxide-mediated oxidative stress, the N. meningitidis Îpxn5-grx mutant survived significantly better than the wild-type or complemented strains. Significantly, using human whole blood as a model of meningococcal bacteremia, it was found that the N. meningitidis Îpxn5-grx mutant had a survival defect compared with the parental or complemented strain, confirming an important role for Prx5-Grx in meningococcal pathogenesis
