Finite solid angle correction factors and efficiencies for cadmium telluride detectors

    No full text
Finite solid angle correction factors and absolute detection efficiencies of the CdTe detectors of right circular cylindrical geometry for point sources placed on the axis of the detector, has been calculated for Îł-ray energies from 100 keV to 10 MeV, taking into account various source to detector distances, ranging from 1 to 10 cm. CdTe detectors of several area between 0.12 and 2.5 cm2 of various thicknesses were considered

New empirical relations for stopping power and range of charged particles

    No full text
We have introduced some new empirical relations for stopping powers of protons and alpha particles in the energy range 0.7 to 12 MeV/amu. The range formulas were obtained by directly integrating the stopping power formulas of protons and alpha particles. These relations have been also used to find out stopping powers and ranges in semiconductor detectors. Practical applications of the empirical relations are also discussed.

Seismic imaging of glaciomarine sediments of Antarctica: optimizing the acquistion parameters

    No full text
412-418This paper presents some of the significant points on the designing and acquisition parameters for multi-channel seismic reflection survey in the Antarctic waters with an emphasis of imaging Glaciomarine sediments. Due to their importance in unravelling the paleoclimatic clues, we stress on the practical aspects of seismic data acquisition focussed on targeting glaciomarine sediments on the Antarctic margin. We carried out extensive forward modelling exercise assuming sub-surface model parameters from the published literature pertaining to the Eastern Antarctic Margin (EAM). The reason for choosing this area is that the Prydz Bay sector of EAM has been known to have undergone huge glacial sediment accumulation in the past due to its contiguity with the Amery Ice Shelf. In this article we suggest the best suited acquisition parameters for collecting high quality multi-channel seismic data in order to image the Glaciomarine sediments in this region

Identification Of Risk Factors In Sexually Transmitted Diseases : Role Of Health Education

The study was conducted at STD clinic and Department of Dermatology, safdarjang hospital, New Delhi. It included 150 newly diagnosed STD cases and 150 patients with minor skin ailments who were age and sex matched. The Analysis on â€multiple Logistic Regressio†package showed the following risk factors as significantly associated with acquisition of STDs in descending order of strength of association; extra-material sexual contacts, disharmonious relations with spouse, pre-marital contacts, multiple partners and exposures, homosexuality, non-usage of condoms, alcoholism, delayed sex hygiene, contact with prostitutes, severe depression, unaware about STDs and symptoms, sharing of personal items and psychological morbidity. Health education is vital to change/ modify high risk sexual behaviour and to educate people about the mode of transmission, treatment available and complications. Individual psychological assessment and psychological therapy are also essential whenever applicable

Mine spoil restoration: a strategy combining rainwater harvesting and adaptation to random recurrence of droughts in Rajasthan

    No full text
Rajasthan presents evidence for the existence of one of the most advanced examples of ancient mining and accompanied deforestation to be found anywhere in the world. Mining continues to be an important economic activity contributing to 2% of the State Domestic Product and providing at least a 1.76 % share to the regular employment pool in Rajasthan. However, economic benefits of mineral extraction also accompany environmental, economic and social costs. Mine waste dumps and mined out areas viewed simply as the legacies of past may appear overwhelming environmental hazards presenting ugly picture of cultural landscape. However, mine wastes can be transformed into an opportunity for learning, adaptation and productivity enhancement for sustainable livelihoods through ecological restoration. Here the authors propose a strategy for mine spoil restoration aimed at creating a multifunctional ecosystem in mine waste dumps. They suggest that dredging and sediment removal from traditional tanks and ponds can potentially be used to prepare the substratum over the mine wastes for direct seeding. It will also create enhanced decentralized water storage capacity for wildlife and people. Their strategy combines the concomitant revival of traditional water harvesting systems, ground water recharge, enhanced biomass production and an adaptation to random recurrence of droughts in Rajasthan

Transient cardiac arrhythmias related to lopinavir/ritonavir in two patients with HIV infection

A 42-year-old Thai man was administered the combination drugs liponavir/ritonavir and abacavir/lamivudine. On day 3 he was admitted and his electrocardiogram demonstrated sinus arrest with junctional escape rhythm with a rate of 42 min-1. Three days after stopping the medication he reverted to normal sinus rhythm. A 55-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to hospital with triple vessel disease. He had a permanent pace maker inserted 4 years previously for Mobitz type II AV block detected on stress electrocardiogram, which developed 1 month after initiation of lopinavir/ritonavir. These two cases highlight the importance of considering lopinavir/ritonavir induced arrhythmias when dealing with HIV-positive individuals
