    Local History Unbridled: Anecdotal Reflection in Bringing Digitized Microfilm to Digital Commons

    When vinegar syndrome threatened to destroy microfilm containing a vast trove of history, Murray State University Libraries quickly responded. The microfilm--which included one of the broadest collections of local and regional newspapers in the Jackson Purchase area, as well as birth, marriage, and death certificates from Calloway and surrounding counties--was sent to a commercial vendor for digitization with the intention of archiving and making the contents accessible through the institutional repository, Digital Commons. Today, that microfilm is transitioning from moldering in closed stacks to becoming widely accessible to a global pool of researchers. Presenters will examine the history and logistics of our digitization process; delineate the staffing, workflow, progress and setbacks relating to creating and ingesting the metadata for each issue; and explore how collaboration across departments was key to the successful implementation of the project. Discussions will conclude with some of the unexpected benefits of the project, including classroom applications, the accessibility of the collection to historians and genealogists, and how the project might encourage deeper dives into other collections

    The human homologue of the yeast mitochondrial AAA metalloprotease Yme1p complements a yeast yme1 disruptant

    AbstractIn yeast, three AAA superfamily metalloproteases (Yme1p, Afg3p and Rca1p) are localized to the mitochondrial inner membrane where they perform roles in the assembly and turnover of the respiratory chain complexes. We have investigated the function of the proposed human orthologue of yeast Yme1p, encoded by the YME1L gene on chromosome 10p. Transfection of both HEK-293EBNA and yeast cells with a green fluorescent protein-tagged YME1L cDNA confirmed mitochondrial targeting. When expressed in a yme1 disruptant yeast strain, YME1L restored growth on glycerol at 37°C. We propose that YME1L plays a phylogenetically conserved role in mitochondrial protein metabolism and could be involved in mitochondrial pathologies

    Stochasticity in the adaptive dynamics of evolution: The bare bones

    First a population model with one single type of individuals is considered. Individuals reproduce asexually by splitting into two, with a population-size-dependent probability. Population extinction, growth and persistence are studied. Subsequently the results are extended to such a population with two competing morphs and are applied to a simple model, where morphs arise through mutation. The movement in the trait space of a monomorphic population and its possible branching into polymorphism are discussed. This is a first report. It purports to display the basic conceptual structure of a simple exact probabilistic formulation of adaptive dynamics

    Sedimentology, architecture and depositional setting of the fluvial Spireslack Sandstone of the Midland Valley, Scotland: insights from the Spireslack surface coal mine

    The Spireslack surface coal mine exposes a section in the Carboniferous Lawmuir Formation (Brigantian) into the Upper Limestone Formation (Arnsbergian). This paper describes the stratigraphy exposed at Spireslack and, in so doing, names for the first time the Spireslack Sandstone, a distinctive erosively based, sandstone-dominated unit in the Upper Limestone Formation. The Spireslack Sandstone consists of two fluvial sandstone channel sets and an upper, possibly fluvio-estuarine, succession. From an analysis of their internal architectural elements, the channel sets are interpreted as a low-sinuosity, sand-dominated, mixed-load fluvial system in which avulsion and variations in sediment load played a significant part. The lower channel set appears to be confined to erosional palaeovalleys of limited lateral extent and significant relief. The upper channel set is much more laterally extensive and shows evidence of a generally lower sediment load with a greater degree of lateral accretion and flooding. Consequently, the Spireslack Sandstone may represent a system responding to base level changes of higher magnitude and longer duration than the glacio-eustatic scale commonly attributed to Carboniferous fluvio-deltaic cycles. The Spireslack Sandstone may represent an important correlative marker in the Carboniferous of the Midland Valley and may provide an alternative analogue for some Carboniferous fluvial sandstone stratigraphic traps

    Hydrodynamics of domain growth in nematic liquid crystals

    We study the growth of aligned domains in nematic liquid crystals. Results are obtained solving the Beris-Edwards equations of motion using the lattice Boltzmann approach. Spatial anisotropy in the domain growth is shown to be a consequence of the flow induced by the changing order parameter field (backflow).     Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays

    Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0: (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003, (D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures.     Geology of the Abu Dhabi 1:100 000 map sheet, 100-16, United Arab Emirates

    This Sheet Description describes the Quaternary and solid geology of the Abu Dhabi 1:100 000 scale geological map. The Abu Dhabi district covers 3620 km2 along the Arabian Gulf coast including the northern part of Saadiyat island, Abu Dhabi, part of the Mussafah district and many of the islands to the west. These include Futaisi, Bu Kesheishah, Halat al Bharaini, Al Dabiya, Bu Qumah, Bu Shara, Al Qanatir and Al Rafiq. The sheet also includes a significant part of the coastal plain southwest of Abu Dhabi between Shunayyin in the east to Borquat al Rashid in the west, and south to Maharqah, across which the main E11 coastal highway runs. In the southeast of the district, an area of higher ground is formed of Miocene rocks draped by a variable sequence of cemented and unconsolidated dune sand. The region hosts several major oilfields including the Rumaitha, Shanayel, Al Dabb’iya, Umm al Dalkh, Al Mutarib and Umm al Lulu fields. The region is dominated by a series of offshore islands, part of a chain of barrier islands that extend from north of Abu Dhabi to Marawah Island, west of the present area. These islands, along with the sea-ward margin of the coastal plain are mostly comprised of a thin sequence of intensively studied Holocene marine carbonates termed the Abu Dhabi Formation. These sediments represent a transgressive-regressive sequence, and form the classic carbonate-evaporitic ‘sabkhas’ for which the region is justly famous. The Abu Dhabi Formation includes a range of marine and supratidal facies including coastal spits, bars and beach ridges, lagoonal muds, algal mats and ooidal tidal deltas deposited over the last 10 000 years. The southern limit of the Holocene transgression is marked by a beach ridge running parallel to the coast and clearly visible on satellite imagery. The barrier islands commonly have a core of well-cemented Pleistocene carbonate dune sand (Ghayathi Formation) around which the carbonate spits, bars and ridges of the Abu Dhabi Formation were accreted. The islands have been largely deflated down to the local water-table leading to the development of extensive sabkhas. Consequently, the islands are generally flat but punctuated by small Ghayathi Formation mesas and zeugen, forming mushroom-shaped outcrops rising up to 6 m above sea-level, locally capped with marine limestones of the Late Pleistocene Fuwayrit Formation. Offshore to the north of the island, below low water, is the Great Pearl Bank, an area of reefs and coralgal sands named after the former pearling industry in the region. South of the Holocene beach ridge, much of the onshore area is an extensive, very gently sloping coastal plain, dominated by a deflated planation surface developed on either unconsolidated quartzose aeolian sand or well cemented carbonate grainstones of the Ghayathi Formation. The deflation surface is commonly marked by secondary gypsum forming a sabkha. The Ghayathi Formation palaeodunes are locally well exposed, forming spectacular wind-sculpted mesas and zeugen both on the islands and within the lagoons, but also onshore draping the Miocene rocks in the southeast of the district

    Search for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of the D+, Ds, and D0 Charmed Mesons

    We report the results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current, lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0 mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. Using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, we examine the pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and the l+l- decay modes of D0. No evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, we present branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 24 decay modes examined. Eight of these modes have no previously reported limits, and fourteen are reported with significant improvements over previously published results.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, elsart.cls, epsf.sty, amsmath.sty Submitted to Physics Letters

    Asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons from 500 GeV/c pi- nucleon interactions as a function of xF and pt**2

    We present asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons in Fermilab experiment E791 as a function of xF and pt**2. The data used here consist of 74,000 fully-reconstructed charmed mesons produced by a 500 GeV/c pi- beam on C and Pt foils. The measurements are compared to results of models which predict differences between the production of heavy-quark mesons that have a light quark in common with the beam (leading particles) and those that do not (non-leading particles). While the default models do not agree with our data, we can reach agreement with one of them, PYTHIA, by making a limited number of changes to parameters used

    Search for CP Violation in Charged D Meson Decays

    We report results of a search for CP violation in the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K- K+ pi+, phi pi+, K*(892)0 K+, and pi- pi+ pi+ based on data from the charm hadroproduction experiment E791 at Fermilab. We search for a difference in the D+ and D- decay rates for each of the final states. No evidence for a difference is seen. The decay rate asymmetry parameters A(CP), defined as the difference in the D+ and D- decay rates divided by the sum of the decay rates, are measured to be: A(CP)(K K pi) = -0.014 +/- 0.029, A(CP)(phi pi) = -0.028 +/- 0.036, A(CP)(K*(892) K) = -0.010 +/- 0.050, and A(CP)(pi pi pi) = -0.017 +/- 0.042.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; Elsevier LaTe
