    Kinematics of gas and stars in circumnuclear star-forming regions of early type spirals

We present high resolution (R~20000) spectra in the blue and the far red of cicumnuclear star-forming regions (CNSFRs) in three early type spirals (NGC3351, NGC2903 and NGC3310) which have allowed the study of the kinematics of stars and ionized gas in these structures and, for the first time, the derivation of their dynamical masses for the first two. In some cases these regions, about 100 to 150 pc in size, are seen to be composed of several individual star clusters with sizes between 1.5 and 4.9 pc estimated from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The stellar dispersions have been obtained from the Calcium triplet (CaT) lines at λλ\lambda\lambda 8494,8542,8662 \AA, while the gas velocity dispersions have been measured by Gaussian fits to the Hβ\beta and [OIII] λλ\lambda\lambda 5007 \AA lines on the high dispersion spectra. Values of the stellar velocity dispersions are between 30 and 68 km/s. We apply the virial theorem to estimate dynamical masses of the clusters, assuming that systems are gravitationally bounded and spherically symmetric, and using previously measured sizes. The measured values of the stellar velocity dispersions yield dynamical masses of the order of 107^7 to 108^8 solar masses for the whole CNSFRs. Stellar and gas velocity dispersions are found to differ by about 20 to 30 km/s with the Hβ\beta emission lines being narrower than both the stellar lines and the [OIII] λλ\lambda\lambda 5007 \AA lines. The twice ionized oxygen, on the other hand, shows velocity dispersions comparable to those shown by stars, in some cases, even larger.     Unmodified cellulose filter paper, a sustainable and affordable sorbent for the isolation of biogenic amines from beer samples

    While current trends in Green Analytical Chemistry aim at reducing or simplifying sample treatment, food usually comprises complex matrices where direct analysis is not possible in most cases. In this context, sample treatment plays a pivotal role. Biogenic amines are naturally formed in many foodstuffs due to the action of microorganisms, while their presence has been associated with adverse health effects. In this work, the extraction of seven biogenic amines (cadaverine, histamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, spermidine, spermine, and tyramine) from beer samples has been simplified using laboratory filter paper as sorbent without any further modification. The analysis of the eluates by direct infusion mass spectrometry reduces the time of analysis, increasing the sample throughput. This simple but effective method enabled the determination of the analytes with limits of detection as low as 0.06 mg L−1 and relative standard deviations better than 11.9%. The suitability of the method has been assessed by analyzing eight different types of beers by the standard addition method

    Defibrotide inhibits donor leucocyte-endothelial interactions and protects against acute graft-versus-host disease

    Altres ajuts: This study has been funded by Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation (Grant 11R/2016 and 03R/2019).Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is an effective therapy for the treatment of high-risk haematological malignant disorders and other life-threatening haematological and genetic diseases. Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) remains the most frequent cause of non-relapse mortality following allo-HCT and limits its extensive clinical application. Current pharmacologic agents used for prophylaxis and treatment of aGvHD are not uniformly successful and have serious secondary side effects. Therefore, more effective and safe prophylaxis and therapy for aGvHD are an unmet clinical need. Defibrotide is a multi-target drug successfully employed for prophylaxis and treatment of veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome. Recent preliminary clinical data have suggested some efficacy of defibrotide in the prevention of aGvHD after allo-HCT. Using a fully MHC-mismatched murine model of allo-HCT, we report here that defibrotide, either in prophylaxis or treatment, is effective in preventing T cell and neutrophil infiltration and aGvHD-associated tissue injury, thus reducing aGvHD incidence and severity, with significantly improved survival after allo-HCT. Moreover, we performed in vitro mechanistic studies using human cells revealing that defibrotide inhibits leucocyte-endothelial interactions by down-regulating expression of key endothelial adhesion molecules involved in leucocyte trafficking. Together, these findings provide evidence that defibrotide may represent an effective and safe clinical alternative for both prophylaxis and treatment of aGvHD after allo-HCT, paving the way for new therapeutic approaches

    Phase transitions for suspension flows

    This paper is devoted to study thermodynamic formalism for suspension flows defined over countable alphabets. We are mostly interested in the regularity properties of the pressure function. We establish conditions for the pressure function to be real analytic or to exhibit a phase transition.     Normal-superconducting transition induced by high current densities in YBa2Cu3O7-d melt-textured samples and thin films: Similarities and differences

    Current-voltage characteristics of top seeded melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7-d are presented. The samples were cut out of centimetric monoliths. Films characteristics were also measured on microbridges patterned on thin films grown by dc sputtering. For both types of samples, a quasi-discontinuity or quenching was observed for a current density J* several times the critical current density Jc. Though films and bulks much differ in their magnitude of both Jc and J*, a proposal is made as to a common intrinsic origin of the quenching phenomenon. The unique temperature dependence observed for the ratio J*/Jc, as well as the explanation of the pre-quenching regime in terms of a single dissipation model lend support to our proposal.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Robust exponential decay of correlations for singular-flows

    We construct open sets of Ck (k bigger or equal to 2) vector fields with singularities that have robust exponential decay of correlations with respect to the unique physical measure.
