Efficient superfluorescent light sources with broad bandwidth
We demonstrate various efficient broad-band light sources at ~1µm wavelength with a 3dB bandwidth of up to 65nm at 108mW output power, based on rare-earth doped silica fibers and a simple adjustable spectral filter
Polynomial fixed-parameter algorithms : a case study for longest path on interval graphs.
We study the design of fixed-parameter algorithms for problems already known to be solvable in polynomial time.
The main motivation is to get more efficient algorithms for problems with unattractive polynomial running times. Here, we focus on a fundamental graph problem: Longest Path; it is NP-hard in general but known to be solvable in O(n^4) time on n-vertex interval graphs. We show how to solve Longest Path on Interval Graphs, parameterized by vertex deletion number k to proper interval graphs, in O(k^9n) time. Notably, Longest Path is trivially solvable in linear time on proper interval graphs, and the parameter value k can be approximated up to a factor of 4 in linear time. From a more general perspective, we believe that using parameterized complexity analysis for polynomial-time solvable problems offers a very fertile ground for future studies for all sorts of algorithmic problems. It may enable a refined understanding of efficiency aspects for polynomial-time solvable problems, similarly to what classical parameterized complexity analysis does for NP-hard problems
AdS Taub-Nut Space and the O(N) Vector Model on a Squashed 3-Sphere
In this note, motivated by the Klebanov-Polyakov conjecture we investigate
the strongly coupled O(N) vector model at large on a squashed three-sphere
and its holographic relation to bulk gravity on asymptotically locally
spaces. We present analytical results for the action of the field theory as the
squashing parameter , when the boundary becomes effectively one
dimensional. The dual bulk geometry is AdS-Taub-NUT space in the corresponding
limit. In this limit we solve the theory exactly and show that the action of
the strongly coupled boundary theory scales as .
This result is remarkably close to the scaling of the
Einstein gravity action for AdS-Taub-NUT space. These results explain the
numerical agreement presented in hep-th/0503238, and the soft logarithmic
departure is interpreted as a prediction for the contribution due to higher

-optimal saturated designs: a simulation study
In this work we focus on saturated -optimal designs. Using recent results,
we identify -optimal designs with the solutions of an optimization problem
with linear constraints. We introduce new objective functions based on the
geometric structure of the design and we compare them with the classical
-efficiency criterion. We perform a simulation study. In all the test cases
we observe that designs with high values of -efficiency have also high

Far out or alone in the crowd: Classification of selfevaluators in DEA
The units found strongly efficient in DEA studies on efficiency can be divided into self-evaluators and active peers, depending on whether the peers are referencing any inefficient units or not. The contribution of the paper starts with subdividing the selfevaluators into interior and exterior ones. The exterior self-evaluators are efficient “by default”; there is no firm evidence from observations for the classification. These units should therefore not been regarded as efficient, and be removed from the observations on efficiency scores when performing a two-stage analysis of explaining the distribution of the scores. A method for classifying self-evaluators based on the additive DEA model is developed. The application to municipal nursing- and home care services of Norway shows significant effects of removing exterior self-evaluators from the data when doing a two-stage analysis.Self-evaluator; interior and exterior self-evaluator; DEA; efficiency; referencing zone; nursing homes
