    Get PDF
The current literature review covers the role of sympathetic nervous system activation (SNS) and the significance of a new biomarker catestatin (CST), which is a chromogranin A-derived peptide, for assessing prognosis of patients with heart failure (HF). This review details the works devoted to CST metabolism and its role in clinical conditions with excessive catecholamine production, including the ability to counterbalance the adverse effects of SNS on cardiovascular system. The paper also presents the central results of studies on HF patients and shows the correlation of the CST level with HF functional class and stage. In addition, particular attention is paid on the possibilities and potential benefits of assessing the CST in addition to conventional management of patients hospitalized due to acute decompensated heart failure

Fluid Intelligence: Review of Foreign Studies

    Get PDF
The present review focuses on modern research of fluid intelligence. The concept of fluid intelligence, the place of fluid intelligence in the structure of cognitive abilities, its relation to general intelligence is revealed. The current models of fluid intelligence are considered, including the current leading Cattell–Horn–Carroll model. The neurobiological processes underlying the flexibility of fluid reasoning processes in solving novel problems are discussed. In particular, studies are presented showing that fluid intelligence is mediated by subregions of the prefrontal cortex. Studies of the relationship between fluid intelligence and working memory, as well as studies of fluid intelligence in clinical groups such as children with ADHD and adults with schizophrenia are also discussed. Clinical evidence suggests that fluid intelligence may be key to understanding the structure of cognitive deficits in ADHD syndrome

Saliva versus plasma cytokines as possible predictors of autism severity

    Get PDF
The autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are now widely accepted as a pervasive, complex, heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders with multiple etiologies, subtypes, and developmental trajectories. There are no available and effective biomarkers for them. Immune dysfunction is seen as an important risk factor contributing to the neurodevelopmental deficit in ASD, and is signified, among other things, by an imbalance of cytokines in the brain and on the periphery. In recent years, saliva has been proposed as a biological material for diagnosing ASD, due to the accessibility and non-invasiveness of the method for its production. However, the question of whether salivary cytokine levels may be used as effective early biomarkers for autism requires further research, including saliva versus plasma/serum comparisons.Aim: a comparative analysis of the levels of cytokines: IL-6, IFNγ, TNFα, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10, in saliva and blood plasma to identify possible markers of ASD and their severity in children. The study included 11 children with typical neurodevelopment (TDC) and 55 children with ASD, among whom 37 children had mild or moderate autism (according to CARS), and 18 children had severe autism. Samples of unstimulated mixed saliva and venous blood were simultaneously collected from all children. Salivary concentrations of cytokines: IL-6, IFNγ, TNFα, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10 were determined by multiplex Luminex™ analysis. Plasma levels of cytokines were assessed by ELISA. Differences between groups were tested using the Kruskal-Wallis U-test with post-hoc Conover-Inman comparisons, between samples (saliva/ plasma) are using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The correlation between the concentrations of cytokines in plasma and saliva was determined using linear regression by the RMA method. In all examined groups, the levels of IL-6, IFNγ and IL-10 in saliva were significantly lower, and TNFα, IL-1β and IL-4 were higher than the corresponding levels of the same cytokines in plasma. Regardless of health/ disease status, no significant correlations were found between salivary and plasma cytokine levels in children. IL-1β levels were significantly lower and IL-10 levels were higher in the saliva of both groups of children with ASD compared with TDC. No significant differences in salivary cytokine concentrations were found between children with mild and severe ASD.Thus, salivary cytokines can be used as markers of ASD in children, but not the severity of the condition. The absence of correlations in the levels of some pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines between saliva and blood plasma may probably indicate a special immunological status of an ecological niche, the oral cavity

Algorithmization of management activities in the transition to the digital economy is one of the most important tasks of modern management science. Sketch design is defined by the algorithm creation tool. This algorithmization method is applied to the processes of choosing the type of a homogeneous product, its quality and other consumer properties, utility for the consumer and manufacturer. Products are classified according to their purpose and the resources for their production. The quality of the product is defined as the ratio of the actual properties of the product to the normative ones, while it is necessary to take into account the influence of manufacturing defects, which entails a transition from linear to non-linear quality functions. The cumulative assessment of the product for the consumer is determined taking into account his subjective assessment of the properties of the product, expressed in the weight of the quality of individual utilities. For a manufacturer, the aggregate assessment of product quality directly depends on the main properties of the product, taking into account its other properties, and inversely depends on the cost of purchasing it, taking into account their functional elasticity. The algorithm is recommended for use by specialists dealing with algorithmic management activities

Simultaneous Interpreting : Characteristic of Autonomic Provision of Extreme Cognitive Loads

    Get PDF
Simultaneous interpreting is one of the most comprehensive and energy-consuming types of cognitive activity. To work successfully, a simultaneous interpreter must have a specific functional state. The aim of our study was to find out the basic mechanisms of this functional state, the effect of the simultaneous interpreting on cognitive function changes, and the main factors influencing the degree of the regulatory systems strain. Materials and Methods. 33 individuals participated in the study: 22 linguists specially trained in simultaneous translation composed the experimental group and 11 language-qualified people having no skills of simultaneous translation represented the control group. In compliance with the study design, the measurements were performed under the conditions similar to the real work of simultaneous interpreters: the participants working in succession performed professional tasks: shadowing in the native and foreign languages (German and English), simultaneous interpretation of the reports from the native language to the foreign, and vice versa. The interpreters were psychologically tested using ApWay.ru Web platform before and after the performance on the professional tasks: computer campimetry, test for a simple sensorimotor activity, Stroop test, and test for emotional disadaptation level. Cardiointervalogram was telemetrically recorded during the entire experiment. Results. Some specific aspects of autonomic provision of simultaneous interpreting have been unraveled. A significantly greater tension of the autonomic regulation is manifested by the simultaneous interpreters compared to the control group. It was most prominent when translation was done from the foreign language. The total level of stress during the performance on the linguistic tasks appeared to be higher in the control group. In the simultaneous interpreters, in contrast to the control group, there was registered a high activity level of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and a marked integration of the cardiac rhythm regulation circuits over the entire period of performing the linguistic tasks. The psychological tests have demonstrated a significantly more confident cognitive control relative to the control group. Thus, a specific functional system has been formed in the simultaneous interpreters providing a successful interaction of various information images (or codes) and consolidation of autonomic and cognitive resources during the performance on professional tasks. Lack of the necessary skills and, consequently, of the task-oriented functional system in the participants of the control group resulted in the enhancement of the non-specific (less effective) stress response.Peer reviewe

Relationships between Fluid Intelligence and Executive Functions

In our recent study we investigated the relationship between fluid reasoning ability and prefrontal neocortex functions (spatial working memory and spatial planning). Fluid intelligence was assessed by using КАВС‑II test. Prefrontal neocortex functions were assessed by CANTAB computer test. Sixty normotypical Russian children (32 boys and 28 girls) participated in this study. Our results demonstrate, that two subtests which constitute the Fluid intelligence scale have different correlations with prefrontal functions. Main contribution to the relation between fluid reasoning and working memory was made by Story Completion subtest. Also, we found that there were no relations between fluid reasoning and spatial planning. The study was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project № 18-013-01179

    Get PDF
Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a progressive disease with a high risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), which is very rare in the pediatric population. Aim. To study the clinical course, outcomes and prognosis in various ACM phenotypes in pediatric patients.Material and methods. During the initial selection, 144 publications were found in the PubMed database. From the initially identified results, an analysis of 7 works was carried out.Results. Positive family history for ACM was revealed in 90% of cases. Every second patient had symptoms of the disease (49,2% (95% confidence interval (CI): 19,3-79,1)). Frequent clinical manifestations of ACM were palpitations, heart failure symptoms, and syncope. The incidence of SCD and sudden cardiac arrest was 7,1% (95% CI: 1,7-12,4) and 5,1% (95% CI: 1,5-8,7), respectively. Implantation of an implantable-cardioverter defibrillator was performed in 40% of cases. Conclusion. We did not reveal any specificity of clinical signs depending on ACM phenotype. However, an earlier onset and an unfavorable course are characteristic of non-classical ACM types. ACM is characterized by a high risk of SCD, so it is extremely important to make a timely diagnosis

Aim. To develop a protocol for diagnosing exercise-induced arrhythmias and conduction disturbances in children aged 3-6 years without structural heart disease.Material and methods. The study included 20 patients (11 boys) aged 58,7±2,12 months with ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and/or atrioventricular (AV) block according to single electrocardiographic (ECG) records and/or 24-hour ECG monitoring. All patients underwent a thorough clinical and paraclinical examination, including exercise stress testing using original and Bruce protocols. The termination criteria were the first of following events: achievement of the heart rate set by the study aim; the appearance and/or aggravation of potentially dangerous arrhythmias and conduction disorders (single premature ventricular contraction (PVCs) with increasing frequency, and/or early PVCs, and/or paired PVCs, and/ or ventricular tachycardia (VT), and/or AV block); registration of allorhythmia (bigeminy) within 10 seconds.Results. The termination criteria using the original protocol were achieved in all patients (n=20, 100%) compared to the standard Bruce protocol (n=5, 25,0%), p<0,001. The number of steps passed was significantly higher using original protocol (5,0 [5,00-6,00]) than when using the standard protocol Bruce 2,0 [2,03,0], p<0,05. Exercise tolerance was significantly higher when using the original protocol than the standard Bruce protocol (p<0,05). The probability of reaching the termination criteria using the original protocol were 116 times greater than using the standard Bruce protocol (odds ratio, 116, 95% confidence interval: 5,932250, p=0,0017). VAs were registered in 20,0% (n=4) of patients using the original protocol, while AV blocks — in 20,0% (n=4). Among the five patients who achieved the termination criteria using the standard Bruce protocol, VAs were recorded in 10,0% (n=2) of patients, while AV blocks — in 5,00% (n=1).Conclusion. The use of exercise test with an original protocol makes it possible to achieve the termination criteria, increases its information content and diagnostic significance. It makes it possible to determine the nature of VAs and AV conduction dosorders
