Rogue waves and mode locking driven by Vector Resonance Multimode instability

    Get PDF
Modulation instabilities discovered more than fifty and hundred fifty years ago created since then a framework for study complexity of different wave phenomena including turbulence and rogue waves. Using Erbium-doped fiber laser without any previously studied mode-locking mechanisms, here for the first time we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically a new type of modulation instability, namely Vector Resonance Multimode Instability, leading to tunability of the laser dynamics from turbulence including rogue waves to the stable pulse train similar to the laser mode-locking regime

Temporal scaling of optical rogue waves in unidirectional ring fiber laser

    Get PDF
A fiber mode-lock laser allows generation of the optical rogue wave (ORW) at different time scales. The criteria for distinguishing between them is a comparison of the event lifetime with the main characteristic time of the system. The characteristic time can be estimated from the decay of an autocorrelation function (AF). Thus, in comparison with AF characteristic time, fast optical rogue wave (FORW) events have duration less than the AF decay time and it appeared due to pulse-pulse interaction and nonlinear pulses dynamics. While slow optical rogue wave (SORW) have a duration much more longer than the decay time of the AF which it papered due to hopping between different attractors. Switching between regimes can be managed by change the artificial birefringence that induced in a laser cavity. For understanding the role playing by the periodical amplification and the resonator, we have performed an unidirectional fiber laser experiments without a saturable absorber. This laser experiment allowed to generate of most of the RW patterns which were either observed experimentally or predicted theoretically. In this way, we have observed the generation of an FORW along with SORW under similar conditions. Most of the patterns were found to be mutually exclusive which means that only one RW mechanism was realized in each regime of generation

The local crystallization in nanoscale diamond-like carbon films during annealing

    Get PDF
The local crystallization during annealing at 600Β° C in nanoscale diamond-like carbon coatings films grown by pulsed vacuum-arc deposition method was observed using modern techniques of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The crystallites formed by annealing have a face-centred cubic crystal structure and grow in the direction [011] as a normal to the film surface. The number and size of the crystallites depend on the initial values of the intrinsic stresses before annealing, which in turn depend on the conditions of film growth. The sizes of crystallites are 10 nm for films with initial compressive stresses of 3 GPa and 17 nm for films with initial compres- sive stresses of 12 GPa. Areas of local crystallization arising during annealing have a structure dif- ferent from the graphit

Studying the issues of recovery of low-potential energy at smallscale energy facilities allowed to show the promising character of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technology as a technology for recovery or conversion of low-potential energy. The most promising developments in the field of the use and recovery of waste heat are described regarding application of ORC, which is widely used in geothermal sources, hot water boilers, gas turbine plants. Due to the constantly growing diversity of working fluids, ORC can be used within a wide temperature range from 100Β°C to over 350Β°C. Also, developments are underway in the design of ORC generators to increase reliability of its individual system units, such as turbines and expanders. Based on the above factors, it can be concluded that with a deeper study of the problems of adopting ORC technologies, they can become a very promising direction in development of heat power engineering. It has been determined that the main factor hindering the widespread adoption of the ORC technology is associated with high cost of heat exchange equipment due to increased heat exchange surfaces. It is shown that design of mini power plants and energy centres based on the use of low-potential energy requires improvement of mathematical modelling methods to reliably determine operating modes and characteristics of each of the units. Methods for modelling evaporation and condensation systems, including turbines and expanders using organic low-boiling working fluids, should be considered among the methods that are highly sought after. The methods for selecting a working fluid for ORC devices also have a significant impact on characteristics of the installation determining the range of cycle operating temperatures and pressures. The solution of the above problems can lead to a reduction in the cost of heat exchange equipment, and, consequently, to a decrease in costs for design of ORC generators.Β Π’ ΡΡ‚Π°Ρ‚ΡŒΠ΅ рассмотрСны вопросы ΡƒΡ‚ΠΈΠ»ΠΈΠ·Π°Ρ†ΠΈΠΈ Π½ΠΈΠ·ΠΊΠΎΠΏΠΎΡ‚Π΅Π½Ρ†ΠΈΠ°Π»ΡŒΠ½Ρ‹Ρ… энСргСтичСских рСсурсов Π½Π° ΠΎΠ±ΡŠΠ΅ΠΊΡ‚Π°Ρ… ΠΌΠ°Π»ΠΎΠΉ энСргСтики. Species composition and distribution of microalgae in the Sukhodol River estuary (Ussury Bay, Peter the Great Bay) in autumn. 1. Phytoplankton

    Get PDF
Species composition and quantitative distribution of phytoplankton in the Sukhodol River estuary were studied in September of 2012. It total, 48 species of diatoms are registered, mostly belonged to microphytobenthos (63 %). The most numerous are mesohaline species and species indifferent to salinity (in sum 69 %). The number of diatoms varied from 5.4 Λ‘ 103 to 866.2 Λ‘ 103 cells/l (on average 138.4 Λ‘ 103 Β± 75.9 Λ‘ 103 cells/l), their biomass varied from 5.0 to 816.8 mg/m3 (on average 199.5 Β± 71.0 mg/m3: 467.8 mg/m3 in the external estuary, 285.4 Β± 117.5 mg/m3 in the deep-water part of the internal estuary, and 42.0 Β± 16.5 mg/m3 on the shallows of the internal estuary). Species composition of phytoplankton is determined by water structure: Dactyliosolen fragilissimus (74 % of biomass) , Skeletonema costatum (15 %) and Coscinodiscus oculus iridis (8 %) are the most abundant in the external estuary where brackish water spreads in the upper layer and salt water occupies the bottom layer; Ulnaria ulna (72 %), Melosira varians (12 %) and Ctenophora pulchella (4 %) are the most abundant in the deep-water part of the internal estuary with almost fresh water in the upper layer and brackish water at the bottom; and Achnanthes lanceolata (22 %), S. costatum (21 %), Rhopalodia musculus (14 %), Pinnularia gibba (6 %), and C. pulchella (5 %) dominate on the shallows of internal estuary with only one water layer occupied by fresh water. Domination of D. fragilissimus and S. costatum indicates a high level of eutrophication in the Sukhodol estuary that presumably is caused by terrigenous biogenic elements supply. The biogenic elements recycled and accumulated in the bottom sediments are dispersed in the estuarine waters by tidal and wind-driven turbulence

Pleiotropic Effect of Salt Stress on Motility and Synthesis of Secreted Ribonucleases by Bacillus pumilus

    Get PDF
Β© 2017, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. Members of the genus Bacillus can successfully counteract a sudden increase in salinity. In addition to the accumulation of osmolytes, saline stress also affects other aspects of bacterial physiology such as exoenzymes synthesis and motility. Here, we have shown that increase of salinity in growth medium leads to elevated biosynthesis level of low-molecular weight ribonuclease (RNase) binase I from Bacillus pumilus. The same effect was established previously for high-molecular weight binase II. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the absence of flagella and some other changes in salt-stressed cells of B. pumilis. We also detected the gene sequences homologous to the recognition sites of response regulator DegU in the binase I and binase II promoters. Using the B. subtilis strains with various mutations in DegU gene, we found that the two-component signal transduction system DegS-DegU which regulates the motility under salt stress participates in the control of biosynthesis for both secreted RNase of B. pumilis (binase I and binase II)
