Improved membranes for the extraction of heavy metals

This work presents a series of experimental tests on new practical approaches in membrane design to improve extraction capacity and rate. We chose an extraction system involving Aliquat 336 as the extractant and Cd(II) as the metal ion to be extracted to demonstrate these new approaches. The core element in the new membrane assembly was the extractant loaded sintered glass filter. This membrane assembly provided a large interface area between the extractant and the aqueous solution containing metal ions. By recycling the aqueous solution through the membrane assembly, the extraction rate was significantly improved. The membrane assembly also offered good extraction capacity

A Comparative Study Between Iraqi and Jordanian EFL Students' Metacognitive Awareness of Listening to Lectures

This study aims to: 1- Identifying postgraduate students' Metacognitive Awareness Listening strategies from the University of Anbar and Jadara University. 2- Identifying the statistically significant differences in postgraduate students' Metacognitive Awareness Listening strategies used in listening to a lecture from the University of Anbar and the Jadara University according to the gender variable. 3- Identifying the statistically significant differences in postgraduate students' Metacognitive Listening strategies Awareness of the University of Anbar and Jadara University according to the type of university. The participants were 26 postgraduate students enrolled in the English language and literature Master's program (in Jadara University – Jordan) and English Literature Master program (in the University of Anbar) during the second semester of the academic year 2021-2022. The Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ), designed by Vandergrift and Tafaghodtari (2006), was adopted to collect the data. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were calculated. The results revealed that the postgraduate students have a high-level awareness of Metacognitive Listening strategies, and there are no significant differences in postgraduate students' awareness of the Metacognitive listening strategies due to the gender and the kind of the university (the specialization of the master's program in Iraq and Jordan).&nbsp

Ceratoluteolin: A new flavonoid from Salvia ceratophylla from Jordan

Ceratoluteolin 1, a new luteolin derivative was isolated from Salvia Ceratophylla growing wild in Jordan along with other 14 known compounds including two sterols, two triterpenes, four flavonoids and six phenolic compounds, one of which is reported for the first time from Lamiaceae family. The isolated compounds were genkwanin-4′-methyl ether 2, β-sitosterol 3, oleanolic acid 4, ursolic acid 5, apigenin 6, β-sitosteryl glucoside 7, p-hydroxyphenyl caffeate 8, caffeic acid 9, shimobashiric acid B 10, methyl rosmarinate 11, butyl rosmarinate 12, luteolin 13, luteolin-7-O-glucoside 14 and rosmarinic acid 15. Complete structural verification of the isolated compounds was achieved by careful inspection of their spectral data including NMR (1D & 2D) and HREIMS

Photo-Fenton Degradation of the Herbicide 2,4-D in Laboratory and Solar Pilot-Plant Reactors

A theoretical and experimental study of a pilot-plant solar reactor for the photo-Fenton degradation of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in aqueous solution is presented. Initially, a kinetic model is proposed to obtain the reaction rates of 2,4-D, the main intermediate (2,4-dichlorophenol), and the hydrogen peroxide. The kinetic study was performed in a well-stirred tank laboratory reactor. The effects of ferric salt initial concentrations, hydrogen peroxide to 2,4-D initial concentration ratios, reaction temperatures, and radiation levels are studied. The proposed kinetic model and the experimental data are used to estimate the kinetic parameters, applying a nonlinear regression procedure. Afterward, the kinetic model is used to predict the reactant concentrations during the photo-Fenton degradation in a pilot-plant solar reactor designed to capture the UV/visible/IR solar radiation. The solar reactor was able to reach a complete degradation of the 2,4-D and 2,4-dichlorophenol after 60 min, and a total organic carbon conversion of 98.9% after 210 min.Fil: Conte, Leandro Oscar.
