Radon and thoron daughter activities in the environment of the King George Island (West Antarctica)

Results of 253 gamma spectrometric analyses of radon daughters in soil and bedrocks of the King George Island (West Antarctica) are presented. Measured values range from 0.1 to 58.4 Bq/kg, and from 4.9 to 75.5 Bq/kg for 214Bi and 208Tl respectively, but most measurements fall in the lower part of this range due to predominantly basaltic character of the geological basement. Obtained gamma spectrometric data correspond well to very low soil gas radon content measured by means of Kodak LR115 being below 454 Bqm-3. Low soil gas radon content and characteristic type of architecture is responsible for low indoor radon activity in Arctowski Station being as low as 10- 15 Bqm-3. The highest 105 Bqm-3 indoor Rn activity has been measured in the greenhouse bungalow of the station. This increased value was probably connected with the presence of about 1000 kg of imported soil material in the greenhouse room of the bungalow. Local zones of increased uranium and thorium content, discovered as a result of radiometric mapping, can potentaily influence atmospheric radon used for meteorological interpretation

The logic of public announcements, common knowledge, and private suspicions

This paper presents a logical system in which various group-level epistemic actions are incorporated into the object language. That is, we consider the standard modeling of knowledge among a set of agents by multi-modal Kripke structures. One might want to consider actions that take place, such as announcements to groups privately, announcements with suspicious outsiders, etc. In our system, such actions correspond to additional modalities in the object language. That is, we do not add machinery on top of models (as in Fagin et alia), but we reify aspects of the machinery in the logical language. Special cases of our logic have been considered in Plaza, Gerbrandy, and Gerbrandy and Groeneveld. The latter group of papers introduce a language in which one can faithfully represent all of the reasoning in examples such as the Muddy Children scenario. In that paper we find operators for updating worlds via announcements to groups of agents who are isolated from all others. We advance this by considering many more actions, and by using a more general semantics. Our logic contains the infinitary operators used in the standard modeling of common knowledge. We present a sound and complete logical system for the logic, and we study its expressive power

Radon in loess cover of SW Poland

The spatial distribution of radionuclides within the loess cover was analysed by radiometric mapping and Rn soil gas measurements. Gamma spectrometric analyses (HPGe) and radon emanation measurements of samples indicate that radionuclides of the Th and U series coexist with K and their mineral system was closed long before loess sedimentation. They occur in plates of potassium mineral, biotite (with radioactive mineral inclusions) blown out from the adjacent hills. The only significant disequilibria are connected with 222Rn migration into soil indicated by excess of 210Pb. The Rn concentration can be explained recalculating the 226Ra content of the loess

Organic Geochemistry and Petrology of Oil Source Rocks, Carpathian Overthrust Region, Southeastern Poland — Implications for Petroleum Generation

The organic matter rich Oligocene Menilite black shales and mudstones are widely distributed in the Carpathian Overthrust region of southeastern Poland and have excellent hydrocarbon generation potential, according to TOC, Rock-Eval, and petrographic data. Extractable organic matter was characterized by an equable distribution of steranes by carbon number, by varying amounts of 28,30-dinor-hopane, 18α(H)-oleanane and by a distinctive group of C24 ring-A degraded triterpanes. The Menilite samples ranged in maturity from pre-generative to mid-oil window levels, with the most mature in the southeastern portion of the study area. Carpathian petroleum samples from Campanian-Oligocene sandstone reservoirs were similar in biomarker composition to the Menilite rock extracts. Similarities in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon distributions between petroleum asphaltene and source rock pyrolyzates provided further evidence genetically linking Menilite kerogens with Carpathian oils

Participatory Climate Research in a Dynamic Urban Context: Activities of the Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN)

The Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN), one of ten NOAA-RISAs, supports resilience efforts in the urban corridor stretching from Philadelphia to Boston. Challenges and opportunities include the diverse set of needs in broad urban contexts, as well as the integration of interdisciplinary perspectives. CCRUN is addressing these challenges through strategies including: 1) the development of an integrated project framework, 2) stakeholder surveys, 3) leveraging extreme weather events as focusing opportunities, and 4) a seminar series that enables scientists and stakeholders to partner. While recognizing that the most extreme weather events will always lead to surprises (even with sound planning), CCRUN endeavors to remain flexible by facilitating place-based research in an interdisciplinary context

Anatomic variability of groin innervation

Inguinal hernia repairs are very common yet fairly complex surgical procedures.Variations in the anatomical course of the inguinal nerves require that diligenceis taken in their proper recognition. Inadvertent surgical injury to these nerves isassociated with long term postoperative pain and complications. The aim of thepresent study was to highlight the complexity and variation in the innervation ofthe inguinal region in order to increase proper nerve identification during surgicalinterventions. Bilateral dissection of the inguinal and posterior abdominal regionsin one human male cadaver revealed an atypical anatomic topography of thegroin innervation. This unusual case was observed at the Jagiellonian UniversityAnatomy Department during routine cadaveric preparations. The left ilioinguinalnerve was absent. The left genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve arose higherthan expected from the lumbar plexus and supplied the groin region, which istypically innervated by the ilioinguinal nerve. Furthermore, the left lateral cutaneousfemoral nerve and the right genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve alsofollowed uncharacteristic courses. Awareness of topographical nerve variationsduring inguinal hernia repair will help surgeons identify and preserve importantnerves, thus decreasing the incidence of chronic postoperative pain
