    Relativistic electrons from sparks in the laboratory

    Discharge experiments were carried out at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2013. The experimental setup was designed to search for electrons produced in meter-scale sparks using a 1 MV Marx generator. Negative voltage was applied to the high voltage (HV) electrode. Five thin (1 mm) plastic detectors (5 cm2\rm cm^2 each) were distributed in various configurations close to the spark gap. Earlier studies have shown (for HV negative) that X-rays are produced when a cloud of streamers is developed 30-60 cm from the negative electrode. This indicates that the electrons producing the X-rays are also accelerated at this location, that could be in the strong electric field from counterstreamers of opposite polarity. Comparing our measurements with modeling results, we find that \sim300 keV electrons produced about 30-60 cm from the negative electrode are the most likely source of our measurements. A statistical analysis of expected detection of photon bursts by these fiber detectors indicates that only 20%-45% of the detected bursts could be from soft (\sim10 keV) photons, which further supports that the majority of detected bursts are produced by relativistic electrons

    Performance comparison of 40 Gb/s ULH transmissions using CSRZ-ASK or CSRZ-DPSK modulation formats on Ultra Wave™ fiber

    In this work we present extensive comparisons between numerical modelling and experimental measurements of the transmission performance of either CSRZ-ASK or CSRZ-DPSK modulation formats for 40-Gb/s WDM ULH systems on UltraWave™ fiber spans with all-Raman amplification. We numerically optimised the amplification and the signal format parameters for both CSRZ-DPSK and CSRZ-ASK formats. Numerical and experimental results show that, in a properly optimized transmission link, the DPSK format permits to double the transmission distance (for a given BER level) with respect to the ASK format, while keeping a substantial OSNR margin (on ASK modulation) after the propagation in the fiber line. Our comparison between numerical and experimental results permits to identify what is the most suitable BER estimator in assessing the transmission performance when using the DPSK format. © 2007 Optical Society of America

    KTM TOKAMAK OPERATION SCENARIOS SOFTWARE INFRASTRUCTURE

    One of the largest problems for tokamak devices such as Kazakhstan Tokamak for Material Testing (KTM) is the operation scenarios' development and execution. Operation scenarios may be varied often, so a convenient hardware and software solution is required for scenario management and execution. Dozens of diagnostic and control subsystems with numerous configuration settings may be used in an experiment, so it is required to automate the subsystem configuration process to coordinate changes of the related settings and to prevent errors. Most of the diagnostic and control subsystems software at KTM was unified using an extra software layer, describing the hardware abstraction interface. The experiment sequence was described using a command language.The whole infrastructure was brought together by a universal communication protocol supporting various media, including Ethernet and serial links.     RNAI-MEDIATED SILENCING OF MATRIX METALLOPROTEINASE 1 IN EPIDERMAL KERATINOCYTES INFLUENCES THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF INTERLEUKIN 17A

    Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important for the pathogenesis of psoriasis and other autoimmune disorders. In the extracellular matrix, accumulation of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin 17A (IL-17A), leads to induction of several MMPs, including MMP1. MMPs change the composition and other properties of the extracellular matrix. These changes facilitate tissue remodeling and promote the development of psoriatic plaques. The aim of this study was to explore how MMP1 silencing might influence the biological effects of IL-17A on migration and proliferation of human epidermal keratinocytes and the expression of genes involved in their division and differentiation. The experiments were performed with MMP1-deficient and control epidermal keratinocytes, HaCaT-MMP1 and HaCaT-KTR, respectively. Cell proliferation and migration were assessed by comparative analysis of the growth curves and scratch assay, respectively. To quantify cell migration, representative areas of cell cultures were photographed at the indicated time points and compared to each other. Changes in gene expression were analyzed by real-time PCR. The obtained results demonstrated that MMP1 silencing in the cells treated with IL-17A resulted in downregulation of MMP9 and -12, FOSL1, CCNA2, IVL, KRT14 and -17 as well as upregulation of MMP2, CCND1 and LOR. Moreover, MMP1 silencing led to a decrease in cell proliferation and an impairment of cell migration. Thus, MMP1-deficiency in epidermal keratinocytes can be beneficial for psoriasis patients that experience an accumulation of IL-17 in lesional skin. Knocking MMP1 down could influence migration and proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes in vivo, as well as help to control the expression of MMP1, -2, -9 и -12, CCNA2, CCND1, KRT14 and -17 that are crucial for the pathogenesis of psoriasis

    В работе с помощью дифференциального уравнения моделируется падение в воздухе испаряющейся капли жидкости при двух различных предположениях относительно силы сопротивления воздуха. В первом случае предполагается, что сила сопротивления пропорциональна скорости движения капли, во втором предполагается, что сила сопротивления пропорциональна произведению скорости и площади поверхности капли. С использованием пакета Mathcad проводится сравнение полученных решений и анализ особенностей в аналитических выражениях при различных соотношениях между скоростью испарения и коэффициентом пропорциональности для силы сопротивления.In this paper, a differential equation is used to model the fall of an evaporating liquid drop in the air under two different assumptions about the air resistance force. In the first case it is assumed that the resistance force is proportional to the speed drops, the second it is assumed that the resistance force is proportional to the product of speed and surface area of the droplet. Using the Mathcad package, the obtained solutions are compared and the features are analyzed in analytical expressions for different relations between the evaporation rate and the coefficient of proportionality for the resistance force

    An algorithm and a program  have been developed for calculation of temperature mode in a T-72 tank tower while using numerical methods. The paper reveals a satisfactory convergence of calculated and experimental data. The results pertaining to investigation of influence of various factors on the processes of temperature mode formation in the internal surfaces of the studied object are presented in the paper. The obtained results make it possible to develop technical solutions in respect of protection against condensation of water vapor on the internal surfaces of armored machinery.С использованием численных методов разработаны алгоритм и программа расчета температурного режима башни танка Т-72. Показана удовлетворительная сходимость расчетных и экспериментальных данных. Приведены результаты исследования влияния различных факторов на процессы формирования температурного режима внутренних поверхностей исследуемого объекта. Полученные результаты позволяют разработать технические решения по защите от конденсации водяных паров на внутренних поверхностях образцов БТВ

    Self-trapping and stable localized modes in nonlinear photonic crystals

    We predict the existence of stable nonlinear localized modes near the band edge of a two-dimensional reduced-symmetry photonic crystal with a Kerr nonlinearity.     Pathomorphological and pathochemical characteristic of the osteomyelitis focus in patients with diabetic osteoarthropathy (Charcot foot)

    BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis in diabetic osteoarthropathy occurs in 65 % of cases, and it is the main cause of non-traumatic amputations. The choice of optimal treatment technologies should be based on understanding the pathogenetic characteristics of this disease.AIM: To study the pathomorphological and pathochemical picture of osteomyelitic focus in patients with diabetic neuroosteoarthropathy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Object — 20 patients (55.3±9.33 years) with Type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic neuroosteoarthropathy, chronic osteomyelitis of the foot bones. The treatment consisted in surgical debridement of the purulent focus with the material collection for pathomorphological and biochemical studies, and in reposition and alignment of bone fragments with the leg and foot fixation using the Ilizarov fixator in order to form bone ankylosis of the compromised joint.RESULTS: Subacute and acute course of chronic osteomyelitis was registered in 80 % of cases. As for the pathohistological changes in bone tissue, the following ones were the most significant: necrosis and the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate of varying severity depending on the phase of the inflammatory process. The articular cartilage structure was broken in all the cases. Activation of osteoclasts was observed in the osteomyelitis focus, especially in the subchondral zone. There was no subchondral bone plate in most cases, or only its fragments remained. Pathohistological examination of the soft tissues associated with the osteomyelitis focus indicated the presence of mirocirculatory and denervation disorders due to necrosis and hyalinosis of a significant part of microvessels against the background of compensatory hypervascularisation and chronic inflammation, narrowing and obliteration of the lumens of feeding arteries, almost complete absence of nerve elements in the tissues or their destructive changes. An increase in the activity of lytic enzymes was revealed in the interstitial environment of the tissues surrounding the osteomyelitis focus (138-fold increase in the activity of acid phosphatase, interstitial osteolytic index was 7.2-fold higher than blood serum index).CONCLUSION: The pathomorphological signs of chronic osteomyelitis subacute and acute processing were observed in most patients. Breaking the articular cartilage structure was accompanied by invasion of vessels, inflammatory infiltrate, and by activation of osteoclasts in the subchondral zone. Destructive changes of vessels and nerves in the soft tissues associated with the osteomyelitis focus can be etiopathogenetic factors of this disease development. The technologies for stopping this process should be based on obligatory debridement of the focus with sequestrnecrectomy, with regular monitoring of the operated segment condition

    Experimental demonstration of mode structure in ultralong Raman fiber lasers

    We present the first experimental demonstration of a resolvable mode structure with spacing c/2nL in the RF spectra of ultralong Raman fiber lasers. The longest ever demonstrated laser cavity (L=84km), RF peaks of ∼100 Hz width and spacing ∼1 kHz have been observed at low intracavity powers. The width of the peaks increases linearly with growing intracavity power and is almost independent of fiber length. © 2007 Optical Society of America
