Group B Streptococcus Meningitis Following Elective Termination of Pregnancy: Two Case Reports
Background: Although maternal group B streptococcus (GBS) infections are common, serious
infections are rare with prompt diagnosis and treatment. We present 2 cases of GBS meningitis
occurring 3 and 10 days after elective abortion. In the first patient, GBS meningitis was definitely
related to the elective termination. In the second patient, however, no evidence for a causal relationship
could be established and can only be presumed
Semi-Markov adjunction to the Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME)
The rule-based Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME) program was expanded in its ability to incorporate the effect of fault-handling processes into the construction of a reliability model. The fault-handling processes are modeled as semi-Markov events and CAME constructs and appropriate semi-Markov model. To solve the model, the program outputs it in a form which can be directly solved with the Semi-Markov Unreliability Range Evaluator (SURE) program. As a means of evaluating the alterations made to the CAME program, the program is used to model the reliability of portions of the Integrated Airframe/Propulsion Control System Architecture (IAPSA 2) reference configuration. The reliability predictions are compared with a previous analysis. The results bear out the feasibility of utilizing CAME to generate appropriate semi-Markov models to model fault-handling processes
Shared decision making in consultations for hypertension:Qualitative study in general practice
Abstract Background Hypertension is mainly managed in primary care. Shared decision making is widely recommended as an approach to treatment decision making. However, no studies have investigated; in detail, what happens during primary care consultations for hypertension. Aim To understand patientsâ and cliniciansâ experience of shared decision making for hypertension in primary care, in order to propose how it might be better supported. Design Longitudinal qualitative study. Setting Five general practices in southâwest England. Method Interviews with a purposive sample of patients with hypertension, and with the healthâcare practitioners they consulted, along with observations of clinical consultations, for up to 6 appointments. Interviews and consultations were audioârecorded and observational field notes taken. Data were analysed thematically. Results Fortyâsix interviews and 18 consultations were observed, with 11 patients and nine healthâcare practitioners (five GPs, one pharmacist and three nurses). Little shared decision making was described by participants or observed. Often patientsâ understanding of their hypertension was limited, and they were not aware there were treatment choices. Consultations provided few opportunities for patients and clinicians to reach a shared understanding of their treatment choices. Opportunities for patients to engage in choices were limited by structured consultations and the distribution of decisions across consultations. Conclusion For shared decision making to be better supported, consultations need to provide opportunities for patients to learn about their condition, to understand that there are treatment choices, and to discuss these choices with clinicians. Fail-Safe Controller Architectures for Quadcopter with Motor Failures
A fail-safe algorithm in case of motor failure was developed, simulated, and
tested. For practical fail-safe flight, the quadcopter may fly with only three
or two opposing propellers. Altitude for two-propeller architecture was
maintained by a PID controller that is independent from the inner and outer
controllers. A PID controller on propeller force deviations from equilibrium
was augmented to the inner controller of the three-propeller architecture. Both
architectures used LQR for the inner attitude controller and a damped second
order outer controller that zeroes the error along the horizontal coordinates.
The restrictiveness, stability, robustness, and symmetry of these architectures
were investigated with respect to their output limits, initial conditions, and
controller frequencies. Although the three-propeller architecture allows for
distribution of propeller forces, the two-propeller architecture is more
efficient, robust, and stable. The two-propeller architecture is also robust to
model uncertainties. It was shown that higher yaw rate leads to greater
stability when operating in fail-safe mode.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, published in the 2020 6th International

The devices, experimental scaffolds, and biomaterials ontology (DEB): a tool for mapping, annotation, and analysis of biomaterials' data
The size and complexity of the biomaterials literature makes systematic data analysis an excruciating manual task. A practical solution is creating databases and information resources. Implant design and biomaterials research can greatly benefit from an open database for systematic data retrieval. Ontologies are pivotal to knowledge base creation, serving to represent and organize domain knowledge. To name but two examples, GO, the gene ontology, and CheBI, Chemical Entities of Biological Interest ontology and their associated databases are central resources to their respective research communities. The creation of the devices, experimental scaffolds, and biomaterials ontology (DEB), an open resource for organizing information about biomaterials, their design, manufacture, and biological testing, is described. It is developed using text analysis for identifying ontology terms from a biomaterials gold standard corpus, systematically curated to represent the domain's lexicon. Topics covered are validated by members of the biomaterials research community. The ontology may be used for searching terms, performing annotations for machine learning applications, standardized meta-data indexing, and other cross-disciplinary data exploitation. The input of the biomaterials community to this effort to create data-driven open-access research tools is encouraged and welcomed.Preprin

Granular clustering in a hydrodynamic simulation
We present a numerical simulation of a granular material using hydrodynamic
equations. We show that, in the absence of external forces, such a system
phase-separates into high density and low density regions. We show that this
separation is dependent on the inelasticity of collisions, and comment on the
mechanism for this clustering behavior. Our results are compatible with the
granular clustering seen in experiments and molecular dynamic simulations of
inelastic hard disks.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
