Performance limitations of subband adaptive filters
In this paper, we evaluate the performance limitations of subband adaptive filters in terms of achievable final error terms. The limiting factors are the aliasing level in the subbands, which poses a distortion and thus presents a lower bound for the minimum mean squared error in each subband, and the distortion function of the overall filter bank, which in a system identification setup restricts the accuracy of the equivalent fullband model. Using a generalized DFT modulated filter bank for the subband decomposition, both errors can be stated in terms of the underlying prototype filter. If a source model for coloured input signals is available, it is also possible to calculate the power spectral densities in both subbands and reconstructed fullband. Development of the microbiological population in water miscible metal working fluids
The deterioration of metal working fluids (MWFs) due to the microbial colonization
and degradation is a considerable economic factor in the metal working industry.
Microorganisms (MO) are able to metabolize almost all components of MWFs and
thus lead to a loss of its function by the reduction or depletion of additives. Microbial
growth cannot be avoided completely, although various methods exist to reduce the
bacterial load in MWFs. This paper presents a study on the colonization of MWFs by
bacteria and fungi in an industrial environment. The cooling lubricants have been
periodically examined based on biological and chemical methods. The level of the
total bacterial load in the lubricant is considered as well as the composition of the
species community and its development over the evaluation period. With regard to
the increasing relevance of environment friendly processes, a conventional mineral
oil based MWF has been compared to a product based on renewable resources
Determination of the primary structure and carboxyl pKAs of heparin-derived oligosaccharides by band-selective homonuclear-decoupled two-dimensional 1H NMR
Determination of the structure of heparin-derived oligosaccharides by 1H NMR is challenging because resonances for all but the anomeric protons cover less than 2 ppm. By taking advantage of increased dispersion of resonances for the anomeric H1 protons at low pD and the superior resolution of band-selective, homonuclear-decoupled (BASHD) two-dimensional 1H NMR, the primary structure of the heparin-derived octasaccharide âUA(2S)-[(1âââ4)-GlcNS(6S)-(1âââ4)-IdoA(2S)-]3-(1âââ4)-GlcNS(6S) has been determined, where âUA(2S) is 2-O-sulfated â4,5-unsaturated uronic acid, GlcNS(6S) is 6-O-sulfated, N-sulfated ÎČ-d-glucosamine and IdoA(2S) is 2-O-sulfated α-l-iduronic acid. The spectrum was assigned, and the sites of N- and O-sulfation and the conformation of each uronic acid residue were established, with chemical shift data obtained from BASHD-TOCSY spectra, while the sequence of the monosaccharide residues in the octasaccharide was determined from inter-residue NOEs in BASHD-NOESY spectra. Acid dissociation constants were determined for each carboxylic acid group of the octasaccharide, as well as for related tetra- and hexasaccharides, from chemical shiftâpD titration curves. Chemical shiftâpD titration curves were obtained for each carboxylic acid group from sub-spectra taken from BASHD-TOCSY spectra that were measured as a function of pD. The pKAs of the carboxylic acid groups of the âUA(2S) residues are less than those of the IdoA(2S) residues, and the pKAs of the carboxylic acid groups of the IdoA(2S) residues for a given oligosaccharide are similar in magnitude. Relative acidities of the carboxylic acid groups of each oligosaccharide were calculated from chemical shift data by a pH-independent method
Decoherence of a two-qubit system with a variable bath coupling operator
We examine the decoherence of an asymmetric two-qubit system that is coupled
via a tunable interaction term to a common bath or two individual baths of
harmonic oscillators. The dissipative dynamics are evaluated using the
Bloch-Redfield formalism. It is shown that the behaviour of the decoherence
effects is affected mostly by different symmetries between the qubit operator
which is coupled to the environment and temperature, whereas the differences
between the two bath configurations are very small. Moreover, it is elaborated
that small imperfections of the qubit parameters do not lead to a drastic
enhancement of the decoherence rates.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Reheating in the Presence of Inhomogeneous Noise
Explosive particle production due to parametric resonance is a crucial
feature of reheating in an inflationary cosmology. Coherent oscillations of the
inflaton field lead to a periodically varying mass in the evolution equation of
matter and gravitational fluctuations and often induce a parametric resonance
instability. In a previous paper (hep-ph/9709273) it was shown that homogeneous
(i.e. space independent) noise leads to an increase of the generalized Floquet
exponent for all modes, at least if the noise is temporally uncorrelated. Here
we extend the results to the physically more realistic case of spatially
inhomogeneous noise. We demonstrate - modulo some mathematical fine points
which are addressed in a companion paper - that the Floquet exponent is a non-
decreasing function of the amplitude of the noise. We provide numerical
evidence for an even stronger statement, namely that in the presence of
inhomogeneous noise, the Floquet exponent of each mode is larger than the
maximal Floquet exponent of the system in the absence of noise.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Sea-ice information and forecast needs for industry maritime stakeholders
Profound changes in Arctic sea-ice, a growing desire to utilize the Arcticâs abundant natural resources, and the potential competitiveness of Arctic shipping routes, all provide for increased industry marine activity throughout the Arctic Ocean. This is anticipated to result in further challenges for maritime safety. Those operating in ice-infested waters require various types of information for sea-ice and iceberg hazards. Ice information requirements depend on regional needs and whether the stakeholder wants to avoid ice all together, operate near or in the Marginal Ice Zone, or areas within the ice pack. An insight into user needs demonstrates how multiple spatial and temporal resolutions for sea-ice information and forecasts are necessary to provide information to the marine operating community for safety, planning, and situational awareness. Although ship-operators depend on sea-ice information for tactical navigation, stakeholders working in route and capacity planning can benefit from climatological and long-range forecast information at lower spatial and temporal resolutions where the interest is focused on open-water season. The advent of the Polar Code has brought with it additional information requirements, and exposed gaps in capacity and knowledge. Thus, future satellite data sources should be at resolutions that support both tactical and planning activities
The Experiences of Autistic Doctors: A Cross-Sectional Study
Introduction: Medicine may select for autistic characteristics. As awareness and diagnosis of autism are growing, more medical students and doctors may be discovering they are autistic. No studies have explored the experiences of autistic doctors. This study aimed to fill that gap.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. A participatory approach was used to identify the need for the project and to modify a pre-existing survey for use exploring the experiences of autistic doctors.
Results: We received 225 responses. 64% had a formal diagnosis of autism. The mean age of receiving a formal diagnosis was 36 (range 3â61). Most were currently working as doctors (82%). The most common specialties were general practice / family medicine (31%), psychiatry (18%), and anesthesia (11%). Almost half of those working had completed specialty training (46%) and 40% were current trainees. 29% had not disclosed being autistic to anyone at work. 46% had requested adjustments in the workplace but of these, only half had them implemented.
Three quarters had considered suicide (77%), one quarter had attempted suicide (24%) and half had engaged in self-harm (49%). 80% reported having worked with another doctor they suspected was autistic, but only 22% reported having worked with another doctor they knew was autistic. Having never worked with a potentially autistic colleague was associated with having considered suicide.
Most preferred to be called âautistic doctorsâ (64%). Most considered autism to be a difference (83%). Considering autism to be a disorder was associated with preference for the term âdoctors with autism,â and with having attempted suicide.
Conclusion: Autistic doctors reported many challenges in the workplace. This may have contributed to a culture of nondisclosure. Mental health was poor with high rates of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and prior suicide attempts. Despite inhospitable environments, most were persevering and working successfully. Viewing autism as a disorder was associated with prior suicide attempts and a preference for person-first language. A neurodiversity-affirmative approach to autism may lead to a more positive self-identity and improved mental health. Furthermore, providing adequate supports and improving awareness of autistic medical professionals may promote inclusion in the medical workforce
Pancreatitis with an unusual fatal complication following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography has been the treatment of choice for stones in the common bile duct. Although the procedure is usually safe, procedure-related complications do occur.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A case of pancreatitis following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography is described in a 55-year-old woman. After an uneventful recovery the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly 16 days after the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography, and the patient died within 1 hour. Post-mortem examination revealed massive intrapulmonary fat embolism. The complications of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography and pancreatitis are described.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Fat embolism can occur after the remission of pancreatitis and pancreatic necrosis may be overlooked on contrast-enhanced computed tomography scanning.</p
