Face Off: An Examination of State Biometric Privacy Statutes & Data Harm Remedies
As biometric authentication becomes an increasingly popular method of security among consumers, only three states currently have statutes detailing how such data may be collected, used, retained, and released. The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act is the only statute of the three that enshrines a private right of action for those who fail to properly handle biometric data. Both the Texas Capture or Use Biometric Identifier Act Information Act and the Washington Biometric Privacy Act allow for state Attorneys General to bring suit on behalf of aggrieved consumers. This Note examines these three statutes in the context of data security and potential remedies for victims of data breaches or mishandled data. Ultimately, this Note makes policy proposals for future biometric privacy statutes, particularly recommending a private right of action as the most effective remedy for victims of biometric data breaches
Non-supersymmetric Orientifolds of Gepner Models
Starting from a previously collected set of tachyon-free closed strings, we
search for N=2 minimal model orientifold spectra which contain the standard
model and are free of tachyons and tadpoles at lowest order. For each class of
tachyon-free closed strings -- bulk supersymmetry, automorphism invariants or
Klein bottle projection -- we do indeed find non-supersymmetric and tachyon
free chiral brane configurations that contain the standard model. However, a
tadpole-cancelling hidden sector could only be found in the case of bulk
supersymmetry. Although about half of the examples we have found make use of
branes that break the bulk space-time supersymmetry, the resulting massless
open string spectra are nevertheless supersymmetric in all cases. Dropping the
requirement that the standard model be contained in the spectrum, we find
chiral tachyon and tadpole-free solutions in all three cases, although in the
case of bulk supersymmetry all massless spectra are supersymmetric. In the
other two cases we find truly non-supersymmetric spectra, but a large fraction
of them are nevertheless partly or fully supersymmetric at the massless level.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Classification of Simple Current Invariants
We summarize recent work on the classification of modular invariant partition
functions that can be obtained with simple currents in theories with a center
(Z_p)^k with p prime. New empirical results for other centers are also
presented. Our observation that the total number of invariants is
monodromy-independent for (Z_p)^k appears to be true in general as well. (Talk

Minimal Models from W-Constrained Hierarchies via the Kontsevich-Miwa Transform
A direct relation between the conformal formalism for 2d-quantum gravity and
the W-constrained KP hierarchy is found, without the need to invoke
intermediate matrix model technology. The Kontsevich-Miwa transform of the KP
hierarchy is used to establish an identification between W constraints on the
KP tau function and decoupling equations corresponding to Virasoro null
vectors. The Kontsevich-Miwa transform maps the -constrained KP
hierarchy to the minimal model, with the tau function being
given by the correlator of a product of (dressed) (or )
operators, provided the Miwa parameter and the free parameter (an
abstract spin) present in the constraints are expressed through the ratio

A fifty year record of winter glacier melt events in southern Chile, 38°–42°S
Little is known about the frequency and potential mass balance impact of winter glacier melt events. In this study, daily atmospheric temperature soundings from the Puerto Montt radiosonde (41.43°S) are used to reconstruct winter melting events at the glacier equilibrium line altitude in the 38°–42°S region of southern Chile, between 1960 and 2010. The representativeness of the radiosonde temperatures to near-surface glacier temperatures is demonstrated using meteorological records from close to the equilibrium line on two glaciers in the region over five winters. Using a degree-day model we estimate an average of 0.28 m of melt and 21 melt days in the 15 June–15 September period each year, with high inter-annual variability. The majority of melt events are associated with midlatitude migratory high pressure systems crossing Chile and northwesterly flows, that force adiabatic compression and warm advection, respectively. There are no trends in the frequency or magnitude of melt events over the period of record, but the annual frequency of winter melt days shows a significant, although rather weak and probably non-linear, relationship to late winter and early spring values of a multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation Index (MEI)
Latino Definitions of Success: A Cultural Model of Intercultural Competence
The present study sought to examine Latino intercultural competence via two separate methodologies. Phase 1 entailed discovering and generating themes regarding the features of intercultural competence based on semistructured interviews of 15 Latino adults. Phase 2 included conducting a cultural consensus analysis from the quantitative responses of 46 Latino adults to determine the cultural model of intercultural competence. The major results indicated that the participants, despite variations in socioeconomic and generational statuses, shared a common knowledge base regarding the competencies needed for Latinos to successfully navigate different cultures. Overall, the cultural model of Latino intercultural competence includes a set of skills that integrates traditional cultural values along with attributes of self-efficacy. The findings are discussed within a competence-based conceptualization of cultural adaptation and potential advancements in acculturation research
