Rotating Solution of Einstein-Maxwell Dilaton Gravity with Unusual Asymptotics
We study electrically charged, dilaton black holes, which possess
infinitesimal angular momentum in the presence of one or two Liouville type
potentials. These solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de
Sitter. Some properties of the solutions are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, Accepted (Int. J. Theor. Phys.
Charged Nariai Black Holes With a Dilaton
The Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes of standard Einstein-Maxwell
theory with a cosmological constant have no analogue in dilatonic theories with
a Liouville potential. The only exception are the solutions of maximal mass,
the Charged Nariai solutions. We show that the structure of the solution space
of the Dilatonic Charged Nariai black holes is quite different from the
non-dilatonic case. Its dimensionality depends on the exponential coupling
constants of the dilaton. We discuss the possibility of pair creating such
black holes on a suitable background. We find conditions for the existence of
Charged Nariai solutions in theories with general dilaton potentials, and
consider specifically a massive dilaton.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Clearance of the mutant androgen receptor in motoneuronal models of spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy.
Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an X-linked motoneuron disease caused by an abnormal expansion of a tandem CAG repeat in exon 1 of the androgen receptor (AR) gene that results in an abnormally long polyglutamine tract (polyQ) in the AR protein. As a result, the mutant AR (ARpolyQ) misfolds, forming cytoplasmic and nuclear aggregates in the affected neurons. Neurotoxicity only appears to be associated with the formation of nuclear aggregates. Thus, improved ARpolyQ cytoplasmic clearance, which indirectly decreases ARpolyQ nuclear accumulation, has beneficial effects on affected motoneurons. In addition, increased ARpolyQ clearance contributes to maintenance of motoneuron proteostasis and viability, preventing the blockage of the proteasome and autophagy pathways that might play a role in the neuropathy in SBMA. The expression of heat shock protein B8 (HspB8), a member of the small heat shock protein family, is highly induced in surviving motoneurons of patients affected by motoneuron diseases, where it seems to participate in the stress response aimed at cell protection. We report here that HspB8 facilitates the autophagic removal of misfolded aggregating species of ARpolyQ. In addition, though HspB8 does not influence p62 and LC3 (two key autophagic molecules) expression, it does prevent p62 bodies formation, and restores the normal autophagic flux in these cells. Interestingly, trehalose, a well-known autophagy stimulator, induces HspB8 expression, suggesting that HspB8 might act as one of the molecular mediators of the proautophagic activity of trehalose. Collectively, these data support the hypothesis that treatments aimed at restoring a normal autophagic flux that result in the more efficient clearance of mutant ARpolyQ might produce beneficial effects in SBMA patients
Curvature-corrected dilatonic black holes and black hole -- string transition
We investigate extremal charged black hole solutions in the four-dimensional
string frame Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the Maxwell field and the dilaton.
Without curvature corrections, the extremal electrically charged dilatonic
black holes have singular horizon and zero Bekenstein entropy. When the
Gauss-Bonnet term is switched on, the horizon radius expands to a finite value
provided curvature corrections are strong enough. Below a certain threshold
value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling the extremal black hole solutions cease to
exist. Since decreasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling corresponds to decreasing string
coupling , the situation can tentatively be interpreted as classical
indication on the black hole -- string transition. Previously the extremal
dilaton black holes were studied in the Einstein-frame version of the
Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Here we work in the string frame version of this theory
with the S-duality symmetric dilaton function as required by the heterotic
string theory.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
New hairy black hole solutions with a dilaton potential
We consider black hole solutions with a dilaton field possessing a nontrivial
potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. The asymptotic
behaviour of the dilaton field is assumed to be slower than that of a localized
distribution of matter. A nonabelian SU(2) gauge field is also included in the
total action. The mass of the solutions admitting a power series expansion in
at infinity and preserving the asymptotic anti-de Sitter geometry is
computed by using a counterterm subtraction method. Numerical arguments are
presented for the existence of hairy black hole solutions for a dilaton
potential of the form , special attention being paid to the case of
gauged supergravity model of Gates and Zwiebach.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; v2:references added, typos corrected, small

Pair Creation of Dilaton Black Holes in Extended Inflation
Dilatonic Charged Nariai instantons mediate the nucleation of black hole
pairs during extended chaotic inflation. Depending on the dilaton and inflaton
fields, the black holes are described by one of two approximations in the
Lorentzian regime. For each case we find Euclidean solutions that satisfy the
no boundary proposal. The complex initial values of the dilaton and inflaton
are determined, and the pair creation rate is calculated from the Euclidean
action. Similar to standard inflation, black holes are abundantly produced near
the Planck boundary, but highly suppressed later on. An unusual feature we find
is that the earlier in inflation that the dilatonic black holes are created,
the more highly charged they can be.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Comparison of organ doses and image quality between CT and flat panel XperCT scans in wrist and inner ear examinations
The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare organ doses delivered to patients in wrist and petrous bone examinations using a multislice spiral computed tomography (CT) and a C-arm cone-beam CT equipped with a flat-panel detector (XperCT). For this purpose, doses to the target organ, i.e. wrist or petrous bone, together with those to the most radiosensitive nearby organs, i.e. thyroid and eye lens, were measured and compared. Furthermore, image quality was compared for both imaging systems and different acquisition modes using a Catphan phantom. Results show that both systems guarantee adequate accuracy for diagnostic purposes for wrist and petrous bone examinations. Compared with the CT scanner, the XperCT system slightly reduces the dose to target organs and shortens the overall duration of the wrist examination. In addition, using the XperCT enables a reduction of the dose to the eye lens during head scans (skull base and ear examinations
