accordance with the dictum that truth is stranger than fiction, we will see
that it is possible to find a situation in special relativity where running
towards one's target is actually counter-productive. Although the situation is
easily analysed algebraically, the qualitative properties of the analysis are

The effect of microstructure and strength on the fracture toughness of an 18 Ni, 300 grade maraging steel
Fractography and metallographic sectioning were used to investigate the influence of microstructure and strength on the fracture toughness (KIc) and fracture mechanism of an 18 Ni, 300 grade maraging steel. Increased yield strength from 1442 to 2070 MN/m squared through precipitation hardening results in a KIc loss from 143 to 55 MN/m superscript 3/2. Ti (C,N) Ti2S, and TiC inclusions in sizes from 1 to 8, 1 to 15, and 0.1 to 2 microns respectively serve as sites for void nucleation and lead to fracture by the dimpled rupture process in all strength levels considered. TiC nucleated dimples occupy more than half the fracture in all conditions. Void nucleation rate and resultant number of dimples per unit area of fracture increase with increasing yield strength. Average dimple size decreases with increasing strength and/or overaging which follows from the decreasing amount of stable void growth measured by sectioning tensile specimens. Void growth is assisted by crack branching along a path of TiC inclusions. Coalescence occurs in the highest strength materials by a combination of TiC void nucleation and premature separation at strengthening precipitates
The effect of microstructure and strength on the fracture toughness of an 18 Ni, 300 grade maraging steel
A 300 grade maraging steel was chosen as a vehicle by which to understand the inverse relationship between strength and toughness in high strength alloys such as the 18 Ni maraging steels. The 18 Ni, 300 grade maraging material was a commercial grade consumable-electrode, vacuum arc remelted heat obtained in the form of forged and annealed plate. The matrix contained a population of second-phase impurity inclusions which was a product of the casting and hot working processes. These inclusions did not change with subsequent precipitation hardening. Changes in microstructure resulting in strength increases were brought about by variations in aging temperature and time. Maximum strength was attained in the 300 grade maraging steel by aging at 427 C (800 F) for 100 hours. Tensile, fatigue precracked Charpy impact, and plane-strain fracture toughness tests were performed at room temperature, 20 C (68 F). With increasing strength the fracture toughness decreases as smaller and smaller inclusions act as sites for void initiation

cuts . In the elastic case it reduces to N functions
connected by the crossing symmetry matrix A. The scattering of
a neutral pseodoscalar meson with an arbitrary angular momentum l at a source
with spin 1/2 is considered (N=2). The Regge trajectories of this model are

Corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure due to deuteron excitations
We consider the corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure originating from
the two-photon exchange between electron and deuteron, with the deuteron
excitations in the intermediate states. In particular, the motion of the two
intermediate nucleons as a whole is taken into account. The problem is solved
in the zero-range approximation. The result is in good agreement with the
experimental value of the deuterium hyperfine splitting.Comment: 7 pages, LaTe
Successful completion of a cyclic ground test of a mercury ion auxiliary propulsion system
An engineering model Ion Auxiliary Propulsion System (IAPS) 8-cm thruster (S/N 905) has completed a life test at NASA Lewis Research Center. The mercury ion thruster successfully completed and exceeded the test goals of 2557 on/off cycles and 7057 hr of operation at full thrust. The final 1200 cycles and 3600 hr of the life test were conducted using an engineering model of the IAPS power electronics unit (PEU) and breadboard digital controller and interface unit (DCIU). This portion of the test is described in this paper with a charted history of thruster operating parameters and off-normal events. Performance and operating characteristics were constant throughout the test with only minor variations. The engineering model power electronics unit operated without malfunction; the flight software in the digital controller and interface unit was exercised and verified. Post-test inspection of the thruster revealed facility enhanced accelerator grid erosion but overall the thruster was in good condition. It was concluded that the thruster performance was not drastically degraded by time or cycles. Additional cyclic testing is currently under consideration
