The effects of passing speed distribution on rail corrugation growth rate
The transportation phenomenon known as wear-type rail corrugation is a significant problem in railway engineering, which manifests as a periodic wear pattern developing on the surface of the wheel and rail with use. Some field studies and recent theoretical results by the current authors have suggested that uniformity in pass speed causes an increase in corrugation growth rate. This paper presents the predicted change in corrugation growth rate and dominant wavelengths with change in passing speed distribution, based on state of the art cornering growth modelling techniques
Self-similar Bianchi models: I. Class A models
We present a study of Bianchi class A tilted cosmological models admitting a
proper homothetic vector field together with the restrictions, both at the
geometrical and dynamical level, imposed by the existence of the simply
transitive similarity group. The general solution of the symmetry equations and
the form of the homothetic vector field are given in terms of a set of
arbitrary integration constants. We apply the geometrical results for tilted
perfect fluids sources and give the general Bianchi II self-similar solution
and the form of the similarity vector field. In addition we show that
self-similar perfect fluid Bianchi VII models and irrotational Bianchi

Inventory of molecular markers affecting biological characteristics of avian influenza A viruses
Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) circulate globally, spilling over into domestic poultry and causing zoonotic infections in humans. Fortunately, AIVs are not yet capable of causing sustained human-to-human infection; however, AIVs are still a high risk as future pandemic strains, especially if they acquire further mutations that facilitate human infection and/or increase pathogenesis. Molecular characterization of sequencing data for known genetic markers associated with AIV adaptation, transmission, and antiviral resistance allows for fast, efficient assessment of AIV risk. Here we summarize and update the current knowledge on experimentally verified molecular markers involved in AIV pathogenicity, receptor binding, replicative capacity, and transmission in both poultry and mammals with a broad focus to include data available on other AIV subtypes outside of A/H5N1 and A/H7N9
Equivalence problem for the orthogonal webs on the sphere
We solve the equivalence problem for the orthogonally separable webs on the
three-sphere under the action of the isometry group. This continues a classical
project initiated by Olevsky in which he solved the corresponding canonical
forms problem. The solution to the equivalence problem together with the
results by Olevsky forms a complete solution to the problem of orthogonal
separation of variables to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation defined on the
three-sphere via orthogonal separation of variables. It is based on invariant
properties of the characteristic Killing two-tensors in addition to properties
of the corresponding algebraic curvature tensor and the associated Ricci
tensor. The result is illustrated by a non-trivial application to a natural
Hamiltonian defined on the three-sphere.Comment: 32 page

Magneto-dilatonic Bianchi-I cosmology: isotropization and singularity problems
We study the evolution of Bianchi-I space-times filled with a global
unidirectional electromagnetic field interacting with a massless
scalar dilatonic field according to the law \Psi(\phi) F^{mn} F_{mn} where
\Psi(\phi) > 0 is an arbitrary function. A qualitative study, among other
results, shows that (i) the volume factor always evolves monotonically, (ii)
there exist models becoming isotropic at late times and (iii) the expansion
generically starts from a singularity but there can be special models starting
from a Killing horizon preceded by a static stage. All these features are
confirmed for exact solutions found for the usually considered case \Psi =
e^{2\lambda\phi}, \lambda = const. In particular, isotropizing models are found
for |\lambda| > 1/\sqrt{3}. In the special case |\lambda| = 1, which
corresponds to models of string origin, the string metric behaviour is studied
and shown to be qualitatively similar to that of the Einstein frame metric.Comment: Latex2e, 10 page
The late-time behaviour of vortic Bianchi type VIII Universes
We use the dynamical systems approach to investigate the Bianchi type VIII
models with a tilted -law perfect fluid. We introduce
expansion-normalised variables and investigate the late-time asymptotic
behaviour of the models and determine the late-time asymptotic states. For the
Bianchi type VIII models the state space is unbounded and consequently, for all
non-inflationary perfect fluids, one of the curvature variables grows without
bound. Moreover, we show that for fluids stiffer than dust (), the
fluid will in general tend towards a state of extreme tilt. For dust
(), or for fluids less stiff than dust (), we show that
the fluid will in the future be asymptotically non-tilted. Furthermore, we show
that for all the universe evolves towards a vacuum state but

Pathways between childhood victimization and psychosis-like symptoms in the ALSPAC Birth Cohort
Background: Several large population-based studies have demonstrated associations between adverse childhood experiences and later development of psychotic symptoms. However, little attention has been paid to the mechanisms involved in this pathway and the few existing studies have relied on cross-sectional assessments. Methods: Prospective data on 6692 children from the UK Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used to address this issue. Mothers reported on children’s exposure to harsh parenting and domestic violence in early childhood, and children self-reported on bullying victimization prior to 8.5 years. Presence of children’s anxiety at 10 years and their depressive symptoms at 9 and 11 years were ascertained from mothers, and children completed assessments of self-esteem and locus of control at 8.5 years. Children were interviewed regarding psychotic symptoms at a mean age of 12.9 years. Multiple mediation analysis was performed to examine direct and indirect effects of each childhood adversity on psychotic symptoms. Results: The association between harsh parenting and psychotic symptoms was fully mediated by anxiety, depressive symptoms, external locus of control, and low self-esteem. Bullying victimization and exposure to domestic violence had their associations with psychotic symptoms partially mediated by anxiety, depression, locus of control, and self-esteem. Similar results were obtained following adjustment for a range of confounders and when analyses were conducted for boys and girls separately. Conclusions: These findings tentatively suggest that specific cognitive and affective difficulties in childhood could be targeted to minimize the likelihood of adolescents exposed to early trauma from developing psychotic symptoms
The Asymptotic Behaviour of Tilted Bianchi type VI Universes
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the Bianchi type VI universes with a
tilted -law perfect fluid. The late-time attractors are found for the
full 7-dimensional state space and for several interesting invariant subspaces.
In particular, it is found that for the particular value of the equation of
state parameter, , there exists a bifurcation line which signals a
transition of stability between a non-tilted equilibrium point to an extremely
tilted equilibrium point. The initial singular regime is also discussed and we

Homogeneous Plane-wave Spacetimes and their Stability
We consider the stability of spatially homogeneous plane-wave spacetimes. We
carry out a full analysis for plane-wave spacetimes in (4+1) dimensions, and
find there are two cases to consider; what we call non-exceptional and
exceptional. In the non-exceptional case the plane waves are stable to
(spatially homogeneous) vacuum perturbations as well as a restricted set of
matter perturbations. In the exceptional case we always find an instability.
Also we consider the Milne universe in arbitrary dimensions and find it is also
stable provided the strong energy condition is satisfied. This implies that
there exists an open set of stable plane-wave solutions in arbitrary
