Sticky physics of joy: On the dissolution of spherical candies

Assuming a constant mass-decrease per unit-surface and -time we provide a very simplistic model for the dissolution process of spherical candies. The aim is to investigate the quantitative behavior of the dissolution process throughout the act of eating the candy. In our model we do not take any microscopic mechanism of the dissolution process into account, but rather provide an estimate which is based on easy-to-follow calculations. Having obtained a description based on this calculation, we confirm the assumed behavior by providing experimental data of the dissolution process. Besides a deviation from our prediction caused by the production process of the candies below a diameter of 2 mm, we find good agreement with our model-based expectations. Serious questions on the optimal strategy of enjoying a candy will be addressed, like whether it is wise to split the candy by breaking it with the teeth or not

This study is to see the improvement of student's writing skill on descriptive text for seventh grade students of SMP 14 Kota Serang by using peer feedback technique. The subject of this research is the students of seventh grade of SMP 14 Kota Serang which consist of 30 students. This research is applied by a quasi-experimental design and quantitative research method. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test) which is conducted based on the main problems: 1) How is the students writing ability on descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP 14 Kota serang? 2) How is the effectiveness of peer feedback in teaching writing descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP 14 Kota serang?. The research finding of the last result showed that “to” from the calculation is higher than t table both at significance level 5% and 1%. Significance 5% t observation= 7.14 and t table= 1.67 or 7.14 >1.67 which its significance 1% t observation=7.14 and t table= 2.39 or 7.14 >2.39. In addition, the result of observations showed that the students more motivated in learning English, especially for writing subject. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that peer feedback can be used in teaching writing descriptive text. The result of this research shows that the students' writing on descriptive text who use peer feedback achieve better performance than those who do not use it. &nbsp

The Impact of Community Based Adventure Therapy on Stress and Coping Skills in Adults.

    Get PDF
Stress and coping skills are among the most essential components of the mental health counseling field. The use of coping skills (e.g., meditation, physical activities, appropriate uses of leisure) has been identified as an effective strategy for stress management. Adventure therapy has emerged as a modality that can positively augment other therapeutic approaches by improving coping skills and assisting clients in managing stress. As with all therapies, a positive working alliance has been found to be important toward achieving clinical outcomes. This study explored how adventure therapy enhanced learned coping strategies for stress and improved therapeutic alliance. Outcomes from this exploratory research highlighted the potential of adventure therapy to decrease stress, increase coping skills, and build therapeutic rapport with the therapist

Smoothing of sandpile surfaces after intermittent and continuous avalanches: three models in search of an experiment

We present and analyse in this paper three models of coupled continuum equations all united by a common theme: the intuitive notion that sandpile surfaces are left smoother by the propagation of avalanches across them. Two of these concern smoothing at the `bare' interface, appropriate to intermittent avalanche flow, while one of them models smoothing at the effective surface defined by a cloud of flowing grains across the `bare' interface, which is appropriate to the regime where avalanches flow continuously across the sandpile.Comment: 17 pages and 26 figures. The Spatial Distribution Of OH And CN Radicals In The Coma Of Comet Encke

    Get PDF
Multiple potential parent species have been proposed to explain CN abundances in comet comae, but the parent has not been definitively identified for all comets. This study examines the spatial distribution of CN radicals in the coma of comet Encke and determines the likelihood that CN is a photodissociative daughter of HCN in the coma. Comet Encke is the shortest orbital period (3.3 years) comet known and also has a low dust-to-gas ratio based on optical observations. Observations of CN were obtained from 2003 October 22 to 24, using the 2.7 m telescope at McDonald Observatory. To determine the parent of CN, the classical vectorial model was modified by using a cone shape in order to reproduce Encke's highly aspherical and asymmetric coma. To test the robustness of the modified model, the spatial distribution of OH was also modeled. This also allowed us to obtain CN/OH ratios in the coma. Overall, we find the CN/OH ratio to be 0.009 +/- 0.004. The results are consistent with HCN being the photodissociative parent of CN, but we cannot completely rule out other possible parents such as CH(3)CN and HC(3)N. We also found that the fan-like feature spans similar to 90 degrees, consistent with the results of Woodney et al..NASAOffice of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State UniversityMcDonald Observator
