What characteristics of smart home speakers should companies invest in? Differences between actual and potential users
The aim of the research is double. First, it aims to examine the importance of smart product features on users'' satisfaction and adopters'' purchasing intentions. Second, we want to analyse the possible quadratic effect of three features, autonomy, personality and human interaction on the two outcomes. The results show that the features of smart products that influence users'' satisfaction differ from those of adopters'' purchasing intentions. Finally, interesting managerial implications for smart product producers and dealers are offered
Electronic transport and vibrational modes in the smallest molecular bridge: H2 in Pt nanocontacts
We present a state-of-the-art first-principles analysis of electronic
transport in a Pt nanocontact in the presence of H2 which has been recently
reported by Smit et al. in Nature 419, 906 (2002). Our results indicate that at
the last stages of the breaking of the Pt nanocontact two basic forms of bridge
involving H can appear. Our claim is, in contrast to Smit et al.'s, that the
main conductance histogram peak at G approx 2e^2/h is not due to molecular H2,
but to a complex Pt2H2 where the H2 molecule dissociates. A first-principles
vibrational analysis that compares favorably with the experimental one also
supports our claim .Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Ballistic resistivity in aluminum nanocontacts
One of the major industrial challenges is to profit from some fascinating
physical features present at the nanoscale. The production of dissipationless
nanoswitches (or nanocontacts) is one of such attractive applications.
Nevertheless, the lack of knowledge of the real efficiency of electronic
ballistic/non dissipative transport limits future innovations. For multi-valent
metallic nanosystems -where several transport channels per atom are involved-
the only experimental technique available for statistical transport
characterization is the conductance histogram. Unfortunately its interpretation
is difficult because transport and mechanical properties are intrinsically
interlaced. We perform a representative series of semiclassical molecular
dynamics simulations of aluminum nanocontact breakages, coupled to full quantum
conductance calculations, and put in evidence a linear relationship between the
conductance and the contact minimum cross-section for the geometrically favored
aluminum nanocontact configurations. Valid in a broad range of conductance
values, such relation allows the definition of a transport parameter for
nanomaterials, that represents the novel concept of ballistic resistivity
Analysis of ecosystem services provision in the Colombian Amazon using participatory research and mapping techniques
Over the last two decades indigenous peoples in the lower Caquetá River basin in Colombia have experienced detrimental changes in the provision of important ecosystem services in ways that have significant implications for the maintenance of their traditional livelihoods. To assess these changes we conducted eight participatory mapping activities and convened 22 focus group discussions. We focused the analysis on two types of change: (1) changes in the location of ecosystem services provisioning areas and (2) changes in the stock of ecosystem services. The focal ecosystem services include services such as provision of food, raw materials and medicinal resources. Results from the study show that in the past two decades the demand for food and raw materials has intensified and, as a result, locations of provisioning areas and the stocks of ecosystem services have changed. We found anecdotal evidence that these changes correlate well with socio-economic factors such as greater need for income generation, change in livelihood practices and consumption patterns. We discuss the use of participatory mapping techniques in the context of marginalized and data-poor regions. We also show how this kind of information can strengthen existing ecosystem-based management strategies used by indigenous peoples in the Colombian Amazon
First-principles phase-coherent transport in metallic nanotubes with realistic contacts
We present first-principles calculations of phase coherent electron transport
in a carbon nanotube (CNT) with realistic contacts. We focus on the zero-bias
response of open metallic CNT's considering two archetypal contact geometries
(end and side) and three commonly used metals as electrodes (Al, Au, and Ti).
Our ab-initio electrical transport calculations make, for the first time,
quantitative predictions on the contact transparency and the transport
properties of finite metallic CNT's. Al and Au turn out to make poor contacts
while Ti is the best option of the three. Additional information on the CNT
band mixing at the contacts is also obtained.Comment: 5 pages (two-column format
Evaluación de técnicas de tinción para la observación de bandas de crecimiento en vértebras de elasmobranquios tropicales
The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of different vertebrae staining techniques for the visualization and counting of growth bands in tropical species of batoids (Narcine leoparda, Urotrygon aspidura, Hypanus longus, Potamotrygon magdalenae) and sharks (Alopias pelagicus, Carcharhinus falciformis, Sphyrna lewini, Sphyrna corona and Mustelus lunulatus). Different cutting thicknesses and staining protocols were tested, analysing the precision and bias of each combination to identify the most accurate technique for estimating age. Vertebral sections of 0.4 mm were more suitable for batoids, except for Narcine leoparda; for this species and for all the shark species assessed, sections of 0.5 mm are recommended. Different combinations of stain and exposure time were required to achieve the best visualizations of vertebral growth band pair for the shark and ray species. Intraspecific variation occurred among vertebrae size of batoids. Our results confirm the importance of defining a suitable species-specific protocol for sectioning and staining hard structures before carrying out an age and growth study to improve the reliability of the age estimates.
The human area postrema and other nuclei related to the emetic reflex express cAMP phosphodiesterases 4B and 4D
Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitors, i.e. rolipram, are being extensively investigated as therapeutic agents in several diseases. Emesis is one of the most common side effects of PDE4 inhibitors. Given the fact that the area postrema is considered the chemoreceptor trigger zone for vomiting, the present study investigates the regional distribution and cellular localization of the four gene transcripts of the PDE4 subfamily (PDE4A, PDE4B, PDE4C and PDE4D) in human brainstem. In situ hybridization histochemistry was used to locate the mRNA distribution of the four PDE4 subfamilies in the area postrema and related nuclei of human postmortem brainstem. We have found that in the brainstem PDE4B and PDE4D mRNA expression is abundant and distributed not only in neuronal cells, but also in glial cells, and on blood vessels. The hybridization signals for PDE4B and PDE4D mRNAs in the area postrema were stronger than those in any other nuclei in the brainstem. They were also found in vomiting-related nuclei such as the nucleus of the solitary tract and the dorsal vagal motor nucleus. These findings suggest that cAMP signaling modification in the area postrema could mediate the emetic effects of PDE4 inhibitors in human brainstem. This work was supported by grants from Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (SAF2006-10243). A Rapid and Accurate Extraction Procedure for Analysing Free Amino Acids in Meat Samples by GC-MS
This study evaluated the use of a mixer mill as the homogenization tool for the extraction of free amino acids in meat samples, with the main goal of analyzing a large number of samples in the shortest time and minimizing sample amount and solvent volume. Ground samples (0.2 g) were mixed with 1.5 mL HCl 0.1 M and homogenized in the mixer mill. The final biphasic system was separated by centrifugation. The supernatant was deproteinized, derivatized and analyzed by gas chromatography. This procedure showed a high extracting ability, especially in samples with high free amino acid content (recovery = 88.73–104.94%). It also showed a low limit of detection and quantification (3.8 · 10−4–6.6 · 10−4 μg μL−1 and 1.3 · 10−3–2.2 · 10−2 μg μL−1, resp.) for most amino acids, an adequate precision (2.15–20.15% for run-to-run), and a linear response for all amino acids (R2 = 0.741–0.998) in the range of 1–100 µg mL−1. Moreover, it takes less time and requires lower amount of sample and solvent than conventional techniques. Thus, this is a cost and time efficient tool for homogenizing in the extraction procedure of free amino acids from meat samples, being an adequate option for routine analysis
