    RELATIONSHIPS AMONG MEASURES OF TESTICULAR DEVELOPMENT AND ENDOCRINE FUNCTION IN BOARS

    Nine blood samples were taken at 30-min intervals from 36 Landrace x Large White boars at each of eight ages (42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112, 126 and 140 d). Serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T) and estradiol- 17β (E-2) were quantified by radioimmunoassay procedures. The maximum concentration of LH and the age at maximum concentration were predicted for each boar. Variability of LH samples was described for each boar by the pooled within age variance among LH samples and by the number of LH peaks. Measurements of testicular development taken at 140 d of age included: in situ testis width and length, excised testis weights and histological traits of excised testes (seminiferous tubule diameter, percentage of tubules with a lumen and percentage of tubules with active spermatogenesis). Pooled within line correlations were calculated with data from boars selected for either high or low testis weight. Correlations among the testicular traits ranged from .45 to .88. Luteinizing hormone concentration (mean over all ages) was related to measures of testicular development (r = .24 to .49). Concentrations of LH from 42 to 84 d of age were more highly correlated with testicular traits than were the concentrations from 98 to 140 d. Boars with larger, more mature testes tended to have higher maximum concentrations of LH (r = .19 to .42) and younger age at maximum concentration (r = -.12 to -.26). Testicular traits were correlated with the number of LH peaks (r = .31 to .43) but not with LH sample variance (r = -.14 to -.01). Concentration of FSH was not related (r = -.20 to .19) to measures of testicular development. Testicular traits were more highly correlated with E-2 concentration (r = .22 to .41) than with T concentration (r = .12 to .33).     The use of growth models to evaluate the changing response to digestible lysine in high-lean growth gilts

    Conventional response criteria for amino acid research include mean live weight gain and tissue accretion rates over a given weight interval. However, these methods fail to characterize the changing response of tissue accretion to dietary amino acids as body weight increases. For this reason, growth modeling was used to characterize the response to digestible lysine in two experiments (114 gilts each) from 80 to 160 lb and 160 to 300 lb, respectively. Corn-soybean meal diets were formulated to assure that lysine (.54 to 1.04% and .54 to .94% digestible lysine for Exp 1 and 2, respectively) was the first limiting amino acid. Analysis of variance was used to test linear and quadratic responses in cumulative weight gain on test as digestible lysine increased. A time by digestible lysine interaction was detected, indicating that a separate regression equation for each lysine level was necessary. In Exp. 1, ADG and carcass CP accretion were maximized for gilts fed 1.04, .94, and .84% digestible lysine from 80 to 100 lb, 100 to 120 lb, and 120 to 160 lb, respectively. Lipid accretion .74 to .84% digestible lysine. In Exp. 2, ADG was maximized by feeding .84% from 160 to 205 lb and .74% from 205 to 300 lb. Carcass CP accretion was maximized by feeding .94% digestible lysine, and lipid accretion was minimized for gilts fed .84% digestible lysine from 160 to 300 lb. If feeding graded levels of digestible lysine resulted in parallel lines for carcass protein accretion, mean values would result in accurate data evaluation. However, responses to digestible lysine changed over the feeding period.     Effect of Floor Cooling on Behavior and Heart Rate of Late Lactation Sows Under Acute Heat Stress

    Much U.S. swine production is in Köppen climate types classified as “hot-summer humid continental” and “humid subtropical.” As a result, farrowing sows are often exposed to temperatures above their upper critical temperature. This heat stress (HS) can affect sow welfare and productivity and have a negative economic impact. The study objective was to evaluate the impact of a cooling pad on sows' behavioral and heart rate responses to acute HS. Treatments were randomly allotted to ten multiparous sows to receive a constant cool water flow of 0.00 (CONTROL, n = 4), 0.25 (LOW, n = 2), 0.55 (MEDIUM, n = 2), or 0.85 (HIGH, n = 2) L/min for 100 min and replicated eight times, switching treatments so that each sow was exposed to each treatment. The cooling was initiated 1 h after the room reached 35°C for 100 min. Eating, drinking and nursing behaviors, postures, and heart rate were recorded before heating (Period 1), prior to cooling (Period 2), and during cooling (Period 3). There were no differences between LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH flow rates for any periods on all behavioral and heart rate traits, so data were pooled (COOLED). There were no differences in any of the measures during Periods 1 and 2, except for the ratio of short term to long term heart rate variability (SD1:SD2) with higher values for CONTROL than COOLED sows in Period 2. During Period 3, CONTROL sows changed postures more frequently (11.5 ±1.6 vs. 5.1 ±1.6 changes per hour), spent more time drinker-pressing/drinking (4.4 ± 0.5 vs. 1.4 ± 0.4% of time), standing (6.6 ± 1.7 vs. 3.8 ± 1.6% of time), sitting (10.0 ± 1.2 vs. 4.0 ± 1.1), less time lying (83.0 ±1.8 vs. 92.0 ±1.7% of time), especially lying laterally (62.0 ± 5.6 vs. 75.0 ± 5.3% of time), than sows in all three cooling treatments (all P < 0.001). Heart rate during Period 3 was lower for COOLED sows compared to the CONTROL sows (100.2 ± 3.4 vs. 119.0 ± 4.0 beat per min, P < 0.001). Sows response to increased thermal load can be effectively reduced using water-cooled cooling pads, thereby improving sow comfort and welfare. The beneficial effects on behavior are noticeable from the lowest flow rate

    Evaluation of alternative techniques to determine pork carcass value

    Three techniques for estimating the value of pork carcasses were evaluated: an optical probe, a real-time ultrasound scanner, and an electromagnetic scanner (EMSCAN). The ability of these techniques to predict carcass value was compared to the predictive ability of actual measures of backfat depth and longissimus muscle area taken with a ruler and a dot grid. Results indicated the EMSCAN model was the best predictor of carcass value. However, the optical probe, ultrasound, and the ruler/dot grid all provided information not contained in the EMSCAN model. The choice among ultrasound, the optical probe, and the ruler/dot grid depends on how the carcass will be used. There is no significant difference between ultrasound and the ruler/dot grid or the optical probe and the ruler/dot grid if the carcass is to be marketed in wholesale primal form, but the ruler/dot grid is superior if the ham and loin are to be sold as lean, boneless products. A model combining the EMSCAN and optical probe readings provided more accurate value predictions than either technique alone. A carcass value matrix for use in pricing pork carcasses was developed using readings from the optical probe.     Illuminating the past 8 billion years of cold gas towards two gravitationally lensed quasars

    Using the Boolardy Engineering Test Array of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP BETA), we have carried out the first z = 0-1 survey for HI and OH absorption towards the gravitationally lensed quasars PKS B1830-211 and MGJ0414+0534. Although we detected all previously reported intervening systems towards PKS B1830-211, in the case of MG J0414+0534, three systems were not found, indicating that the original identifications may have been confused with radio frequency interference. Given the sensitivity of our data, we find that our detection yield is consistent with the expected frequency of intervening HI systems estimated from previous surveys for 21-cm emission in nearby galaxies and z ~ 3 damped Lyman a absorbers. We find spectral variability in the z = 0.886 face-on spiral galaxy towards PKS B1830-211 from observations undertaken with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in 1997/1998 and ASKAP BETA in 2014/2015. The HI equivalent width varies by a few per cent over approximately yearly time-scales. This long-term spectral variability is correlated between the north-east and south-west images of the core, and with the total flux density of the source, implying that it is observationally coupled to intrinsic changes in the quasar. The absence of any detectable variability in the ratio of HI associated with the two core images is in stark contrast to the behaviour previously seen in the molecular lines. We therefore infer that coherent opaque HI structures in this galaxy are larger than the parsec-scale molecular clouds found at mm-wavelengths
