Method for alleviating thermal stress damage in laminates
A method is provided for alleviating the stress damage in metallic matrix composites, such as laminated sheet or foil composites. Discontinuities are positively introduced into the interface between the layers so as to reduce the thermal stress produced by unequal expansion of the materials making up the composite. Although a number of discrete elements could be used to form one of the layers and thus carry out this purpose, the discontinuities are preferably produced by simply drilling holes in the metallic matrix layer or by forming grooves in a grid pattern in this layer
Inference of the ring current ion composition by means of charge exchange decay
The analysis of the measured ion fluxes during the several day storm recovery period and the assumption that beside hydrogen other ions were present and that the decays were exponential in nature, it was possible to establish three separate lifetimes for the ions. These fitted decay lifetimes are in excellent agreement with the expected charge exchange decay lifetimes for H(+), O(+), and He(+) in the energy and L-value range of the data. This inference technique, thus, establishes the presence of measurable and appreciable quantities of oxygen and helium ions as well as protons in the storm-time ring current. Indications that He(+) may also be present under these same conditions were found
Motions of charged particles in the Magnetosphere under the influence of a time-varying large scale convection electric field
The motions of charged particles under the influence of the geomagnetic and electric fields were quite complex in the region of the inner magnetosphere. The Volland-Stern type large scale convection electric field was used successfully to predict both the plasmapause location and particle enhancements determined from Explorer 45 measurements. A time dependence in this electric field was introduced based on the variation in Kp for actual magnetic storm conditions. The particle trajectories were computed as they change in this time-varying electric field. Several storm fronts of particles of different magnetic moments were allowed to be injected into the inner magnetosphere from L = 10 in the equatorial plane. The motions of these fronts are presented in a movie format
Vast planes of satellites in a high resolution simulation of the Local Group: comparison to Andromeda
We search for vast planes of satellites (VPoS) in a high resolution
simulation of the Local Group performed by the CLUES project, which improves
significantly the resolution of former similar studies. We use a simple method
for detecting planar configurations of satellites, and validate it on the known
plane of M31. We implement a range of prescriptions for modelling the satellite
populations, roughly reproducing the variety of recipes used in the literature,
and investigate the occurence and properties of planar structures in these
populations. The structure of the simulated satellite systems is strongly
non-random and contains planes of satellites, predominantly co-rotating, with,
in some cases, sizes comparable to the plane observed in M31 by Ibata et al..
However the latter is slightly richer in satellites, slightly thinner and has
stronger co-rotation, which makes it stand out as overall more exceptional than
the simulated planes, when compared to a random population. Although the
simulated planes we find are generally dominated by one real structure, forming
its backbone, they are also partly fortuitous and are thus not kinematically
coherent structures as a whole. Provided that the simulated and observed planes
of satellites are indeed of the same nature, our results suggest that the VPoS
of M31 is not a coherent disc and that one third to one half of its satellites
must have large proper motions perpendicular to the plane

Sensory sensitivity as a link between concussive traumatic brain injury and PTSD.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common injuries to military personnel, a population often exposed to stressful stimuli and emotional trauma. Changes in sensory processing after TBI might contribute to TBI-post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comorbidity. Combining an animal model of TBI with an animal model of emotional trauma, we reveal an interaction between auditory sensitivity after TBI and fear conditioning where 75 dB white noise alone evokes a phonophobia-like phenotype and when paired with footshocks, fear is robustly enhanced. TBI reduced neuronal activity in the hippocampus but increased activity in the ipsilateral lateral amygdala (LA) when exposed to white noise. The white noise effect in LA was driven by increased activity in neurons projecting from ipsilateral auditory thalamus (medial geniculate nucleus). These data suggest that altered sensory processing within subcortical sensory-emotional circuitry after TBI results in neutral stimuli adopting aversive properties with a corresponding impact on facilitating trauma memories and may contribute to TBI-PTSD comorbidity
